GameMaker Studio 2, the leading 2D game development engine, has signed a deal with Nintendo, meaning GameMaker games can be exported directly to Nintendo Switch.

GameMaker is expanding its already significant reach to developers looking to release on the hugely successful console that can be played anytime, anywhere, with anyone.

First launched by YoYo Games in March 2017, GameMaker Studio 2 has seen continual growth since its release, and it is ready to take another step forward by forging a partnership with Nintendo. This will culminate with the launch of the GameMaker Studio 2 Nintendo Switch edition in summer, 2018.

Following the announcement of Undertale’s imminent arrival on Nintendo Switch, Toby Fox, creator of Undertale said, “I’m excited to use GameMaker Studio 2 to put Undertale on Nintendo Switch. I’m a big fan of Nintendo. I hope Mario plays my game.”

More information about the release date and the supported games will be announced closer to the official launch in summer, 2018.

If there was ever a golden age of video gaming, it would be now.

YOYO Games, based in Scotland recently made it easier for would be developers to put together a simplistic platformer or puzzle video game by way of their GameMaker Studio 2 for Windows PC (also iMac).

Releasing as a Creator Edition means it’s super simple to put together a high quality and addictively playable, original game, built by you.

Initially the options and in-app Menu’s can be overwhelming if you’re new to game development.

If you’re like me, you’re likely to fiddle around a bit to get your head around the functions and turning your sprite in to a character, either a uniquely created one by you or via one of the available templates.

Using a drag and drop system you will begin to place together your environment, control the in-game camera, build, test and build some more.

The options and functionality in GameMaker Studio 2 Creator Edition are almost endless, and the program also caters for those more experienced in video game development.

Being a massively sized app there are alot of in-app free video tutorials available.

Starting out as a novice, with no knowledge, in only a few hours you’re likely to have the core of your game and it’s aesthetics and functionality up and running.

The Creator Edition enables you to publish your game over to Steam for PC or iMac – but, sadly, for PlayStation 4, Xbox and Mobile, these are paid add ons.

Further to that if you do build a game that you feel is worthy of selling, or giving away publicly, you do need to sign up to the respective publishing platform’s Developer Program.

While GameMaker Studio 2 is super intuitive and equally user friendly – having the paid add-ons in the Creator Edition license for mobile and console development was a little disappointing – and for the type of game you are likely to develop, seemed a little counter intuitive to not be able to publish to Mobile.

Still, if you have ever wanted to have a go at creating your own video game, even if it is to get your feet wet, or to build a shooter title to rival a Triple A Studio’s mega million dollar title, GameMaker Studio 2 Creator Edition is where you should begin.
