Last Christmas is nothing more than your typical Hallmark movie.

It’s sweet but the story line is predictable which does little to keep things interesting. Nothing seems to go right for Kate (Emilia Clarke), a hapless 20 year old stuck in a dead end job working as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Making one bad decision after the other with a pretty grim outlook on life, self-loathing as she basically gives up on living.

Things soon take a turn for the better when she bumps into the mysterious Tom (Henry Golding), who charms his way into her life and seems too good to be true.

As the city transforms into the most magical time of the year, Tom and Kate appear to grow closer as he helps set her in the right direction to help piece her life back together.

Sure, you don’t go into a film like this expecting to be surprised but neither do you want it feeling like it’s two steps behind you just because you’ve seen the trailer. Yet, as soon as the film delivers its climactic plot twist with the earnestness of a kid tying their shoelaces for the first time, the film quickly trips over its own feet.

If you go into this film expecting a rom-com, then you will be disappointed as there surprisingly isn’t much romance. There is always a place and time for these feel good holiday films, however this particular one feels like a lump of coal wrapped up in pretty packaging.

Both isolated in extreme and unique ways, two ex-lovers recall the events that brought them together the year before in hope it will help their sanity remain intact and let in hope that they might see each other again.

Submergence stars veteran actors Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy as the duo of ex-lovers brought together by chance. You can’t help but think of actor Michael Fassbender, Alicia’s husband and James’ co-star in the X-Men franchise, watching some of his favourites act alongside each other.

This drama / romance had some beautiful cinematography and produced a high-quality indie film. Saying this, Submergence may be one of those films stuck between an indie film and a big budget movie. When you have two of the biggest names in Hollywood leading the film, you are going to need a lot of money to pay them. You can’t deny Alicia and James are great actors though and continue to up their games, even this far into their careers.

Alicia only reminds me of Lara Croft now (a balance of goodness and bad-assery) whilst James is like a chameleon (have you seen him in Split?). Although Alicia’s role in Submergence was tame compared to other works she has done, James’ role still challenged him. His career is a great one to follow.

Sometimes, I struggle with romance in film since most romantic elements tend to eventually end up in the cliché or overused section of narration. Submergence initially went this way (typical boy meets girl) but drifted away from this for the most part (e.g. how the story ends). The typical yearning for each other was still there of course.

Fans of James and Alicia’s work will certainly love this romantic drama. I think we can all admit a certain biased towards an actor’s work occurs if we are a fan of the actor itself, so it makes me wonder whether Submergence relies too heavily on its leading couple and opposed to creating a memorable film.

It’s difficult to imagine any adaptation of Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to be as successful as the original. With all of Disney’s animated films being timeless classics, consumed generation after generation, adapting such a beloved film into live action, catered toward modern audiences, is a risky task but Disney has certainly pulled it off with their brand new Beauty and the Beast film starring an all star cast including Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline and Emma Thompson.

The film follows essentially the same plot and story as its animated counterpart, and the classic fairy tale, in which a young girl takes her father’s place as a prisoner in a mysterious, dark and enchanted castle ruled by a terrifying and monstrous beast, with whom she eventually falls in love. While following the same storyline, the live-action also makes certain additions, which I personally found as rather unnecessary in developing the plot.

A key and original concept which was added into the live-action film was the backstory into Belle’s mother and the truth behind her absence. While, yes, it was nice to know exactly what resulted in her absence in Belle’s life and a reason for why Belle and her father lived alone in a cottage, this was something that we, as the audience, could imply. We did not need to be spoon-fed an explanation. In a way, the live-action film assumes that its audiences aren’t capable of ‘reading between the lines’ and therefore not educated enough to piece the story together without the help of the film’s creators.

Most of the characters in the live-action Beauty and the Beast are portrayed the way I remember them in the original animated film. In my opinion, the cast did a fantastic job of bringing such memorable characters to life in a way that pays tribute to the original. I found that Lumiere (McGregor), Gaston (Evans), LeFou (Gad) and the Beast (Stevens) to have been outstanding in their performance, not only in depicting their characters but also in terms of their singing voice.

Evans and Gad’s rendition of ‘Gaston’ is almost Grammy worthy and the way in which the scene was depicted was thoroughly enjoyable. LeFou’s character appeared far more engaging, witty and all around enjoyable compared to his animated counterpart. Sadly, that can’t be said for Cogsworth (McKellen), whose sarcastic comments and complains were certainly missing in this version of the classic tale. It was rather disappointing that the familiar banter between Cogsworth and Lumiere was missing. Instead, Cogsworth appeared to be rather frail, old and cowardly.

In addition, Madame Garderobe (Audra McDonald)’s excessive loud opera bellowing seemed a bit much and my ears certainly couldn’t handle it (I could just be sensitive to loud, piercing and annoying sounds). Where in the original animated film, Madame Garderobe (the wardrobe) consoled Belle after being imprisoned and encouraged her to have dinner with the Beast, the live-action version was far too loud and kept falling asleep, which was simply unnecessary and not even all that amusing.

Despite certain moments which could easily be forgotten, the live-action Beauty and the Beast utilised all the same songs as the original animated film and even added some original numbers, such as the Beast’s own solo, which was quite delightful. My only gripe with the music is the slight alteration to the lyrics to Belle’s ‘Little Town’ song. That and Emma Watson just wasn’t convincing enough as a decent singer. In fact, to me personally, she came across as almost snobby (I can’t quite think of the right word to use here). Her portrayal of Belle came across as too posh and British rather than the sweet, innocent, yet gentle and caring poor French girl.

The most fascinating aspect of the live-action Beauty and the Beast, to me, is the costumes and visual spectacle that was provided on screen. The amount of detail, colour and variety that went into the costumes was fabulous. Through the use of costume and setting, it is glaringly obvious where the film is set and in what time period. In terms of visual effects, the ‘Be Our Guest’ number was absolutely stunning, striking and one of the most colourful moments in film this year. The use of brilliant CGI should also be noted as all non-human characters looked exceptionally detailed and rather antique.

Overall, the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is a true testament of the magic of Disney and does the original animated classic justice. With a brilliant cast comprising of some big names and an enchanting tale that will continue to ignite the fairytale spark in generations to come, Beauty and the Beast is a must watch. Just watch out for the unnecessary moments that might leave you a little bored.

On the acquisition John Gough, General Manager Madman NZ comments “Madman have a long standing history with local content and couldn’t be happier to be bringing this unique and charming feature to audiences across New Zealand and Australia.”

Chronesthesia had its world premiere in Wellington, at the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) and played in competition at Austin Film Festival. It’s also been accepted to the Sonoma International Film Festival and is currently playing a small season at Nga Taonga Sound & Vision in Wellington, where it has a final screening on Saturday 25th February which features a Q & A with the cinematographer, Simeon Duncombe.

Producer Kelly Kilgour says the team are stoked to be working with Madman. “We’re a huge fan of the Madman catalogue and the team couldn’t be happier that they’ve embraced the film and have found a home for it on their slate”.

Chronesthesia received four nominations at the Rialto NZ Film Awards (the “Moas”), which will be presented last weekend and picked up a win for Best Sound (Phil Burton, Underground Sound).

The deal with Madman means local audiences will be able to enjoy the self-funded indie romance on DVD and Digital platforms, from June onwards.

A few years back New Zealand film industry professionals, Ample Films Ltd and in an association with Auckland’s Unitec Institute of Technology got together to collaborate on Stars in Her Eyes.

Up and coming aspiring actors were cast in a first of its kind in New Zealand, where students from Auckland’s Unitec Institute were invited to participate in the production and marketing while Ample Films took the lead and overall investment.

Written by Athina Tsoulis, Lucy Zee and Danny Aumua and Directed by Athina Tsoulis, who has a few other feature films to her credit, Stars in Her Eyes debuted at Auckland, New Zealand’s grandest theater; Sky City Theater on Friday the 18th of November 2016.

Stars in Her Eyes is a romantic comedy film, styled from the Bollywood genre.

It tells the story of Anousha Patel (Leila Alexander). A 30 years old Indian girl living in suburban Auckland, New Zealand. Anousha takes care of her elderly Mum who recently had a stroke and she pens a column a fortune telling column for a local newpaper.

Anousha has one older sister Lakshmi (Negin Allaverdi-Gorji) who is married already and appears to have a successful life and also two brothers, Damon (Mohit Sharma) and Sanj (Colin Mathura-Jeffree) who are in stark contrast to eachother. Damon’s artistic endeavours don’t sit too well with the family monarch and father played by Mohinder Anand whereas the oldest; Sanj is a New Zealand Cricketing legend and the ideal child in the family.

Anousha is pushing 30, slightly over weight and still a virgin. Her time is taken up by caring for her disabled Mum, while her siblings live their own lives, the most distant one being Sanj who with his sports is generally always from home… however the prodigal Sanj also has a secret that he is trying to keep under wraps.

Given mis-guided advice from her childhood friend and neighbour Jay (Eli Mathewson) Anousha sets out on a path of discovery of self-worth, sexuality and determination to find a boyfriend.

That opportunity arises when she she sees Raj (Vinay Chinni) a local Bank Teller. He catches her eye, but Raj doesn’t seem to notice Anousha, even though he himself is seeking love with the unhelpful assistance from his workmate Miten (Tarun Mohanbhai).

Anousha engineers it so that their paths cross via her Stars column. Raj had been writing in to the column seeking relationship advice. The responses he gets are very specific and tailored to Anousha who begins a mission to attract Raj.

However when the two finally meet and begin dating Raj turns out to be a bit strict and almost jeapordises the blossoming relationship.

Stars in Her Eyes is fully comedic, where it takes a tongue in cheek view on Indian family culture, life in New Zealand and how a Indian woman’s life can be controlled by her culture, family and even friends.

It’s a film that has been made by a whole series of newcomers in to the industry. Not just the students that assisted from Unitec Auckland, but the actors aswell, with the exception of Colin Mathura-Jeffree, who is internationally known for his two seasons of New Zealand’s Next Top Model and New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker, aswell as being an international male super model. Tarun Mohanbhai who plays Raj’s close friend and workmate Miten is also known as a regular on the New Zealand professional Comedian circuit.

All actors, from Negin through to Vinay, Eli, Mohit, Mohiner and even the Bank Security guy played by Jansen Ryan make the entire story and they equally give outstanding performances of their respective characters. However lead actress Leila Alexander makes Stars in Her Eyes the film it is as her personality as Anousha Patel shines out. Leila herself was a law student at the time of production.

Stars in Her Eyes is at it’s essence a film worthy of New Zealand’s cinematic history books and a film that everyone must see.

Stars in Her Eyes will be showing at select cinema’s in Auckland and will release on VOD (Video on Demand). I am hopeful that we see more collaborations with learning institutes such as this in the future.

If there is a locally produced film to see right now, this is it. A truly outstanding piece of theater produced garnering a deserved five stars from us.

So be sure to get some Stars in YOUR Eyes all the while supporting New Zealand’s local film industry.

Written and produced by Avengers Alumni Joss Whedon, In Your Eyes tells the story of Rebecca (Zoe Kazan) and Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) who share a connection that allows them to experience each other’s emotions, feel when the other gets punched and ultimately through the eyes of the other’s POV. In spite of never meeting before (Rebecca lives in New Hampshire while Dylan lives in New Mexico), the two form a bond through somewhat of an invisible thread that is pulling them together.

Under the official selection at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, In Your Eyes grants its viewers a fascinating and incredibly clever storytelling experience. As an avid film fan who tries to immerse myself in as many different films as possible, I can freely admit that I’d never seen a film quite like In Your Eyes especially in regard to the relationship of Rebecca and Dylan and the bond they formed.

Because of this, it’s rather difficult to pin point a specific genre. With elements of drama and romance, the fantastical side of In Your Eyes can’t be ignored either, providing an interesting balance of the real and the surreal.

Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David are brilliant actors who barely spend any screen time together but somehow manage to make it seem as though they do. It was funny (in a good way) to experience Rebecca and Dylan’s relationship grow from their perspectives whilst others around them questioned their sanity most of the time. One of my favourite scenes would have to be when the two of them wanted to ‘see’ what the other looked like so they looked in the mirror at ‘themselves’. Most scenes, such as this, complied of cutting backwards a forwards between the two characters but never in a jarring way, more so in smooth juxtapositions.

In spite of this, In Your Eyes did lack in character development. Even though some back story was provided in bursts of dialogue and one sequence at the start of the film, it wasn’t enough to make me form an emotional connection between the body of characters throughout the film. A part from Rebecca and Dylan, supporting and minor characters felt boring and uninteresting probably because they didn’t really have much to provide a part from their roles as plot devices.

The ending of the film was somewhat rewarding but also a tad jarring. Without giving away the context, I finished the film wanting more or more specifically wanting to know what happened next because the ending could have gone multiple ways. Saying this, I do understand that sometimes an audience doesn’t need to have an ending set in stone and that it’s fun to leave it open to interpretation.

In Your Eyes may be lacking in some areas but it most certainly makes up for it in its originality and compelling storytelling techniques.

All it takes is one moment in time for everything to change.

Golden Time, an anime produced by J.C. Staff and distributed by Madman Entertainment, is based on a Japanese light novel and manga series depicting themes of love, friendship and the struggles to accept one’s self. Neatly wrapped into a 24 episode long series, Golden Time will tug at your heart strings and one that I personally recommend to all who enjoy a heartfelt and oftentimes laugh out loud funny anime.

Golden Time is not just an anime; it is a journey into the trials and tribulations of the lead character, Tada Banri’s, life. Having been in an accident soon after his high school graduation, Banri suffers from retrograde amnesia, having lost all of his memories prior to the accident. Now a freshman at a law school in Tokyo, Banri attempts to move forward with his new life while forsaking his past, making new friends and even meeting a new girl who he becomes completely besotted by. But what happens when a significant person from his past returns to his life?

In trying to move forward, Banri meets and befriends Mitsuo Yanagisawa and in doing so, comes face to face with Kaga Koko, a rich, beautiful, selfish, snob of a young woman who we learn is obsessed with Mitsuo, her childhood friend with whom she has never been apart from, insisting that the pair are destined to marry. Being an all-around nice guy, Banri takes it upon himself to help both Mitsuo and Koko by befriending Koko and assisting her in overcoming her obsession and encouraging her to expand her interests into other areas. During the course of the initial week of University, Banri also meets second year student, Linda, who triggers aspects of his former life to return which poses a threat to his budding relationship with Koko.

Golden Time is written beautifully, with a plot that is both emotionally appealing and engaging as it draws viewers in with its comedy, relatable slice of life story, and an almost tragic tale of love and loss. One of the reasons why this anime is uniquely enjoyable is due to the very realistic portrayals of first loves, insecurities, longings, companionship and finding one’s true self. The characters are interesting, each with their own unique identifiable characteristics. Despite being obsessive, clingy and incredibly insecure at times, Koko’s love for Banri is pure and absolute.

Being as stunning and seemingly well put together, she could have her choice of any man, however, she falls in love and chooses to spend her time with a rather average, less than perfect guy, who just so happens to be the kindest and most understanding person who is able to handle the whirlwind that is Koko. Banri, too, is a character worth paying attention to. Whilst cheerful and carefree on the surface, there appears to be a myriad of deep and rather troubling emotions seeping through, threatening to break him.

Even though there is some semblance of comfort and familiarity with Linda, who appears to be the cool, calm and collected upperclassman, what keeps him sane and secure is Koko and her love. In that sense, the anime portrays what true companionship is and the power of true love. It illustrates the rather well-known fact that one never forgets their first love but that does not mean that the heart is incapable of truly loving another.

Not only are the characters a delight, the incorporation of some incredibly silly comedic moments make Golden Time an anime to get you smiling and laughing even on the toughest days. Though, as much as there are moments of glee and laughter, there are equal amounts of raw and unbridled emotion as the characters speak about and describe their inner-most feelings of hurt, betrayal and deep-seated pain. As a viewer, you’ll find yourself feeling all kinds of emotions, from joy to sorrow to numbness, when watching this anime. My recommendation would be to just see it through to the end and enjoy the journey along the way.

The art style is one particular aspect that makes Golden Time as visually eye-catching as it is. The illustrations of Tokyo and its inhabitants look fairly realistic for an anime and each character has their own individual style. For example, it is rather obvious why Mitsuo is highly sought after by members of the opposite sex and why Koko is looked upon as an irresistible model. In addition, the use of appropriate and fitting soundtrack carries Golden Time’s plot forward, arousing a more touching and emotive narrative. I have to admit that I find the music used in the opening and closing credits to be particularly catchy too.

I thoroughly enjoyed each and every episode of Golden Time and found myself relating to both the characters’ personalities and their plights, which only added to my love for this anime series. Despite being a romantic drama, Golden Timehas several jaw dropping moments, twists, turns and intriguing moments that will leave you wanting more. The way in which this anime will force you to ‘feel’ will stir up emotions that you didn’t think you’d feel when watching an anime. It will make you laugh; it will make you cry; and at the end of it all, you’ll come to realise just how precious life, and the people in it, are and that what matters most is being with the person who complements and completes you.

Based loosely off the autobiography and life of John Boorman, Queen and Country is the anticipated sequel to the 1987 film Hope and Glory but you don’t have to have seen the first film to enjoy the second film.

Also written and directed by John Boorman, Queen and Country is a charming and somewhat nostalgic film that achieves fidelity without feeling as though Boorman held his story too close to his chest. Saying this, written and directorial direction does hold nearly all of the power when it comes to storytelling and filmmaking. There are no doubt a number of films controlled by the hands of Hollywood who have altered numerous stories for fanciful reasons.

It’s interesting to watch a film based off a realistic account since Boorman was able to hold the reigns himself. In Queen and Country, it almost grants the story and characters more respect and understanding.

The film follows Bill Rohan (Callum Turner) in the 1950’s as he is drafted into the army in the prime of the Korean War. In spite of how most ‘war’ films or ‘period dramas’ involve action and the devastating effects of war, not once do we see Bill in the field or shooting a gun. Luckily for Bill and his fellow recruits, the Korean War had less of an impact than WW2 and WW1 so death and sacrifice was something that Bill would never have had to fear.

Most of these young men would have only been children in WW2, much to the dismay of older Army superiors who actually fought and survived WW2. Queen and Country was rather revealing in this sense. What happened to the men who survived WW2? What happened to the men that were lucky enough to heal to a degree both physically and emotionally?

In the case of Queen and Country, many of these men continued to climb the ranks. Richard E. Grant’s character Major Cross wished to put aside the traditional ‘army rulebook’ for a new era whilst David Thewlis’ character Bradley spent his days criticising others for not following it.

Once again, I find myself critiquing a film’s promotional material. Queen and Country has elements of romance and why wouldn’t it? It’s a period drama of course. Nevertheless, Queen and Country felt more like a coming of age film with romantic elements rather than a full blown romance between two people. After having seen the film, I can reveal that a photograph with Bill and a blonde woman in a yellow dress (often used as a promotional picture) isn’t even his love interest but instead his sister who, in the scene, joyfully jumps into his arms because of his return home.

It’s almost as though the filmmakers later realised that there wasn’t actually that much romance between Bill and Ophelia (Tasmin Egerton) in the film so they altered the scene with Dawn Rohan (Vanessa Kirby) because they both happened to have blonde hair and could be around the same age.

As most period dramas are, they aren’t for everyone, but I can say that Queen and Country can hold its own ground. With a comfortable pace, pleasing mise en scene and simplistic cinematography, Queen and Country is an enjoyable film to sit down and watch for a night in.

The DVD series collection, licensed by Madman Entertainment, released in New Zealand in 2015.

The anime follows Yokodera, a high school student who also happens to be the biggest pervert in town, and Tsukiko, his junior. Yokodera has a one track mind focused solely on girls, from their soft and sweet femininity to the outline of their bodies through to see-through clothing. However, this isn’t a problem to him. Instead, he believes that the issue is due to his inability to drop his emotionless façade when attempting to lie his way out of being caught out for his indiscretions.

Tsukiko, on the other hand, believes that her problem is being childish and emotional, blurting out whatever comes to mind without much thought. The solution they both find is to visit the Stony Cat statue, which is said to have the ability to remove an unwanted personality trait. The only catch, that personality trait doesn’t just get taken away, it’s given to someone else who is in need of that trait. As a result, Yokodera can no longer stop himself from saying exactly what’s on his mind and Tsukiko has lost all ability to express emotions. The only way to return to normal is to find the person their personality trait was given to.

Anime has always taken what should be impossible and turned it into something that becomes completely natural. The Stony Cat is a perfect example. Who would actually believe that making an offering to a cat statue would mean your one wish will be granted? In an ideal world, this would be the perfect solution to mankind’s many problems. Another question I had was, who would openly admit and be proud of being a pervert?

This anime was certainly different to ones I’ve seen in the past. It is very much a harem style anime, wherein there is one main male character with a number of female characters who end up falling for him. Harem style animes aren’t for everyone. Some can be done very well and incorporate humour and sometimes even some dramatic moments that pull you in.

Others are blatantly sexual, with excessive amounts of nudity (or fan service as anime fans refer to it) and innuendo that often times is pointless. This anime is sexually charged but does so in a not-so-in-your-face manner which I appreciated.

Throughout the anime I was slightly irritated by Yokodera’s lack of tact but I suppose this is exactly what the creators intended.

The good thing is that Yokodera has a very redeemable quality in that he is a kind hearted and an extremely caring guy. He may be a pervert but at least he’s a good friend. Tsukiko, on the other hand was unnerving due to her lack of expression. I’m not sure about others but I certainly don’t respond well to a monotonous tone and personality. Again, for me to feel that way means the creators did a good job in portraying Tsukiko exactly the way they intended, as a girl who really needs her expressions back.

Another thing that bothered me was the character of Azusa, who plays a snobby girl who really is just a loner in desperate need of friends. She’s important to the plot for a few episodes, after which she becomes just another girl with feelings for Yokodera. A bit more character development would have been helped but this isn’t the kind of anime where you need a well thought out character journey to drive the anime.

Speaking of character development, the anime took me completely by surprise with the character of Tsukushi, Tsukiko’s older sister and the captain of the track team. She’s first introduced as a no nonsense captain who’s always on Yokodera’s case and it is quickly revealed that she keeps her distance from her sister, wanting to break their sisterly bonds, something Tsukiko desperately tries to change by wanting to become more mature and less of a cry-baby.

Yokodera takes on the protective older brother role and tries to save the sisters’ relationship. This is where what I believed was a good plot line turned into something more peculiar and slightly disturbing. Tsukushi reveals the real reason she wants to break her sisterly bonds with Tsukiko and the reason is one that you’ll never imagine.

I won’t spoil it for you but this was the point where the anime really became interesting and made me curious as to how everything would play out between the characters.

When it comes to selecting an anime to watch, art style is of particular importance, to me at least. I find that I enjoy anime a lot more when the characters look more realistic and there is a lot of colour and detail in terms of the anime art. The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat’s art style seemed very simple and basic to me, with the characters’ eyes being way too huge for my liking. I found that I just could not take them seriously.

If you’re fussy about how visually impressive something is then this anime will be slightly disappointing. That is not to say that the art style is bad. On the contrary, the art is satisfactory but that’s about it.

All in all, I wasn’t too taken with this anime.

In comparison to other animes I have watched, The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat lacks pizazz and a storyline that’s enticing and gripping. Instead it is a more light hearted anime that takes the idea that girls are all that high school boys think of a bit too far and portrays some of the female characters as cool and fascinating up until they fall for the main male character. A harem anime is just that, a harem anime.

If you are into that sort of thing then I would recommend this anime to you. If you watch anime for the plot, well, then I’d suggest you look elsewhere.

Based off the Thomas Hardy novel of the same name, Far From the Madding Crowd follows Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) as she questions love, relationships, work and independence in Victorian England. As a determined, strong and independent woman, Bathsheba’s thoughts and opinions are challenged as she meets three very different men who all vie for her affection.

It’s certainly understandable for storylines that are set in Victorian England to follow themes of love, marriage and emancipation.

We do need to remember that Far From the Madding Crowd is based off a novel published in 1894 by a writer who was living in this particular time period so of course the film takes on these themes too. We all know how picky the audience can be about novel adaptations and any possible changes to the script. This 2015 film version stays fairly on the path of the original Hardy novel.

Even though Bathsheba would end up making particular decisions such as marrying Sergeant Francis Troy (Tom Sturridge) or considering a marriage offer to William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), we all knew she would end up with Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), the first suitor.

You could tell straight away by his introduction at the beginning of the film that the two would be together by the end of the film. I think by now in twenty first century film making, there aren’t many options for how a love story could pan out that haven’t already been done.

The narrative does take its audience on interesting twists and turns throughout the plot too though. Gabriel’s fate for example was an interesting way to start his story and I wasn’t expecting his character to remain loyal to Bathsheba in a non-romantic way.

Gabriel accepted his fate and adapted in a selfless way by respecting Bathsheba’s choices and remaining kind and sincere towards her unlike the arrogant Francis or restless William.

Effort went into eaxh scene as usually does with period dramas in order to establish the story and setting. Period dramas always know how to beautifully depict the English countryside or cobblestone streets coated in rain of which I admire.

Carey Mulligan as protagonist Bathsheba played the role respectively but the film would not be what it is without its ensemble cast. Matthias Schoenaerts as Gabriel and smaller roles played by the likes of Juno Temple as Fanny Robbins and Jessica Barden as Liddy stood out as prominently as Bathsheba in spite of having less screen time.
