Just when I thought that Samsung had outdone themselves with their last Note device – they go a few steps further.

Last year’s Note10 was a super computer in your pocket – but did fall short on some camera tricks that other smartdevice manufacturers had been placing in to their flagships for months.

Taking the ‘Ultra’ moniker to match their flagship S20’s, with the Note20 Ultra 5G Samsung have given us exactly what we want – and then some.

The mammoth sized 6.9 inch ‘phablet’ boasts a QHD AMOLED rounded (or edge) screen with an almost zero bezel top and bottom.

Absolutely built for 4K or 8K media and mobile gaming with a refresh rate of 120Hz. You can wind it back to 60Hz however my preference even for everyday use is to have the 120 on – it gives you a much sharper and smoother user experience and it saves going in to Display settings to change it out if you’re about to watch something on Netflix or get in some game time.

The front lens comes in at 10MP – the same pixel count as we have seen on their last couple of flagships. However the Selfie camera, a laser cut at the top of the screen, records at 60fps in 4K.

Making this the most original and unique Note in the entire history of the devices the Note20 Ultra 5G has a large rectangular triple lens housing for the rear cameras.

Inside this array there’s the main camera at a whopping 108MP, a 12MP hybrid zoom lens (upto 50x) with periscope telephoto function and finally a 12MP ultrawide. Also within the same housing you’ll find a laser sensor for optimal focusing – and that takes me to the camera modes and smarts on offer.

One of the sore points of Samsung smartphones was night shots. Going back as far as the S10+ the Night mode featured but just didn’t work.

This has totally been sorted – in pitch darkness you’ll get a well lit shot as we had hoped for.

Live Focus and Live Focus Video are retained from prior models and a fav of mine allowing a specified bokeh effect – perfect if you’re wanting to create something a little more professional looking.

Old favourites are still on the menu; Hyperlapse, Pano, Slow Mo and it’s Super variant, Pro and more.

Live Video has been tweaked. Samsung have added a very cool zoom feature where you can manually slow zoom for that drawn out dramatization or real fast zoom in for that sudden moment of realization with customizable bi-lateral audio settings. Essentially drown out background noise as best as possible and focus on the subject if they are speaking – or vice versa. Very cool.

Single take mode we were introduced to in the Galaxy S20. Also within the Note20 Ultra 5G you can tweak the length of the varied bursts and videos it takes within one click of the shutter.

Then there’s Bixby Vision. Yep Bixby is still there, like it or not – but thankfully the dedicated Bixby button has been removed. A button on the handset that I would always bump at the worst moments.

Honestly – the Note20 Ultra 5G’s cameras are the absolute best and feature rich on any smartphone as of writing. And most of these have filtered down and been included in the sub variants of the Note20, but more on those later.

My only concern is the sizeable housing that does stick out from the flush and smooth matte rear casing. You will absolutely need to use a high quality phone case with the Note20.

Samsung have wound back on their massive storage that only a couple of years ago we had (remember the S10+ 1TB?).

The Galaxy S20 series was disappointingly low at only 128GB.

Now we do not have a 512GB Note20 but we are presented with a modest 256GB. As with prior devices that storage is expandable via microSD (upto 1TB). If you shoot alot of video in 8K then likely you will need to add extra storage.

Couple in 12GB RAM and the hyper fast 64-bit Octa-Core Processor crunching data @ 3.0GHz with a maximum of 3.8GHz.

Play hours of heavy resource games without heating up the handset or draining battery. PUBG and Fortnite at 120Hz refresh – all played superbly. (See our Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G gameplay here).

Call of Duty Mobile, one that can be a bit of a power chomper hardly shaved anything off the massive 4500MAh internal battery (Note20 comes with a 4300MAh).

Samsung tout the Note20 Ultra 5G as having an ‘all day battery’. It always depends on your usage of your smartphone as to how your battery will last, of course.

My phone is always buzzing with emails, calls and more day and night. I receive heavy media files, super large graphics and so on – viewing these on an almost hourly basis on the go can shave a bit of my daily use.

Factor in my every day use with aiming to push a device to it’s limits and playing a few hours of mobile games, Netflix and Spotify streaming I would have thought that an ‘all day battery’ would have lasted half a day minimum.

No. The Note20 Ultra 5G is more than capable of keeping up with me and my busy shenanigans while having enough juice to power through the following day aswell.

The most that i managed to squeeze out of the handset was around two and a half days from full charge to 5%.

The Note20 Ultra 5G comes with a 25 watt charge in the box and the phone has quick charge 2.0 smarts builtin. From flat to around half using the supplied the charger takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

For fans of the Note smartphones there have been two drawcards. Screen size (the Note series have always been of the larger variety) and the included stylus called the S Pen.

As the series has evolved over the years so has the S Pen. The Note10 bought us Air Gesture, where you could wave your S Pen in the air near your phone like a crazed magician in order to perform certain functions.

I remember testing this out last year and while I was well impressed and could see where this would evolve I did have moments where maybe I moved too fast or too slow and the Note10 didn’t quite know what I was doing.

This has been resolved. Once you set air gesture to go by a clicking the side button on the S Pen in front of your Note20 differing commands execute various functions. Take a screenshot, control a presentation, take a selfie and no matter what realistic speed I waived around the Note20 Ultra 5G was on point.

The S Pen is not an accessory – if it was Samsung would likely sell it separately. It is an integral part of the Note devices and still is with the Note20 series.

Finer tuned and resembling more of a pen tip the intricate point of the S Pen has virtually zero lag when writing or drawing on screen (infact it is tested at 7 milliseconds).

The bevvy of S Pen options and functions cascade out when you remove from the phone’s casing.

I always find the on-screen writer to be super handy for a quick reminder, shopping list (when you get to the Supermarket and forgot the one you wrote previously) and using the S Pen to tweak photo’s and the more serious nature of taking notes (hence the device name) at media events and talent interviews.

The phone and the stylus go hand in hand. The S Pen is what makes the Note unique and the S Pen needs the smarts and large screen of the phone.

Samsung have opted for a wider range of the Note20 series – differing models and colours to suit all.

The smaller Note20 and Note20 5G come in at 6.7 inches and a slightly lesser spec – and the Ultra and Ultra 5G are the big boys for the more serious Noters.

For those that are still on the fence about 5G then there are 4G variants (those without the 5G in their naming).

Samsung has created the ‘Ultra’ smartphone, built upon Android 10 and provides a seamless integration between your smartdevice and PC with the builtin DEX.

For play, for work the Samsung Note20 Ultra 5G is the super king of all Android smartphones.

There’s a reason that Samsung have been at the top of the Android game for a very, very long time.

Well, there’s a few reasons, but one that stands out every year for me is the annual update of their flagship ‘phablet’ – the Galaxy Note.

In 2011 smartphone users that hadn’t gone down the Apple road were astonished at a Samsung smartphone unlike anyother. It was bigger at 5.3 inch (that was a big phone back then) and came with a stylus which hearkened back to the earlier days of ‘smartphones’ – the early Symbian and Windows OS PDA’s.

Almost a decade later since the first Galaxy Note and with a consistent release of Note’s increasing in size we now have the 10th edition in our tech hungry hands.

The very first Samsung Galaxy Note – 2011

Samsung have taken a different track with the Note series this year. Traditionally there was a singular version of the Note. If you wanted a Galaxy Note, that’s exactly what you got.

But Samsung know that not everyone is the same. Some prefer the smaller handsets and others prefer the mightier screen and specs. So now, there’s two; Note 10 and Note 10+.

Samsung sent over one of their Galaxy Note 10+’s for us to have a play with.

Having the 256GB version (there’s also a 512GB) you’re likely to be the coolest spec’d up kid on the block with 12GB RAM in the Note 10+. The Galaxy Note has always been designed to be a workhorse, for play and serious stuff.

It’s also not the first time Samsung smartdevice to have broken the industry standard of 8GB RAM for a flagship – this year’s S10+ also has the mega-memory for one model.

The all screen Note 10+ weighs in at a 6.8 inch curved wonder with a centered single laser cut for the front camera lens. There’s no notch or bezel. There was a very recent time where 6.8 inch seemed larger than life – how we have become sanitized to phone sizes now.

The fingerprint scanner is under the glass as seems to be the way forward for most smartphone manufacturers. Pleasingly, the under glass sensor is more sensitive and you do not need to press so hard on to the screen as we did with the S10 / S10+.

Depending on which of the two colour variations you go for, Black is black but Aura Glow is a pale cream purple of a rainbow attracting and morphing itself under different lighting conditions. Yes, this is my pick.

The Galaxy Note series has always been built for multitasking, and if you bear the Note 10+ in mind, the 6.8 inch screen allows more than enough real estate to have two windows open at once. Watch Netflix while checking emails. Play a game while… no, just play the game.

Samsung’s built-in gaming optimizing software ensures that you do not get annoying pop ups and notifications while in the heat of battle.

Naturally anything game wise runs on the Note 10+ as the Snapdragon 855 processor hums along. Due to the improved internal cooling system from the Note 9 you can expect a cool and calm play experience aswell as, for the most part, longer battery life for extended bouts.

The usual suspects; Fortnite and PUBG run fine and not once, even while multi-tasking (not gaming) did this beast even get warm. I am curious to see how the mobile version of Diablo handles on the Note 10+ (if Blizzard ever release it!).

Samsung have added a few initiatives to the Note 10’s camera’s and added a spot of fun in the process.

The rear will see you with four cameras in total, nicely streamlined I’ll add in their placement, and their MP counts all break down as follows; Ultra Wide: 16MP, Wide-angle: 12MP, Telephoto: 12MP, DepthVision Camera: VGA. (Note 10 has three rear cameras).

For the front it’s 10MP.

The A.I. (Artificial intelligence) uses both Bixby (love it or hate it) for smarts in your snaps, and A.R. (Augmented Reality) for the super fun stuff.

The cameras not only use 3D space to recognise what they are seeing, they also track in real time. Evidenced by the fact you can scribble across someones face, draw a silly hat on them, whatever, and this will stay put as you record your unsuspecting subject.

The instant Instagram upload feature is still there, inherited from the S10 and the video recordings are in 4K. Optical zoom is still 10x.

Now we get to the reason you’re likely to look into a Galaxy Note in the first place. The S Pen.

This smart stylus has evolved over the years. Going from an almost accessory like feature to an integral function of the Note device.

Connected via Bluetooth the S Pen for the Note 10 / Note 10+ has slimmed down a wee bit more since the Note 9 and it turns in to a magic wand. No really, it actually does.

Air gestures (which Samsung pioneered years ago on Galaxy phones) will see you waving and flicking your S Pen around like a crazed but overly enthusiastic music conductor to wield commands on your Note 10.

Sure, you can just flick through content and functions the old fashioned way, as likely you’re holding your phone in one hand and twirling the S Pen with the other… but to be fair there are times when this is handy – such as having the Note 10 propped on a stand while you step back to take some of those awe inspiring, breath taking selfies that end up in your social media feed.

But air gestures aren’t quite there yet, well, perhaps Android Apps just need to catch up. The main use I got out of air gestures was flicking about with camera modes and twirling the S Pen in the air to zoom in and out.

The top of the S Pen is clickable – that’s it. I think a missed opportunity here, where the top of the S Pen clicked in or out could have been an execution of a command – but that job is taken by the stealthily hidden button to the side of the S Pen.

Making the most of the power house that is the Note 10+ is the built-in DeX function.

Literally just plug n play (software dependent) and use your Galaxy Note 10 on your PC screen. Too easy.

On the body of the Note 10 / 10+ the tactile buttons have moved to the left of the screen. The Bixby button is still there – but you can remap this to something else and unless you fiddle about in settings – there is no power off any more. To restart your Note 10 you do this via the GUI (or the aforementioned Bixby button retooling available in Settings). The 3.5mm audio jack is gone and for wired headphones you will need to use the USB-C socket to pump out the best sounding Dolby Atmos infused audio on any Android device so far.

The Galaxy Note 10 / 10+ is a single sim handset but does have the microSD placement within the nano sim tray.

Powering all of this is a mammoth 4300 mAh battery with super quick charge abilities. Reverse charging for QWireless chargeable device is still there. Super handy if your Galaxy Buds need a quick top up, and something that I am very excited for, the Note 10 / 10+ will also be able to charge up the new Active 2 Smartwatch series from Samsung (current Active / Gear Watch require their specific chargers).

And, if this wasn’t already the complete package – one more thing thrown in, the Note 10 / 10+ is 5G compatible (not in New Zealand models).

Reviewing smartphones during the course of a year it is easy to get in to a trap of saying ‘the best ever’ and then boom something bigger badder and brutish releases and you kind of need to extend that crown.

This said – the Note 10+ totally deserves that crown. It is hands down the best Galaxy Note in the series. A wealth of needed and much welcomed improvements from the Note 9 and the S10 / S10+ is a worthy investment which would see anyone right for a few years before needing to upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has the size, the smarts, the power of being one of the best flagships to own this year.

Samsung have today released their next phablet wonder to the masses and the hordes of ‘Note’ fans across the Globe.

Thanks to Samsung New Zealand I was privileged to spend a small amount of personal time with a 128GB model before the official release date.

Assuming that anyone who reads this review is aware of the ‘Note’ series, an Android based smartphone that comes with a stylus, called the S Pen.

This year we see the S Pen having it’s own identity in the way of personalised colouring, not only in the digital ink but also in it’s physical appearance. The clickable S Pen comes with it’s own smarts making it not an accessory but an integral part of the entire Note9 experience.

Sitting flush at the base of the Note9 the S Pen when popped out will enable either screen writing instantly (for super quick notes) or the S Pen dial Menu that we have seen in the Note7 and Note8. What’s more its 4096 points of pressure make it the perfect artists tool. From light sketches through to full and thick paint dabs. The S Pen has also been built to work with the camera function of the Note9, whereby you can use the click function to remote snap pics.

For me – using the screen writing was something I had been missing in my life. It was so handy.

Jotting down a phone number, a grocery list, a reminder, the number plate of a van that backed in to me and drove off (true story).

The 6.4 Inch OLED screen with an almost no top and bottom bezel and the virtual Home Button (which has been improved upon immensely since the S9) is wide angled for viewing and watching media.

Camera’s front lens is a surprisingly a low 8MP and the dual rear dual lens 24MP (x2 12MP) and while still a fantastic rear camera outputting larger than live detailed snaps there maybe a little bit of a spec catch up needed when compared to comparing to other Android based smartphone manufacturers.

The funtastic A.R. (Augmented Reality) filter is there for selfies amongst a few other Samsung-esque favourites.

But, the Note9 is not all about fancy pics and breathtaking selfies– it’s a complete all rounder. Designed for anything that you would like to do with it.

Samsung partnered up with Epic Games for their Fortnite mobile game, ported from PC and console. Implementing a Exynos 9810 2.7GHz chipset partnered with 6GB RAM (128GB Model) or 8GB RAM (512GB Model) the Note9 is the world’s first super computer in your pocket.

Couple this turbo speed and data caching ability with the AKG enhanced dual internal speakers make the Note9 a serious mobile gaming device.

Samsung have switched things up with device security. There is Samsung’s Knox digital security software builtin to the OS, however hardware wise, the finger print sensor has been relocated from beside the rear camera lenses (Note8) and is now placed directly under the dual lens housing. Then there’s facial recognition and iris scan.

Facial recognition uses a 3D scan of your smiley dial to unlock the phone to the Home Screen. This was flawless and worked with glasses on aswell (including sunnies). The iris scan was also good – however tended to work better without wearing prescription glasses and I found that you needed to stare directly at the scanner sensor which would illuminate like a red laser. The iris scanner worked 8 out of 10 times.

The Note9 still houses the 3.5mm audio socket which is a definite plus and while audio through wired headphones uses AKG enhancements, it was real good but sound volume seemed to a teeny bit limited. For most users it will be loud enough though. The dual sim bay has two trays, one sharing a Sim placement or microSD.

The 512GB model will take a 512GB microSD – thus giving you up to 1TB in digital storage. That’s more than enough, even for me who tends to be a digital hoarder. (Other Models will also take a up to 512GB microSD card aswell).

With all of these hardware and software enhancements naturally you’ll need a heftier battery. Samsung know this and and placed a 4,000mAh in which will most definitely get you through an entire day. With moderate to light use the Note9 will see you right for around three days.

A mere 40 second charge will top you up and keep you going for 30 minutes. A complete charge from totally flat takes less than one hour (around 30 – 40 minutes). The fastest charge (for a minimal top up) I’ve ever experienced. And of course there is wireless charge.

Samsung have really gone a few steps forward with the Note series and have aimed to please both Note fans aswell as offering up a pocket sized super computer for the masses, but at a heavier price tag though.

Still, if you have the budget the 512GB model is the one to go for with the additional RAM. You don’t need to be a super multitasker to reap the benefits of the 8GB – even in every day usage the extra memory will be duly noticed.
