This year sees the return of The Mummy, but not entirely the same as the 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser.

Tom Cruise takes on the role of Nick Morton, a US Army Corporal, who with his friend, Chris Vail are on patrol in Iraq. Nick being more of a soldier of fortune than a actual marine prefers to loot historic sites throughout the ancient history laden Iraq and its surrounding areas, stealing antiquities and selling them on the black market.

After a one night stand with an Archaeologist, Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) he learns of a legend and potential Egyptian burial plot, in which an ancient tomb was said to be located.

Preferring to take the easy road, Nick having strayed too far in to enemy territory finds himself ambushed at the rumoured burial site. Calling in an airstrike, not only clears his path but unveils the whereabouts of the ancient sarcophagus.

Meanwhile, a giant ruby is discovered buried with a Knight in England. The ruby also came from Egypt and is tied to the tomb that Nick uplifts from Iraq. Soon both are rejoined and an ancient evil is awoken.

Ahmanet, an Egyptian Princess who through sacrifices gained the powers of the Gods, rises and wreaks havoc on Earth once more.

The Mummy (2017) if taken on it’s own merits and not confused with the late 90’s film is an enjoyable and satisfying watch.

Tom Cruise’s character tended to be a little despondent at times and it was not a role that I would have ever imagined he would play. Sofia Boutella does an astounding porttrait of Ahmanet, but I felt that the films narrative held her character back.

She was badass but could have been oh so much more.

Nick’s partner in crime, Chris Vail, he gets himself infected by Ahmanet’s dark powers and throughout the film appears as a ghost to Nick, assisting him along the way. Nick also tends to be the comic relief. In my view, the film could have done better without Nick’s character at all.

Then there was an almost unrelated inclusion of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, played by NZ / AUS’ very own Russell Crowe. He himself had been seeking the power of Ahmanet and captures her and holds her prisoner, pumping mercury in to her body to keep her restrained.

This seemed a bit left field to throw in a very well known horror legend in to what was a film about the dark powers of ancient Egypt being unleashed on present day.

Overall, The Mummy (2017) is a film to watch if you just want to zone out for a couple of hours. It’s certainly entertaining and enjoyable but not remarkable.

Where is Amelia?!

A question asked by almost every character within the first 30 minutes of the film. Both funny and witty in it’s deliverance the acting chemistry between Crowe and Gosling resonates well and while the two characters are almost worlds apart it is the difference between them that maintains a winning formula throughout The Nice Guys.

It’s not that often that a film set in the past works in so well with modern day.

Set in 1977, the main characters are played by Ryan Gosling a funny alcoholic father and private investigator and the mighty Russell Crowe who plays a Hitman, both on parallel quest to find Emily a daughter of a Justice chief set on corruption and corporate bribery.

Gosling and Crowe meet as enemies but are quickly united as they learn they have common goals and are set on saving the life of Amelia before either her corrupt mother or other interested parties catch up with her.

The premise behind the film is the controversial direction large Detroit motor corporations were undertaking in the 1970’s. Whilst larger, inefficient cars were being produced, marketing and sold, groups had taken to the streets in protest of the global pollution effects these companies were causing.

Amelia, a fellow protester and advocate for the environment is caught up a montage of drugs, promo and individuals which the hero’s must contend with.

The films chemistry is good but is often cringe worthy at times.

The Nice Guys dry humor will get you laughing, (even if it’s about how much weight Russell has put on) in a time of Disco, Rock n Roll and Hip Vice.

My relationship with Russel Crowe started with such promise, teenage me was convinced that he was god’s gift to acting and that Gladiator was the Citizen Kane of our time. However ever since adult me had the misfortune of watching Robin Hood, my affection for him has been strained. I was therefore sceptical as I sat down to watch The Water Diviner, directed by and starring the man himself.

Set in 1919, The Water Diviner tells us the story of an Australian farmer in travelling from the Outback to Istanbul in order to find the remains of his 3 sons who were lost in Gallipoli during the First World War. These locations have a natural majesty that is hard to match, and it must be said that Russel Crowe has a sure hand in his direction while capturing a sense of grandeur and scale. It’s unfortunate that the actual scripting of this film, as well as its characters fall almost uniformly flat.

In fairness, this film ought to be commended for making a genuine effort to tell both sides of that story, showing the horrors of those battles from both the Anzacs and the Turkish side, drawing attention to the fact that while we lost 10, 000 men, the Turks lost nearly 7 times that number. Had the film been more centred around this, it would perhaps be more successful, however this engaging base idea is eventually lost in a series of plot developments that even the most naïve audience member could predict. Crowe himself is convincing, if slightly shallow, as a grizzled grieving father, however the supporting cast is populated mainly by cardboard cut-out characters. We are treated to cinematic favourites such as the long grieving widow, the scheming uncle, and the mischievous boy reluctantly taken under Russel Crowes wing. One time bond girl, Orga Kurylenko, acts as the (needless) love interest and spends most of her time gazing longingly out of windows and waiting for one of the various men in her life to do something so she can become emotional about it.

With the exception of the Turks, no group is portrayed with any particular depth in this film, the British are sneering bureaucrats, the Australians grizzled down to earth ‘blokes’, however the portrayal of woman is particularly thin, what few female characters are present are all entirely dependent on the men in the film for their characterization.

The films handling of its wartime flashbacks is patchy at best, while Crowe clearly wishes to capture visceral horror, aka Saving Private Ryan, the audience often feels like they’re watching a history channel re-enactment . This is compounded by several shoddily green screened set pieces and a relatively low M-rating for the film as a whole, seriously limiting the scope for capturing the brutality of trench fighting.

There is an interesting film buried here, beneath layers of tired cliché. As a New Zealander, the story of the ANZACS and their courageously fought but ultimately disastrous campaign on Gallipoli is as pertinent as it is familiar, and perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this film is that it could have easily been excellent.

The bones of a unique war film are present, but Russel Crowe never quite commits to the movie this may have been.
