Elon Musk has sparked fresh excitement and debate across the esports world after publicly challenging the best League of Legends players to face off against Grok 5, the newest version of his AI system. Posted on X, the announcement quickly gained traction, drawing millions of views and lighting up discussions about the future of artificial intelligence in gaming.

The challenge proposes a full-scale showdown sometime in 2026, with the goal of answering a question the community has argued over for years: can AI truly beat the world’s best at one of esports’ most complex and team-focused games?

The Rules of the Match

To keep the face-off fair, Musk laid out several strict conditions for Grok 5.

The AI will not be allowed direct access to the game client. Instead, it must look at the same monitor a human player sees, using only a camera with the equivalent clarity of a person with 20/20 vision. Grok 5 will also be restricted to human-level reaction speed and click rate, preventing any inhuman micro precision that AI systems typically rely on.

Musk added that Grok 5 is designed to play any game simply by reading instructions and experimenting, suggesting that the system aims to mimic human learning rather than brute force computation.

Pros and Teams Step Forward

Responses from the esports scene arrived almost instantly.

Former pro and popular streamer Pobelter also chimed in, saying he would love to help as both a veteran and someone who has long wanted to see AI face off against League of Legends at a professional level. He pointed out the earlier example of OpenAI’s bot taking on Dota 2 pros, which Musk himself helped sponsor.

StarCraft also entered the conversation when Google DeepMind co-founder and former pro player Oriol Vinyals expressed interest in setting up a similar AI challenge in Blizzard’s strategy classic. Musk simply replied, “Sounds good.”

AI Has Been Growing in Esports

Grok 5’s proposed match lands at a time when AI is rapidly spreading through the wider esports industry.

In the past year alone, major organisations like 100 Thieves, Cloud9, Dignitas and Team Heretics have partnered with Theta Network to create AI-powered agents for their fan communities.
European organisation GIANTX launched iTero, its own League of Legends training tool designed to analyse gameplay and help players improve.
Razer also unveiled Project AVA, an AI coaching system shown at CES 2025 that helps casual players sharpen their skills.

With AI increasingly woven into training tools, fan interaction, and game analysis, Musk’s challenge feels like the next logical step, bringing professional competition into the mix.

What This Could Mean for 2026

If the event truly takes place, it may become one of the biggest esports spectacles of the decade.
The idea of Grok 5 matching wits with the likes of T1 or other top League teams blends sci-fi curiosity with competitive hype, offering a new kind of showdown that could pull massive global attention.

For now, the esports world waits.

ESL and DreamHack, both part of the leading international entertainment group MTG, are today announcing a three-year-long strategic agreement with Blizzard Entertainment.

The world’s largest esports company and the premier gaming lifestyle festival organiser will create new ESL Pro Tour formats for both StarCraft II and Warcraft III: Reforged, with Blizzard providing a respective prize pool of over US $1.8 million and over US $200,000 for the first season.

Taking over from the StarCraft II World Championship Series, the new ESL Pro Tour StarCraft II will feature tournaments on a minimum of four different continents with the global finals moving from BlizzCon to Intel Extreme Masters Katowice.

Additionally, ESL and DreamHack are building a new competitive platform for Warcraft III: Reforged by introducing the new ESL Pro Tour Warcraft III: Reforged.

After the successful introduction of ESL Pro Tour for CS:GO in September 2019, ESL and DreamHack are proud to announce the second and third games to be incorporated into the global circuit created for players, fans and partners. The competition aims to create a complete path for aspiring players, a compelling story to follow for existing RTS fans, a transparent structure for new esports fans, and viable, high-exposure opportunities for brands and media partners.

The communities of Blizzard Entertainment’s real-time strategy (RTS) games have been going strong for the past 20+ years. Over that time, they have nurtured rivalries, created stars and cemented StarCraft and Warcraft as two of the top global esports.

The first season of the StarCraft II tour comprises seven tournaments in total, including both Katowice 2020 and Katowice 2021 to allow new players to make their way to the top. Two IEM competitions and four DreamHack tournaments will lead up to the Masters Championship at Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2021.

Warcraft III: Reforged esports will consist of one ESL competition and three DreamHack tournaments, culminating in a Championship tournament in 2020. In addition to both ESL Pro Tours, weekly ESL Open Cups will be held for the wider amateur and grassroots community.

Blizzard Entertainment today released major details about BlizzCon 2018, its epic celebration of gaming and community taking place next week.

On Friday, 2nd of November 2018, and Saturday, 3rd of November 2018 PDT (3-4 November AEDT/NZDT), an expected 40,000+ people, and millions more tuning in online from around the world, will come together to see what has become a spectacle of video game culture.

Every BlizzCon is an epic moment in Blizzard history, and this one promises to be another one to remember—from announcements at the opening ceremony to the dozens of stage events, community activities, and esports tournaments taking place across more than 1 million square feet at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

BlizzCon 2018 is sold out, with record attendance expected this year, but Blizzard wants to make sure as many people as possible from around the world can be part of the show. This year, Blizzard is adding to its slate of free livestreams, which include the show’s opening ceremony and all esports tournaments. Last year, over 10 million viewers from more than 180 countries tuned in to BlizzCon.

Blizzard is also enhancing the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket with more features and ways to be part of the show. The BlizzCon Virtual Ticket is a paid service providing the deepest access available to live content, with access to events from every major stage and field reports from the BlizzCon show floor.

It includes the same in-game virtual item bonuses for Blizzard franchises that show attendees receive and comes with access to dozens of videos on demand (VODs) featuring original programming. As a first in Blizzard’s history, this year’s Virtual Ticket also brings home one of the demos being debuted at the show, with the World of Warcraft Classic demo available to players around the world around the same time it goes live on the show floor.

Like last year, online viewers can tune in for free to see the pre-show and opening ceremony on the BlizzCon All-Access Channel starting at 4:30 a.m. AEDT / 6:30 a.m. NZDT.

This year, there are more ways to catch BlizzCon live. Livestreams are available via BlizzCon.com and the BlizzCon mobile app for Android and iOS. For the first time, viewers can watch livestreams using the BlizzCon TV app and the Blizzard Battle.net desktop app, and they can cast to their favourite devices using Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Airplay. They can also watch in more languages than ever, with content available in English, Spanish, German, Korean, French, Chinese, Russian, and Portuguese.

For the first time, the BlizzCon All-Access Channel is airing two additional free livestream previews, from 8:00 a.m. AEDT / 10:00 a.m. NZDT to 9:00 a.m. AEDT / 11:00 a.m. NZDT on Saturday, and again from 9:00 a.m. AEDT / 11:00 a.m. NZDT to 10:00 a.m. AEDT / 12:00 p.m. NZDT on Sunday. Along with the opening ceremony and All-Access Channel previews, all esports programming at BlizzCon is livestreamed for free.

BlizzCon spans nearly every part of the Anaheim Convention Center (with more onsite broadcast equipment than many major league sports events). Blizzard is again featuring a multi-stage opening ceremony that will be simulcast throughout the convention centre. Panels and presentations featuring developers and special guests—and plenty of memorable moments—take place both days of the show across three stages: Mythic Stage, located in Hall D, and the Epic and Legendary Stages, both located in North Hall Level 2.

BlizzCon has traditionally ended with a closing headline band. BlizzCon 2018 is transforming that tradition into a closing music festival featuring three distinct entertainment experiences: the iconic American rock band Train, violinist and performance artist Lindsey Stirling, and DJ and popular actor Kristian Nairn. All three concerts will be streamed live in HD to online viewers via the Virtual Ticket.

Community Night returns with the legendary Costume Contest, Talent Contest, Movie Contest, and Art Contest. Featuring popular VO actors Darin De Paul as host and Matthew Mercer joining the judge’s panel, Blizzard’s biggest annual community stage show starts at 1:00 p.m. AEDT / 3:00 p.m. NZDT on Saturday, 3rd of November 2018, and is available to online viewers via the Virtual Ticket.

Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void is the final conclusion of the epic space opera that began in 1997, with the release of the original game. Starcraft has become a global phenomenon since the days where I sat down on to play the original campaign on a computer that would be considered fit for a museum today.

For those familiar with Starcraft, Legacy of the Void won’t shatter your expectations or be unfamiliar. It will however satisfyingly finish the James Rayner/Kerrigan story arc, and provide a few fun new options that shake up the traditional Starcraft experience.

Legacy of the Void is finally the Protoss’ moment to shine in Starcraft II. The story picks up close to the end of Heart of the Swarm but is preceded by the free three-story prologue Whispers of Oblivion. These three missions are pretty essential from a story standpoint, but luckily they are enjoyable, if simple to play- so I didn’t mind them. Once you’ve completed these introductory missions, Blizzard provides a useful catch up video, as a reminder of the story which started almost 6 years ago in 2010 with the original Starcraft II instalment.

For those who have played Destiny’s The Taken King, the story will seem familiar. Amon, the greatest evil the universe has ever known, has taken control of the series’ main races, in an attempt to gain complete control. It is your job, as Hierarch Artanis, to halt Amon in his path. The story is a bit lacklustre, and soon reaches incredible heights of space opera zaniness, but the story in Starcraft is never really the point. The campaign, as ever, is used as an extended tutorial for a wide range of Protoss units in preparation for the multiplayer.

There is a greater emphasis on cut scenes now, rather than talking heads as has been the case since the original game. Just as in both previous Starcraft II iterations the Protoss has an impressive capital ship, the Spear of Adun which acts as a sort of home base of operations. From the ship you can decide on your upgrade paths, choose missions and interact with the other Protoss on the ship.

You’ll be sent on missions to fight back against Amon’s control. There is the usual mix of objective-based maps and smaller maps where you don’t control a nexus point. The single player campaign features some units that are unique to the single player. I’m kind of annoyed that every single Starcraft campaign acts as if it is the first time you have played the game.

By this stage we all know that you need to place a pylon to power your units, and how to use cannons for base defence. By including these tutorial levels, the game gets off to a sluggish start, which in contrast to the high-stakes and high-energy story Blizzard is trying to tell.

Overall the story missions aren’t anything that we haven’t seen before, but they are familiar, comfortable and despite their shortcomings ultimately enjoyable. The missions are almost insultingly easy on normal mode, so I would highly recommend bumping it up to hard or brutal for a real challenge.

Throughout the campaign you can find solarite to upgrade your home starship, which can grant you helpful new abilities such as an orbital strike, or my favourite the ability to automatically harvest vespene gas without the need for probes. Simply build the Assimilator and forget.

Legacy of the Void features a couple of co-operative modes, the first of which is called Archon Mode. You and a friend, or someone that Blizzard matches you with, share a base and fight together against a single enemy. Alternatively, another co-op mode allows your to become some of the heroes from the Starcraft universe and complete objectives.

If you already love Starcraft, then you will play this game, and you will love it too. For those who have been waiting patiently since 2010 for the Protoss’s time to shine Legacy of the Void is a worthy contribution to the Starcraft universe.

This can’t hide though that it’s just what you expected from a Starcraft II expansion. In many ways Legacy of the Void is somewhat hard to rate; it’s more of the same, but not in any way that is a disservice to Blizzard.

It is too early to tell, even with the expansion’s BETA period, how will it affect the meta. As someone who is in no way a pro player I’m sure there are opportunities in the game’s changes, as yet hidden that will move the game forward. The new classes open up new strategic pathways that will be exciting to see unfold in the competitive scene.

Despite some frame rate issues I encountered that weren’t present in Heart of the Swarm (solved by disabling anti-aliasing) the game played extremely well, and there were no bugs that I noticed. Blizzard’s level of polish is present here – a welcome relief to some of the bigger and buggier games of 2016.

Legacy of the Void is available as a standalone purchase or as part of the Starcraft II trilogy, though if you haven’t ever played Starcraft I think it’s much better idea to go back and invest in the original games.

For Blizzard, Legacy of the Void is both an end and a beginning. Blizzard now has the freedom to move beyond the original narrative set down almost 20 years ago and create new stories and experiences. I expect the next iterations of the series to go in a bold new direction, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Blizzard Entertainment announced today that Heroes of the Storm will officially launch on June 3rd, 2015, following an open beta testing period beginning May 20th. The free-to-play online team brawler brings together a diverse cast of iconic characters from Blizzard’s far-flung realms of science fiction and fantasy, including the Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo universes, and challenges them to compete in epic, adrenaline-charged battles.

Heroes of the Storm invites players to customise heroes to suit their style and then team up with friends for some all-out mayhem.The game features a variety of gameplay modes for players of every skill level, including Cooperative, in which players team up against computer-controlled opponents, and Quick Match, an accessible way to jump in and play versus others.

Experienced players can also join forces against other teams of players in highly competitive, draft-style ranked play.

Heroes of the Storm will launch with more than 30 playable Heroes and 7 dynamic Battlegrounds, each with unique challenges to overcome and even more Heroes and Battlegrounds are on the way. Players can customise the look of their Heroes with a variety of skins, as well as switch between a stable of special mounts that help them cover ground on the battlefield more quickly.

To celebrate the launch of Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard will be holding a live-streamed event on June 1 in London, U.K. Further information will be made available as the events draw closer.
