Spy X Family really caught me off guard when I first got into it. The silliness I really struggled with until it clicked, and when it clicked, oh how it clicked.

The balance of silliness and the seriousness that is going on makes for a really bingeable show. And now with Season 2 on Bluray, I was able to dive in and see more of the Forgers story.

If you haven’t watched Spy X Family before, it is a cracker. It follows two nations that border and don’t like each other. Loid Forger is a spy that has a series of missions, but these require him having a good cover story. As such he adopts a daughter Anya and marries a woman who supposedly just needs help to stay in the country.

Well, it turns out the child Anya has psychic abilities, but after being in an orphanage, just wants a family. Oh and the innocent wife Yor is a badass assassin. The show really works well as it is in everyones interest to hide their talents and other lives, so they all try to keep their skills secret and keep the family together.

Season 2 kicks off with Anya struggling her way through school and some little missions.

The biggest part of the season kicks off with Yor having a mission to keep a family safe from assassin’s on a cruise ship where they will be dropped off on another boat to get to safety. To make sure the cover doesn;t get blown, the Forger family happens to win a trip on the cruise.

The adventure kicks off with Loid trying to be a fun dad, while Yor is busy with her work. By the end Loid is busy at work stopping terrorists, and Yor is being a total bad ass stopping assassins from getting the family. Anya, thanks to her psychic abilities, helps both of them achieve their goals while trying to achieve it secretly.

As far as seasons go, this Season is the best the show has had so far. It’s silly and funny, but loaded with awesome action. Season 1 was good, but boy season 2 is showing it really hitting its stride now. I am not sure how they will keep this up, but I can’t wait to see what will be on offer in Season 3. This is definitely a Bluray that is worth having on your shelf.

Spy × Family is a weirdly fantastic anime.

When I first tried watching it it really didn’t gel with me, but on a second viewing I was enamoured.

The weirdly silly anime humour mixed with the seriousness of a spy thriller, when it clicks, it just clicks. After a fantastic Season One, Part 1, I was eagerly waiting for the blu-ray release of Season One, Part 2, and now it’s here.

When we left off at the end of Part 1, the Forgers were well into their mission as Loid struggled with his mission of a family man and other urgent needs that popped up. I mean, he had to quickly stop a dangerous mission involving a penguin and a weapon while enjoying a day out at the aquarium. Nothing is easy in the spy world.

If you aren’t familiar with Spy x Family, you definitely don’t want to start with Part 2.

But a quick catch up.

Loid is a spy trying to keep the world peaceful. Anya is a mind reading child who lost her parents. Yor is an Assassin who wants to live without suspicion. Loid adopts Anya so he can get a child into an academy so he can spy on another parent. To get her in there he needs a wife to pretend they have a stable family, so marries Yor who wants to be able to not be harassed for being single.

The kicker, none of the three know about each other’s special jobs / lives.

Well except Anya, she can read their minds, but they don’t know she’s a mind reader. Anya just uses that to help though as she wants to keep her family together so she doesn’t have to go back to the orphanage.

Anyway, Season One, Part 2 kicks off with a meeting between Westalis and Ostania where peace talks may happen. Our strange family is out looking for a pet dog when Loid is pulled away for a secret mission, apparently an assassination is being plotted. So while he is being briefed, Anya and Yor go to look at a dog show while they think Loid is having a very long session on the toilet.

Oh and the dog they get can see the future.

Yup the tone of the show is consistent with the last. Insanely serious at time with political espionage, a fun family that is building their relationships, and insane anime comedy as Anya throws curveballs everywhere. And this time instead of meeting someone weirdly in love with Yor, we get someone insanely in love with Loid.

The really interesting part of the show is we are starting to see some real relationships build.

How much of it is Loid’s acting and how much is Yor’s acting is tough to tell.  There seems to be serious feelings and a family building, but is it real? I can’t wait to see where Season Two takes us.

The Limited Edition bits themselves are fantastic.

Like with many Part 2’s it comes in a hard box with space for Part 1.  On top of that is an art book that has been designed to fold out like a newspaper which is so damn clever and fitting for Spy X Family.  Then there is a dope WISE eye sticker, three cool art cards, and what it calls WISE cufflinks, but are actually just two WISE pins. They are still cool though.

Spy x Family has gone from decent to excellent with Season One, Part 2.  If they keep the quality up this could be one of the many unmissable iconic anime series. For now, it’s just a fantastic start.

Spy × Family is a fascinating show that I’ve kind of being enjoying.

I haven’t totally fallen in love with it yet, but when I got the chance to check out the movie Spy × Family Code: White I figured sure, why not. Now I think I am properly sold on Spy × Family.

If Spy × Family is new to you, it follows a very strange family. Loid is a spy who is on a case, but this case requires having a family. He nabs himself an orphan named Anya, but for his wife, he gets himself a young woman called Yor. The kicker is that she is a badass assassin. They both have their own reasons to keep the family facade up, and neither of them know each other’s true identities.

That’s a short synopsis of where we are at. The movie kicks off with Loid being given a new mission which he can’t commit to because of the whole family facade. His agency says they will swap someone else in, and not being happy about that he decides to make himself invaluable. He plans to do this by helping Anya win a school cooking competition.

Some intel tells him that the judges favourite food is a Meremere, a desert that is made a specific way from the judges home town. So the family sets off to find this desert and recreate it for the competition. Unfortunately there are baddies that want to do some serious damage to the peace time that the world is perilously close to the edge of.

Good thing there is a spy and an assassin there to help stop them.

Spy × Family Code: White is a surprisingly approachable movie.

If you haven’t watched the show before it gives you a quick explanation of what’s up, but then barrels into its own story.   It doesn’t rely on knowing too much about the story, and so you can definitely check this one out fresh.

For the most part the animation is pretty similar to the anime series. There is an incredible sequence which is beautifully animated, but it is about Anya needing to hold in a poo. It’s as weird as it sounds, but looks bloody gorgeous. There is also one amazing fight scene that, well it is just incredible on the screen. The rest of the time it looks like a really good quality version of the show. Which to be fair, looks great anyway.

Spy × Family Code: White is a bit silly, very funny, and a really fun rimp that captures the vibes of the show, and makes them even better. Fans of the series and newbies should enjoy this one alike.
