There are so many iconic gems in the 90’s that are just not watched or appreciated enough.

Jacob’s Ladder is one of the really truly messed up war movies that is dripping with interesting themes that I fell like not enough people talk about. Well now with a new Bluray release I was able to revisit and re-appreciate how great it is.

Jacob’s Ladder follows the titular Jacob who was in the Vietnam war. It seems like something went wrong in Vietnam, and he got himself a knife wound in battle. The movie jumps around with a bunch of scenes before he went to war, while he was there, and after he came back. This is the biggest thing working against the movie, it can be really hard to follow at times not knowing when a scene is based.

The next hard part is it seems that Jacob is dealing with a whole lot of madness.

The people he seems to be in a relationship with changes, sometimes it appears to be dreams, sometimes it appears to be actual scenes jumping before and after the war. It isn’t an easy movie to follow at times, but it is really worth sitting back and just taking in what the movie presents. Trying to follow it too closely can be vague and all over the place, but as a whole as the movie starts to create a more clear narrative as Jacob figures out what is going on.

Then there is the ending. As the movie comes to its climax it lands with a fantastic solid twist ending. The challenge with these kinds of endings is that once you know it, well you know it. In this movie it definitely works in its favour for a rewatch, as other scenes start to make more sense, and the way the movie is structured makes heaps more sense. This is also helped by some fantastic acting from Tim Robbins to really help the movie stick the landing in some crazy scenes.

This Bluray includes a heap of features, old and new. From some interviews from the 90’s to some great new features looking into the themes of the movies. These are really interesting an insightful, but the two cut scenes are probably my favourite bit. It’s not an added 20 second conversation they cut, but one is a cracking really interesting scene that is absolutely bombastic. I genuinely have no idea if it would have made the movie better or worse, so as a bonus feature it is perfect.

Jacob’s Ladder may not be the best war movie, or the best psychological horror movie, but it is an excellent blend of the two. It may not be the easiest to follow at times, but it really benefits from multiple rewatches, which is perfect for a Blu-ray release.

Did you know about Harry Haft?

A survivor of Auschwitz who got by taking part in  boxing matches in the camp who eventually had a small boxing career in the US?  I bloody didn’t before now and holy hell it is a story that is well worth watching. And now you can in the movie The Survivor.

First off, wow. I am genuinely shocked I had never heard of Harry, and his story is heavy. He had to fight boxing matches but the loser has to die. That is tense as hell, and more horrifying than I could have thought. This story would need a careful hand to be performed well and Ben Foster is absolutely incredible in the role.

The story starts with him being introduced to a fight in the US as the survivor of Auschwitz.

His career form isn’t great but he is doing this in the hopes of getting his name big enough in the papers. This is in the hopes that his girlfriend who was taken from him in Poland is still alive, and finds him. The movie mostly follows him in the current days as he deals with trying to get a bigger fight, and dealing with his PTSD and memories from that awful place.

The past is presented in black and white and is incredibly compelling. The biggest issue the movie has is some of the present day stuff as he gets and papers for his biggest fight can really drag. This creates some weird pacing at times that can really pull away from the tenseness built by the flashbacks. That’s not to say the present day stuff isn’t relevant, it’s a very fascinating and sad story, but it just feels off at times. The ending is very strong, but between the last flashback and that finale, it feels really long.

The main thing with a story like this is how it is handled. I knew Ben Foster was a pretty solid actor but I haven’t seen this. His acting as the older Harry and in the flashbacks is beyond incredible. I regularly forgot it was even him and was just lost in the character and his journey. The supporting cast is also excellent making for one really brutal watch.

The present day stuff is kind of structured as a boxing movie, but the whole movie doesn’t feel like one.  Instead we have an incredibly acted, incredibly shot, incredible real life story.  Some pacing aside, this is one of these movies you owe it to yourself to watch.  Just don’t expect to be in a great mood after experiencing this heavy as hell story.

The day of reckoning has come to Switch.

With Darksiders now being a trilogy – the most recent game in the series seeing Fury, a bad-ass, fiery red-head, taking on the Apocalypse aftermath, we see War return in the Warmastered Edition, now released on Nintendo Switch.

The mighty portable, which knows no boundaries when it comes to its gaming prowess and capabilities sees Darksiders explode with playability and visuals matched by it’s larger console and PC versions.

If you have recently picked up a Darksiders game, most likely it is the third one, Darksiders III. So, let’s go back to the beginning.

The day that the Apocalypse started. The day that War, the first of the Horsemen answered the call.

Right from the onset it is alluded to players that there is more to the story than just a lone horsemen wreaking havoc on a now destroyed Earth.

The battle of Demons vs. Angels is rife on the surface and skies of the now seemingly dehumanised planet. But something isn’t right.

War’s seal was not broken. So who called him, and why?

The Charred Council summon War back to face punishment for starting the Apocalypse early. War protests his innocence and makes a bargain with the Council. Allow him to go free, unpunished and he will go back to Earth and find out who was responsible for calling war in the first place and starting the end of times.

The Council agrees – but with conditions. Bound to War is a Watcher. A demon that the Charred Council use to keep tabs on War and make sure he is doing what he should.

In-game the Watcher will offer up advice on next objectives and highlights to the main story.

The Darksiders games have always been a third person action RPG.

As you progress through and find collectibles, including souls which are used for currency with the Demon Merchant; Vulgrim, you will be able to acquire shards and powerful combos and level upgrades.

The very first Darksiders title was a game that I had been eagerly awaiting for back in 2010 and did not disappoint at the time. 9 years on (omg… 9 years!!!) the game still holds up by today’s gameplay standards.

The Warmastered Edition which originally released in 2016 saw a graphical overhaul including 4K support. While the Switch currently does not have titles released for it in 4K, there is a rumour that this may change real soon.

Having played across the entire franchise (Darksiders III being my absolute favourite) it was refreshingly satisfying to re-take on the story’s beginning all over again, some aspects of it I had totally forgotten about and they retain relevance to the two predecessor titles; Darksiders II (featuring Death) and Darksiders III (featuring Fury).

As there are four Horsemen I am very much looking forward to the fourth title which should wrap it all up.

Darksiders, one of my favourite action game franchises next to Legacy of Kain / Blood Omen and Devil May Cry.

Now, you can wage War wherever you are.

For the last fifteen years the Call of Duty franchise has been offering gamers some of the best multiplayer combat experiences you can get. The games have also been whipping players from the Second World War into the distant future, provided some of the most well-crafted single-player first-person-shooter games ever made. I’ve often said that many of the Call of Duty single-player campaigns are some of the best movies that I’ve never watched.

Treyarch’s latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise throws fifteen years of single-player narrative gameplay out the window. For whatever reason, with Call of Duty Black Ops 4, we only get a multiplayer game.

Alternating bi-annual releases between Infinity Ward, Treyarch’s Black Ops continued the story started in Call of Duty: World at War. Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare storyline wrote itself into a corner, or rather into outer space, with jet packs and rocket boots. The outlandish sci-fi plot was only remedied by the WW2 reboot, last year. Treyarch’s Black Ops games had pretty-much followed suit with Cold-War escapades leading to a near-future sci-fi setting. With nowhere, narratively, to go dropping the single-player campaign certainly got them out of a scrape.

Still, even whilst widely considered to be the weaker of the COD single-player campaign series, I can’t say that I approve of Black Ops 4 only being multiplayer.

In saying that, there is a kind of campaign, in the form of a training / intro session for each of the ten specialists. Players are treated to an intro cut-scene, showing off the specialist’s abilities, followed up by an onboarding training mission. Then there’s AI-filled skirmish in one of the match types to get you ready for multiplayer. Each session gives players the specialists particular back-story.

This doesn’t make up for the lack of a proper single-player campaign. It does, however, show effort on the developer’s part to introduce players to the multiplayer game and various characters.

About that multiplayer. It would seem, in an effort to avert the spite of folks like me, desperate to pore scorn over the game for the single-player absence, Treyarch have pulled out all the stops.

All your favourite Call of Duty modes are there, Team Deathmatch, Domination, my personal favourite, Kill Confirmed, etc. But each mode has been distilled, each Level tuned to perfecting, no snagging on ill-placed scenery, no awkward jumps required to keep your momentum going. Matches are fast and rewarding. If you die, you deserve to die, if you win it’s because you earned it.

The specialists offer ten customisable classes for players to hone their skills.

Black Ops 4 continues the COD zombies mode, which, to be honest, I’m not usually a fan. This time players get two stories to play through. As with the main multiplayer game, you can play through zombies on your own with bots instead of real people. Not as good, but at least you don’t feel bad leaving a game early.

The inclusion of its own take on Battle Royal, Blackout is a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. The developers have taken the likes of PUBG and given it the COD treatment. Make no mistake, Blackout is Call of Duty Battle Royal.

From the tutorials to the slick gameplay, Black Ops 4 delivers. The whole package is just so polished. The graphics are fantastic, especially the architectural modelling.

There’s no denying my disappointment with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 having no single-player campaign. But, far from being half an offering, the developers have gone all out in creating one of the smoothest Call of Duty multiplayer experiences to date.

With the recent addition of the classic Nuketown map, now available free to owners of the game across all platform, it looks like they are just getting started.

World War II and the Nazi’s have overtaken France. It’s the eve of D-Day.

1944 U.S. airborne troops are dropped in to take down a radio jamming tower that the enemy has set up atop of a church in small town France.

For the first 30 – 40 minutes of J. J. Abrams’ Overlord you will assume that you have walked in to a highly impressive, adrenaline fueled action war film.

It was the first action scene as the aircraft battalion fly into enemy controlled airspace that are likely to be the favourite part of the film. An explosive scene that couldn’t have been done any better.

The story focuses on, initially, four infantrymen Corporal Ford (Wyatt Russell) and soldiers Boyce (Jovan Adepo), Tibbet (John Magaro), Chase (Iain De Caestecker) and Dawson (Jacob Anderson). Dawson doesn’t make it, leaving the trio to penetrate enemy lines towards the besieged country town on an extremely tight deadline. Along the way they are surprised by Chloe (Mathilde Ollivier), terrorized by the Nazi SS General that is in charge of the secret operation in her hometown, she begrudgingly assists the U.S troops and shelters them in the home that she shares with her 8 year old brother Paul (Gianny Taufer)and their aunt, in the heart of Nazi occupation.

It’s not too long after entering the town that the soldiers realise that something else is going on in the rundown church and a stellar war flick slowly ushers us in to something more darker.

During WWII, it’s known that Nazi’s conducted both technological and medical experiments. Overlord from Paramount Films, uses this to produce a cleverly crafted story that really, really keeps viewers engaged.

I wouldn’t coin Overlord as a horror film. It’s not. It’s not really Scifi either, but it has elements of both.

If you are going in to see Overlord blind and have not seen the trailer, be prepared for a surprise.

Gaijin Entertainment, creators of the popular vehicular combat MMO War Thunder, today announced a new, tactical submarine combat game in development, Silent Thunder.

In clashes between three of the major military powers of the 21st century, players will face off against each other in combat on the world’s most powerful nuclear submarines. To get a first glimpse of the unique thrill of a three-dimensional, underwater battlefield, realistic submarine physics and the destructive power of atomic weapons.

Players will be able to utilize modern nuclear submarines of the three major military powers United States, Great Britain and Russia, and each vessel is armed with a unique selection of torpedoes and missiles. Among the powerful armament of the Russian Yasen-class, for example, are the destructive 3M-14K ‘Kalibr’ anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles, popularized due to their presence in recent conflicts. The British Vanguard-class excels in its guided anti-submarine torpedo armament, which may be limited to 4 in total, but at a weight of 2 tons each boasts unparallelled anti-submarine power. The American Virginia-class may have less potent torpedoes on offer, but more than makes up for it with nuclear warheads, each with a yield of 200 kilotons, fitted on dozens of the famous Tomahawk missiles.

Silent Thunder aims for a completely new vehicular combat experience. Well down below in the darkest depths of the world’s oceans, players will have to navigate and detect enemies using sonar and other detection devices, while trying to stay hidden from the ever watchful eyes of their enemies. The slightest noise can reveal their own location – so players need to be careful when activating their active sonar, firing a torpedo, even scraping their outer hull against a rock or iceberg can give the game away. This is a game for true naval tacticians.

The main weapon used in submarine-to-submarine combat are lethal wire-guided torpedoes, underwater predators that can be controlled by the player from launch until the very moment of impact. But as players chase enemy submarines with their torpedoes, they should not forget that launching a torpedo can reveal the own submarine’s position, making it vulnerable to being attacked. Captains will have to keep their cool and simultaneously follow their instruments to spot any potential harm coming their way. Recognizing an incoming threat is vital for survival, as it may just give enough time to dodge, hide behind a rock or an iceberg, or knock it off-course with anti-torpedo traps.

Free-to-play naval action MMO, World of Warships, has recently announced that one of the Royal Australian Navy’s most iconic vessels, the HMAS Vampire, is the latest addition to its ‘Ships of the Commonwealth’ fleet.

The ship’s arrival puts ANZ firmly on the map for the game’s 25 million players globally, and is a reward for World of Warships’ dedicated local fans, who have long requested that the celebrated destroyer be immortalised in the game.

To celebrate the launch, players are invited to take part in a ‘Vampire Marathon’ running from now until December 20th, 2017, in which time they can win the HMAS Vampire by playing just five battles (excluding training missions). After December 20, she will be available for purchase.

Travis Plane, Wargaming ANZ Country Manager, says Wargaming constantly listens to its players and uses their feedback to shape the most authentic battle experiences possible.

“The HMAS Vampire is the number one most requested Australian ship by World of Warships players. It is great to be able to listen and deploy her ahead of Christmas, bringing such an iconic RAN ship back to life 75 years on,” said Travis.

Originally launched by the Royal British Navy in 1917 to serve in World War I, the HMAS Vampire was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy, arriving in Sydney on 21st December 1933. After six years patrolling Australian waters, she was deployed to World War II to form part of the so-called ‘Scrap Iron Flotilla’, performing essential patrol and escort duties as battle for the Mediterranean escalated.

In 1941, the Vampire moved to Singapore, withstanding a barrage of attacks to rescue hundreds of lives in battle off the coast of Malaysia. She was eventually sunk by Japanese forces off Sri Lanka on 8 April 1942, her place in Commonwealth naval folklore assured after 25 years of outstanding service.

Using the ship’s original design schematics, the HMAS Vampire has been recreated in unerring detail by World of Warships’ expert team of historical researchers and designers.

World of Warships plunges players into the world of the most devastating sea battles of the 20th Century. Players are given several types of combat vessels at their command, including aircraft carriers, powerful battleships, versatile cruisers and light and agile destroyers. Each warship has its unique combination of firepower, speed, armour and endurance.

NOW CLOSED – Christopher Nolan’s depiction of the Dunkirk operation which was fought on land, sea and air during WWII takes audiences on a psychological and impacting visual journey of the desperation of 400, 000 ally soldiers and their survival.

Stuck on the beach at Dunkirk with the enemy at their heels, the soldiers could see home across the channel but had no way of getting there. When the troops couldn’t get home, home came for them.

Recently we were able to interview Cillian Murphy, who is known as the ‘Shivering Soldier’ in the five star rated film, which we reviewed HERE.

Hitting audiences with the realism and psychological effects of war, Dunkirk directed by Christopher Nolan and released by Warner Bros. Pictures retells the true story of 400,000 British, French, Belgium and Canadian soldiers who are stranded on a beach in Dunkirk on the front of enemy lines.

With no way to get back home it was the civilians who came to the rescue.

In association with Warner Bros. Pictures, STG has an interview with Irish actor, Cillian Murphy, who plays (or is known as) ‘The Shivering Soldier’ in the movie.

STG: What went through your mind when writer/director Christopher Nolan first approached you to become a part of Dunkirk?

CILLIAN MURPHY: Chris gave me a call and told me there was something he’d be sending me. We know each other well enough that he knows what might interest me, and what kinds of roles I might respond to and see as a challenge. And when it’s a Christopher Nolan film, chances are it’s going to be bloody good. It’s a lovely feeling when he does call you up again. And this one… I was just knocked out by it.

STG: What did you like best about his script for Dunkirk?

CILLIAN MURPHY: What first struck me about Dunkirk was that it wasn’t an American war movie, which so many of the great movies about war have been. If you were making a list of great modern war movies, I can’t think of a British film over the last 30 or 40 years that you would necessarily place on it. So, I think this appealed to Chris as a filmmaker because he recognized something in this story that was hugely unique and that audiences wouldn’t necessarily have seen before.

STG: In the film, you play a character essentially without a name, who is only known as ‘Shivering Soldier.’ What was it about this particular role that resonated with you?

CILLIAN MURPHY: I think my character is representative of something experienced by thousands and thousands of soldiers, which is the profound emotional and psychological toll that war can have on the individual. We first meet him when he is picked up by the Moonstone, which is one of the civilian ships crossing the English Channel to evacuate soldiers at Dunkirk. He’s someone who has survived an experience that is mind-alteringly horrific, only to be told, ‘Actually, we’re just heading back into it.’

The film shifts between multiple interweaving storylines that cover the entire series of events at Dunkirk. But this being a Christopher Nolan film, these different storylines do not unfold along the same linear timeline. Each has its own pace – a week on land, a day on the sea and an hour in the air – and my character pops up in two of those timelines.

STG: And what was it like working with Mark Rylance, who plays the Moonstone’s civilian captain, Mr. Dawson?

CILLIAN MURPHY: It was really special. I’d never met Mark before, but I’d seen him on stage and watched him in films. I think it goes without saying that he’s a phenomenal actor, but he also has this gorgeous energy about him. For the four or five actors who were on that boat all that time, he was just a really wonderful presence to have around. And we got to spend a little time together off the set, which was nice. He is one of my absolute favorite actors.

STG: Your scenes on the ship were shot out on the water aboard the actual ship, the Moonstone. Can you talk about why it was important to shoot on the real thing, as opposed to in a studio water tank?

CILLIAN MURPHY: I think Chris’s determination to capture as much of the action in-camera as possible is why his films have such an intensity and visceral quality to them.

On Inception, I remember shooting on the side of a mountain in a snowstorm, and Chris continued to shoot even when it became absolute white-out conditions. If you want to get the most authentic reactions, or the most truthful responses from actors, throw ‘em into the real sea or fly real Spitfire airplanes over them. The audience will feel the reality of that – the actors certainly do.

STG: What was it like to be on the Dunkirk set and have all these live explosives going off around you, with planes flying overhead and real battleships out at sea?

CILLIAN MURPHY: The craziest thing about it is that, at the center of it all, Chris is absolutely calm. There is no panic. No one is worried about explosions or planes hitting the water or whatever else, because all of it becomes normalized. Chris is in control the entire time, and once he’s got what he needs, it’s: ‘Right, got that. Moving on…’ It’s a carefully orchestrated machine, so it never feels like chaos.

STG: This was your fifth film with Chris, after Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy. Did this production feel like his biggest yet?

CILLIAN MURPHY: My best memories of working on Christopher Nolan films are never the large-scale stuff. It’s the very involved, intensely focused, extremely rigorous work, with Chris right there beside the camera. That’s what I always remember because all of the big stuff – as incredible as it is to witness – doesn’t mean anything unless the human story is driving it.

For me, Interstellar succeeded because it was a very emotional film, and it made me cry. No matter the scale of the set pieces he can pull off or how mind-blowing it is, none of it would have any impact if the story and performances didn’t hit you in the solar plexus.

STG: What impresses you most about Chris when you’re working with him on set?

CILLIAN MURPHY: It’s his vision; his fierce commitment to film; and his comprehensive grasp of the form. You meet directors who are extraordinarily strong visually, and you meet directors who are really great with actors and performances, and you meet directors who are phenomenal on script. But Chris has command of everything. Every person’s job on a film set – he knows every single one of them intimately. So, you’ve really got to be on your game when you work on a Christopher Nolan film. Otherwise he can do it better than you [laughs].

STG: How much did you know about the real Dunkirk evacuation prior to becoming involved in this project?

CILLIAN MURPHY: I’m Irish, and we were a neutral country during World War II, so my understanding was quite limited until I learned more about it through research. It truly was an incredible moment in World War II, and in British history as a whole. It was the result of a wartime offensive that went terribly wrong, leaving hundreds of thousands of soldiers stranded on the coast of France. But it was redeemed by the will and determination of the people to bring these boys home. That’s the ‘Miracle at Dunkirk.’ The scope of this immense evacuation, under extreme duress and despite impossible odds, speaks to both the unity of a nation and the sacrifice and heroism of the individual soldiers and civilians who came together and, ultimately, were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

STG: Do you think the film will inspire people to learn more about the actual story?

CILLIAN MURPHY: Our film is telling a fictionalized account of these events, and our characters are not based on anyone who was actually there, but if someone leaves the theater and wants to discover what really happened and read the incredible stories of the real-life individuals involved, I think that would be wonderful.

STG: What do you hope audiences experience when they see Dunkirk in cinemas?

CILLIAN MURPHY: I hope the film takes people on an exciting, visceral journey into this experience, but that they’re ultimately moved by the human story that anchors it all. That’s what Chris does so well with all films, and very much so with Dunkirk. At its heart, it’s a film about courage and survival and the triumph of the human spirit, really. That might sound trite, but I think in this case it actually applies. That is what the real Dunkirk evacuation represents, and I think that spirit is present in every frame of the film.

In war, no one benefits.

Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan’s depiction of Operation Dynamo which took place on the shores of Dunkirk during the early period of World War II certainly impacts on viewers. Taking a three-way perspective the film unveils the battle via land, sea and air.

A military manoeuvre where 400, 000 soldiers were stranded in Dunkirk, in an attempt to push back the German forces from France.

Soldiers from Britain, France, Canada and Belgium await their fate without provisions or shelter across the shoreline, being able to see Britain, home, safety across the ocean channel but seemingly with no viable evacuation, despite Naval Captain Collins’ (Kenneth Branagh) that he will get the men back to safety.

Unable to go forward and unable to go back, they are pinned down and incessantly fired upon.

For every Red Cross frigate and Gunboat that makes it to Dunkirk is sunk by the enemy.

One at a time they come and one at a time they are destroyed.

British airmen in their Spitfires patrol the waters, at their own peril with the aim to protect the rescue attempt. But even then what they are tasked with goes against the might of the enemy forces.

Dunkirk the film strays away from the bloodshed that we have seen in prior war based films and instead uses a mix of soundtrack and handheld camera techniques to really hit audiences hard with the psychological stress that those fighting for our freedom undergo.

With the evacuation attempts futile, the British naval forces call on civilians to assist.

And here we see true heroism and absolute determination as fishing trawlers manned by fisherman, leisure boats, small dingys and more cross the British / France channel to bring the men home, all the while under fire themselves.

Dunkirk sees a stellar performance from relatively newcomer; Fionn Whitehead who plays Tommy, a young British soldier who not only struggles to survive but during the most difficult times, strives to do the right thing.

It is a raw and visceral film and applauds the extraordinary rescue of almost half a million soldiers by everyday civilians who put their lives on the line to bring the boys home.
