Ubisoft has just announced to us at StG that the second Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands expansion, Fallen Ghosts, will be available to season pass owners simultaneously on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC on May 30th, 2017. The expansion will release for individual purchase for all players a week later, on June 6th, 2017.

Fallen Ghosts takes place after the fall of the Santa Blanca Cartel. With Unidad’s military force unable to maintain control over Bolivia, the country is in a state of civil war. To help restore order, the Unidad enlists cartel members, veterans, mercenaries and criminals from various nearby countries as volunteers. Together, they form a new brutal special unit: Los Extranjeros, which is ordered to track and eliminate all American agents.

In this chaotic situation, the Ghosts have one last mission: evacuate the last CIA members and American civilians remaining in the country. Shot down enroute to their mission, the Ghosts find themselves in the middle of the jungle, without external support, facing deadly enemies equipped with the latest gear and technology. These dangerous elite soldiers are separated into four distinct classes:

– Armored: Equipped with heavy bulletproof plates, they are especially threatening in close combat.

– Elite Sniper: Geared up with an advanced movement detector, these Elite Sniper are able to notice far away targets and never miss their shot.

– Jammer: With a jamming antenna directly in their backpack, they are able to neutralize drones and interfere with all electronic equipment.

– Covert Ops: Equipped with a new prototype cloaking device that makes them almost invisible and a powerful crossbow, they give a new meaning to the word “Ghost.”

The Fallen Ghosts campaign will feature 15 new missions in which players will have to take down four new bosses located in three different regions. In the expansion, players will start with a new character at level 30 and equipped with all of the main game skills. The level cap will increase from 30 to 35, and players will be able to unlock nine new skills including physical, weapon and drones skills.

Fallen Ghosts also features six exclusive new weapons ranging from new assaults rifles, sniper rifles and a crossbow that can be equipped with explosive arrows.

Finally, the more hardcore players will be pleased to know that the advanced and expert difficulties have been tweaked to offer an even higher challenge. By turning the HUD off players will get the most extreme and tactical experience possible in Ghost Recon Wildlands.

In Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, players discover a fictionalized future Bolivia, a few years from now, in which players must take down the Santa Blanca drug cartel by any means necessary. Behind enemy lines, they hunt down targets and discover intel, using any of the more than 60 vehicles available, including cars, motorcycles and even helicopters that they can commandeer.

To topple the cartel, players have to fight their way to El Sueño, Santa Blanca’s ruthless leader, by breaking down the Santa Blanca drug cartel’s operation piece by piece as they sever alliances between the drug lords and the corrupted government. A PvP mode for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands will be available in the coming months.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands (PC) Review

The Ghost’s are back! Returning to the present day after the so-so Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Ghost Recon: Wildlands drops players into a huge and diverse digital representation of Bolivia.

Back in 2001 Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon was a bit of a game changer. Taking a page out of Red Storm Entertainment’s Tom Clancy-inspired Rainbow Six games, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon introduced one-shot kills to players like myself who were more used to the run-and-gun mechanics of the likes of Quake, Doom and Unreal. Tactical planning and stealth were essential to succeed. Rambo-style heroics would be rewarded by a quick death.

Around the same time, rookie Czech outfit, Bohemia Interactive, released Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, giving players a huge open world, an arsenal of Cold War-era weapons and vehicles, as well as some pretty unforgiving gameplay.

The MilSim video game was born.

Anyone who has played Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and its spiritual successors, the ARMA games, know that whilst the depth of the simulation is impressive, they are, at times lacking a bit of polish.Even Codemasters’ take on their in-house developed extensions of the Operation Flashpoint franchise, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and Red River were still a bit rough around the edges.

Bohemia ‘s ARMA 3 is possibly the principle of modern military simulation development, but unfortunately, the extreme depth of simulation, the attention to detail and the rigid realism make the game rather inaccessible to a mainstream audience. Most gamers will be more familiar with the ARMA 2 zombie survival mod, DayZ, than the ARMA games, themselves.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands, rather than being the polished ARMA 3 beater that I thought it would be is, instead, a MilSim for the masses. Ubisoft’s latest Tom Clancy game is polished, looks great and features a diverse open world. But is that enough to make the game at once accessible to the average gamer and satisfying for the die-hard military simmer?

Wildlands is set in July 2019, returning to Ghost Recon’s usual near-future setting. Following the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia and the kidnap, torture and murder of an DEA. operative, the United States executes Operation Kingslayer. Supported by their CIA liaison, Karen Bowman, a four-man Ghost team is dispatched to Bolivia; their mission: to dismantle the Mexican drug cartel, Santa Blanca’s Bolivian Operation and kill its leader, El Sueno.

The fictional Bolivia of Wildlands ratchets up the real-world cocaine producing capital of the world, turning the South American country into a full-blown narco-state, whereby the drug cartel operates under the approval, and protection of the government.

A division of the Bolivian army, Unidad, will shot you on sight. Better equipped and armoured that the cartel narcos, Unidad soldiers can make a bad situation worse, dispatching reinforcements and helicopters.

But you are not exactly alone out there. As is the CIA’s usual M.O., the Ghosts, operating covertly on Bolivian soil enlist the help of the local rebels, the Kataris 26, in their fight against Santa Balanca.

The main campaign structure consists of a series of story missions designed to bring down local cartel leaders, slowly working your way up to El Sueno, himself. To unlock the story missions, you will need to retrieve intel, usually from a heavily defended enemy encampment.

The Wildlands campaign can be played solo or in four-player co-op. Taking on the roles of team leader, Nomad, gunner, Midas, sniper, Weaver or engineer, Holt. In solo, players take control of Nomad, with the rest of the team controlled by the game AI.

It’s pretty clear that the game is intended as a multiplayer experience. Your team AI isn’t the brightest, often getting left behind during a necessary quick vehicular exit- only to appear by magic next to you as you drive/fly away. Similarly weird is the way your team pop up at your destination if you ride away from them on a motorbike. It’s a minor grumble, but it betrays the quality of the team AI and totally destroys the suspension of disbelief.

Your AI team is, however, useful for locating the enemy, often calling out their positions long before you would have spotted them. The AI-assisted synchronised takedowns are also pretty good fun. You can highlight enemies and instruct your team to all fire at their targets at the same time, or along with your shot. Great for thinning the opposition quickly and without being spotted.

Stealth is really the name of the game with Wildlands. Not only is it hugely satisfying to complete your mission without raising the alarm, it’s also a lot safer. Whilst not as punishing as previous Ghost Recon games, all hell can easily break loose if someone raises the alarm. This is where he recon of the title comes in.

To minimise the chance of failure, you need to identify as many threats as you can prior to approaching your target. To do this you have a pair of binoculars and an RC drone. If you spot an enemy they get tagged, making it easier to avoid/take them out. Upgrades increase the zoom of your binoculars and extend the battery time and range of your drone.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Wildlands. If you’ve a spare moment, it’s easy to pop on for a few minutes to take out a base and tag some supplies. It’s not a game that demands hours of your time, but some of the trickier installation will need some patience and are best left for a when you have more time.

The game is packed (as you’d expect from Ubisoft) with collectables. Intel unlocks the location of items useful in your mission. Tagging supplies for the rebels and finding skill points provide you with the resources you need to upgrade your skills and equipment. Similarly, side missions, like stealing a plane or switching on a transmission, increase your standing with the rebels and in turn unlock rebel support options. There’s also weapons cases dotted about allowing you to upgrade your rifles and sidearm with new components.

The gameplay is slick, retaining the traditional Ghost Recon over the solder view. This third-person view give you a little more eye-on what’s going on around you. Whilst you can shoot from the hip, focusing your aim down the iron sights or scope will get you the best result.

The open-world sandbox-style gameplay may be a bit overwhelming to players used to more intimate, scripted gameplay. Don’t expect a Call of Duty-style Hollywood action movie storyline. Wildlands invites players to tell their own stories within the vast land that the developers have gifted us.

Ubisoft are no stranger to open world games, having most recently fit the whole of Paris and London into their Assassin’s Creed games as well as Chicago and San Francisco into their Watch_Dogs franchise. We mustn’t forget fellow Tom Clancy stablemate The Division and its post- apocalyptic New York. The Far Cry games and the recent Steep shows that they are also more than capable of digitally realising epic natural landscapes, as well.

The game world of Ghost Recon: Wildlands is huge. It’s a beautiful, living, breathing interpretation of the South American country of Bolivia. It’s the perfect setting for an open-world sandbox, featuring lush jungles, rugged mountains and snowy peaks.There’s even a vast salt lake.Dotted about this incredibly detailed landscape are a hundred or so enemy installations begging to be infiltrated by your Ghost team.

Getting about in the game is easy. You can fast travel between settlement or take one of a number of different vehicles. Wildlands has loads of transport option from motorbikes to armoured cars. There’s also helicopters, aeroplanes, trucks, SUVs and passenger cars available to get you from A to B.

It’s worth mentioning the dynamic weather and day/night cycle, as both effect the way you tackle missions. Unlocking night and heat vision makes night time stealth missions very favourable if you just want to get in and out again.

On a PC, Wildlands looks incredible. The attention to detail is breathtaking, like the way the rain splashes up forming a mist that rolls across the ground and the geese, disturbed by my helicopter, taking flight as a flock from the surface of a lake. The game’s varied lighting offers some spectacular sunset views, god-rays breaking through the clouds.

The PC version supports NVIDIA’s Ansel technology, allowing players to capture some stunning images from the game. Wildlands also supports triple-screens, but be mindful that you will need some stunning PC kit to take full advantage of the graphical options. My Asus-based review rig armed with an i7-6700K and a GTX 1080 was able to just about maintain a steady 55fps running at 1080p with 1.2x scale and all the option maxed.

As Ubisoft have previously done with their Assassin’s Creed games, there’s also a mobile app available for Apple and Android users called Ghost Recon HQ. The app features links to news and background information, as well as a satellite view map linked to the main game. The included Guerrilla Game allows you to send rebels on missions which unlock resources in your Wildlands game.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is an absolute blast to play. MilSim fans looking for a deadpan ARMA 3-style experience are going to be a bit disappointed. Only by cranking the difficulty to Extreme are you going to get anywhere near the punishing gameplay that you are expecting. Even then, you can’t help but feel there’s more scripting to the AI behaviour and ballistics than actual simulation.

Players wanting an engaging tactical shooter, offering immense replay value, and one that they can play with their friends need look no further. I can see the emergent gameplay that Wildlands offers allowing players to create some pretty spectacular tales of their own.

A week from today, Ubisoft will premiere a ground-breaking documentary, which is set to offer one of the most revealing insights to date into the drug trade in South America, and the battle to contain it. Scheduled to release on March the 6th, 2017, on major digital platforms; iTunes and Google Play, the feature length film, titled “Wildlands”, will showcase the real stories behind Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands’ fictional Bolivian setting.

The documentary provides a fascinating insight and wider context to the inspirational themes in the videogame, further highlighting the incredible lengths that the Paris based development team has gone to in order to create a truly believable setting.

This feature length documentary explores the real-life stories of key figures, who have been at the centre of the war on drugs from the past thirty years. Viewers will accompany narrator Rusty Young, author of New York Times best-seller, Marching Powder, as he meets the people, who have been involved in shaping the cocaine trade in South America, many of whom are telling their stories for the first time.

Travelling from Bolivia, and up through to the United States, he will listen to the fascinating stories of characters from both sides of the law, from the coca farmers, through the drug supply chain, to the Special Forces soldiers fighting the war on drugs – to get a raw snapshot of drug trafficking and production in South America.

Developed in partnership with Chief Productions, Wildlands captures the stories of some of the most influential voices on the matter. For the very first time, these diverse characters are brought together to give a broad perspective on a global crisis. Bolivia, Colombia and North America form the landscape for this complex story of the battle between law enforcement and criminal organisations seeking to monopolise a multi-billion-dollar illegal industry.

Director, Colin Offland, described the process involved in gathering the compelling and visceral source material; “We spoke to the people who know the drug trade better than anyone else; iconic characters, from either side of the law, who have defined this continent’s notorious image. Wildlands introduces the compelling, unbelievable, and often devastating, life stories of a number of individuals, including – George Jung: The man known for hooking North America on cocaine, George Jung was a major player in the cocaine trade during the 70’s and 80’s and was immortalised by Johnny Depp in the movie ‘Blow’. Adam Newbold: A former Navy SEAL with over 20 years’ combat experience, Adam has worked throughout South America. Thomas McFadden: Reformed drug trafficker, and subject of “Marching Powder”, reveals the tricks of his trade, which saw him become a prolific smuggler, until the day he was arrested with 5kg of cocaine at La Paz airport – leading to a lengthy stay at the notorious San Pedro Prison.

Alongside these individuals, Wildlands introduces traffickers, smugglers, money launderers, informants and law enforcers that shape the complex jigsaw forming the criminal underworld profiteering from this thriving industry and those seeking to defeat it.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Closed BETA (PC) Preview

Ghost Recon: Wildlands seems like a fine game, if I could play it. It’s about the most Ubisoft game that I could think of, a co-op version of Far Cry, mixed with The Division and taking some cues from Rainbow Six Siege. We recently had the chance to check out the Wildlands BETA, and came away impressed with what Ubisoft have managed to put together, but somewhat weary of seeing the same gameplay mechanics we’ve seen for years now recycled yet again.

Set in Bolivia, which, in this story is a failed narco-state caught between the oppressive government Unidad forces and the narcoterrists of the Santa Blanca cartel. You are part of a small United States covert operations team sent to clean up the mess. It’s all very much Ooh Rah Americans saving the world sort of stuff. Technically you’re working your way up, taking out ever-higher ranking members of the cartel, but really the story is there to give you an excuse to stalk bases and kill some bad guys. Wildlands is a game that is unabashedly happy with murder, and all pretense of civility is tossed out the window in the name of fun shooty gameplay. And in fact realistic world-building in general is tossed out the window. That may be distressing to some, but what Ubisoft have created is not a world that is an attempt to mimic our own, but a sandbox designed just so for us to explore and have a good time with our buddies.

Despite this being only a portion of the world map, the map is huge. Wildlands gives you the walk, drive, boat and fly around a beautiful open world. You’re essentially transporting yourself and your three ops team members between a huge variety of outposts and villages chock full of enemies, and occasionally civilians and rebel AI buddies too. How you take on the outpost is up to you, though the game generally pushes you into a stealthier approach, unlike say Just Cause 3. You can use drones, binoculars and the environment to get a sense of the base and its defences before picking your way through it, or you can just land a helicopter right in the middle and take things as they come.

If playing alone your AI buddies aren’t the smartest – I found they lagged behind me significantly, and were often on another side of the village or base than I was. And of course unlike a real human, they don’t take the initiative, so they’re more alternate fire targets than any real help.

This is a game designed around co-op gameplay. Playing alone is fine, but the real stories and emergent gameplay experiences will be when teaming up with some buddies and developing intricate base infiltration tactics. And then having fun while it all falls apart. The game does give you the option of public matchmaking, but I can’t really recommend that. The specific type of communication is akin to what’s needed in Rainbow Six Siege or a raid from Destiny, unlike say a strike from the same. Strangers just can’t or won’t communicate at the level needed for it not to be frustrating. Especially in an open world public matchmaking isn’t the best way to play the game.

Apart from base storming there’s the usual Ubisoft multiplicity of collectables. Bits of intelligence, skill points, optional challenges and the like cover the map in a way that only Ubisoft can. The amount of stuff to do is already overwhelming, and you certainly won’t be short of diversions to spend some time with. Whether they will grab your attention is something that has yet to be proven.

But the main game of storming bases and shooting baddies is fairly satisfying. While normal traversal is over the shoulder third person, you have the option of switching between first person or third person shooting. Despite being somewhat skeptical of switching between first-person and third person, it works rather well. Both you and your cartel enemies go down fairly easily – no inexplicable bullet sponges (looking at you The Division) here. As a result, knowing the base you’re going up against before going in makes things much easier. Suppressors are on by default and if you play well they’ll never need to come off. But that’s rare. Most infiltrations end in some sort of firefight, where your drone missed tagging an enemy or a companion rebel AI does something stupid and ruins your plan.

It all ends up feeling a bit stealth-optional just as it is in Far Cry, which is fine by me but might annoy those looking for a different experience. Firefights weren’t too difficult even with the default loadout, but I feel that’s a part of the closed beta, and the full game will ramp up enemy difficulty as it develops.

There’s a wide variety of loadouts and customisability in nearly everything, from the colour of your skin to the colour of your gun. That said at the moment the character creator is relatively limited – there are no sliders for example, only set options. The clothing is somewhat limited too, but I can chalk this up to being a closed beta, rather than the full game. There were some #brands that were an unwelcome sight, but I think that’s just a personal preference of mine; others may love them.

I had issues connecting and playing with others with random but consistent disconnects and failed instance merging. There were extreme frame rate issues on my PC, leading me to lock to 30FPS, even with a powerful GPU hardware.

Overall the Wildlands BETA got me much more interested in a game that honestly I had written off. It offers a beautiful world and great gameplay. Bugs will be ironed out and the game will be (hopefully) optimised as development progresses.

But playing co-op is a must, and that can be a challenge. I’m sure there’s more to the game from what I saw but for people would play alone even half the time the way the game is structured isn’t really set up for them. Although it has all the trappings of a Ubisoft game, all of them, its appeal is actually quite niche. It’s too early to tell whether it will be successful or not, but it definitely already has the ingredients there. Whether you will have fun may depend on what you like to eat what you are being served.

Ubi & Amazon Join to Create Wildlands: War Within the Cartel Live Action Featurette

Ubisoft has announced to us at Shane the Gamer (StG) a collaboration with Amazon and Twitch to create a 30-minute, original, live-action promotional video set in the world of the upcoming open world action-adventure game, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. Scheduled to premiere on February 16th, 2017, War Within The Cartel will spotlight the Santa Blanca cartel, a ruthless group that has turned Bolivia into a narco-state. War Within The Cartel will be streamed on Ubisoft’s Twitch channel (www.twitch.tv/Ubisoft) and will be immediately available on demand via Amazon Prime Video following the premiere.

War Within the Cartel takes viewers inside the inner workings of the Santa Blanca drug cartel, controlled by the revered yet ruthless leader, El Sueño. In the aftermath of an attack on their compound, the organization’s senior leadership composed of El Muro (Head of Security), El Yayo (Head of Production), Nidia Flores (Head of Operations) and Head of Influence (El Cardenal) seeks out a traitor within their midst to exact deadly retribution.

The action packed story culminates in the events leading up to the beginning of the game as an elite Special Forces unit, the Ghosts, is called in to dismantle the cartel. War Within The Cartel is produced by Los Angeles-based digital studio, Legion of Creatives, and features Grammy winner, entrepreneur, actor and hip hop legend, Tip “T.I.” Harris playing the role of Marcus, one of the members of the Santa Blanca cartel.

Ubisoft Celebrates 30 Years of Creating Games at E3 2016

Ubisoft has revealed its plans for E3 2016, where its creative teams will proudly present highly anticipated titles such as Watch Dogs 2, For Honor™ and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon^® Wildlands. They’ll also detail new content coming for live games and – as usual – unveil some surprises.

The week will kick off with Ubisoft’s E3 2016 Conference, taking place on Monday, June 13 starting at 1 p.m. PDT and preceded by a 30-minute pre-show. E3 attendees can experience Ubisoft games at its booth (booth #1023, South Hall, Los Angeles Convention Center) from June 14 – 16. More than 1,700 fans also have the opportunity to play Ubisoft games and meet the development teams at the fourth-annual Ubisoft Lounge.

“E3 is always a very special moment when everyone in the entertainment business does their best to amaze and engage gamers. For Ubisoft’s teams, it’s a period of pride and of anxious anticipation because they are finally showing off the games they’ve poured so much passion into, and receiving feedback from players and peers. For Honor: Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, For Honor drops gamers into the chaos of a raging battlefield during an ongoing war between three Great Factions: the bold Knights, the brutal Vikings and the enigmatic Samurai. South Park The Fractured But Whole: Delve into the crime-ridden underbelly of South Park as the newest member of Coon & Friends. As the New Kid, players must harness their super powers to fight crime and become part of the most beloved superhero franchise of all time.
Eagle Flight: Developed exclusively for virtual reality, players will soar over the skies of Paris as an eagle and experience the freedom of flight. Players take on enemies in fast-paced multiplayer battles for up to 3v3 or level-up flying skills in single player to navigate their eagle gracefully through the city’s most iconic landmarks.

For the fourth year in a row, Ubisoft is welcoming some of its biggest fans to E3 by inviting them to the Ubisoft Lounge.

More than 1,700 fans will visit this pop-up event being held nearby the Los Angeles Convention Center. At the Ubisoft Lounge, fans will have hands-on time with games from Ubisoft’s E3 lineup, as well as time to discuss their favorite titles with Ubisoft’s teams, attend master classes, compete against other fans and win prizes. Fifty fan ambassadors, the “Star Players” from around the world, also will join Ubisoft for full access to this year’s E3. These Star Players are chosen from among the most dedicated of Ubisoft’s fans. The Ubisoft Lounge will open its doors Tuesday, June 14th, 2016 at 2 p.m. PDT and close Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 at 6 p.m. PDT. On Tuesday, starting at 8:30 p.m. PDT, a Special Ops Night will gather development teams from Tom Clancy’s The Division, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands for a 90 minute livestream with on-site fans.

Also at E3 2015 Ubisoft announced the development of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, a new entry in the acclaimed Ghost Recon series and the franchise’s first open world title. Ghost Recon Wildlands is scheduled to be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

Development on Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is being led by Ubisoft Paris in collaboration with five other Ubisoft studios.

Set a few years from now, Ghost Recon Wildlands lets players lead a team of Ghosts, a four-player U.S. Elite Special Operations unit, on a covert mission to eliminate the Santa Blanca drug cartel, an underworld power and growing global threat within Ubisoft’s imagining of an incredibly beautiful, yet dangerous Bolivia.

Ghost Recon Wildlands takes place in the largest and most diverse action-adventure open world Ubisoft has created to date. With hundreds of villages and well-known landmarks, local legends and various factions and regions, players venture into a vast world with which to interact and explore. The Ghosts’ upgradable skills, along with a vast arsenal of weapons, vehicles and drones, will help them take down their almighty enemy.

Players can engage in the entire game solo or team up with up to three friends in co-op to roam freely in this gigantic playground. Players will have complete flexibility in how they tackle the game’s story, missions and objectives, as well as their approach, whether it’s stealth, distraction, tactical or frontal assault, or a combination of styles.

As a member of the Ghosts, players face countless difficult decisions, and those choices have tangible – and often unexpected – consequences for enemies and allies alike creating dynamic and emergent gameplay throughout.
