Whilst watching Hell or High Water, I immediately reminisced to films such as Bonnie and Clyde or Thelma and Louise. The obvious connections would be the crime and drama genre connections and the tale of a pair taking this journey together. Although I wouldn’t necessarily class Hell or High Water a road movie as opposed to Bonnie and Clyde or Thelma and Louise because plot circumstances are different, Hell or High Water certainly follows a similar narrative path and takes its audience on a journey with its characters.

It’s no surprise feelings of the old west linger in the air when watching Hell or High Water. There are Texas rangers after all and that southern accent dominates throughout the film.

Starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water follows two brothers as they rob the branches of the bank threatening their family’s ranch. One brother is recently out of prison sentence, the other estranged with his ex-wife and kids.

Initially the pairing of Pine and Foster was hard to respond to, meaning it was difficult to find the chemistry. Physically their appearance as brothers didn’t really help either. There’s a moment in the film that talks about how the two look alike and I was curious as to whether we were watching the same film.

In spite of this, as time goes on, you get to see how the brothers interact and what their relationship is like. As a viewer I felt much more interested and invested in Pine’s character and I almost wish we got to jump more into his backstory and struggles when dealing with his brother. Because you get the gist of how things could have been, it would have been interesting to know more and grant us better emotional connections with the characters. The stakes, in turn, might have also been higher.

I do have to commend the writer and director for taking on the crime/western genre in a world of big budget science fiction or action films. The gritty setting of Texas was complemented by cinematography and miseen scene that was pleasing and rewarding to the film’s overall aesthetic.

Hell or High Water may be lacking in some areas but it all makes up for it as a whole. Although I would have loved to have seen more refined decisions around narrative choices, the veteran actors hold the reigns and give us a fairly enjoyable drama.

Jon (Dean O’Gorman) is an out-of-luck writer, on the run from his publisher and on a mission to rejoin and patch things up with his fiance (Antonia Prebble) after abandoning her at the worst possible moment.

It’s not long in to the film before Jon meets Luke (James Rolleston), who himself is on the run, from the Criminal Underworld and the Law.

Together, in a stolen Mini Cooper they begin a road trip like no other from Auckland aiming to get to Invercargill.

Kiera (Ashliegh Cummings) who works the drive through window at a fast food restaurant loses her job for her very customer focused protests against the sale and consuming of meat products. Wanting to join a Animal rights / Vegan Protest in Wellington, she meets the unlikely duo and soon the group becomes a trio as she leaps in to the mini for a free ride to Wellington.

Labelled the ‘Blondini Gang’ by media, Jon, Luke and Kiera become unlikely heroes and national icons as both the public of New Zealand, news outlets and of course the law follow their exploits as they drive down country making some surprising allies along the way, it’s one hell of a ride that none of them will forget.

Pork Pie is the reimagining of the classic and cultural phenomenon Goodbye Pork Pie from 1981. Taking it’s inspiration from that first film Pork Pie is a road movie for a new generation, produced by Tom Hern and Directed by Matt Murphy, the son of Geoff Murphy who was the original Director of the 1981 film.

Superb on-screen talent with beautiful cinematography of New Zealand as the backdrop, Pork Pie will have you laughing and secretly wishing you were apart of the Blondini Gang right up until the end.

Pork Pie is a joyride of a film, littered with Kiwi humour yet peppered with serious tones. It takes everything that is Kiwiana and then adds to it. Pork Pie is history in the making (or re-making).

In cinemas across New Zealand from the 2nd of February 2017 this one of the films you NEED to see this year.

Shane: Hi Tom, thanks for talking with us today. Can you give us a little bit of info on your background as an Actor and Producer and how you came to be Producing the remake of a NZ Classic from 1981 – Pork Pie?

Tom: I started out when I was still at High School in Christchurch where I got an aftershool job working as a reporter for the kids show ‘What Now?’, when I was only 13 or 14 (years old). So, it was a pretty cool job, I got to interview a lot of my favourite bands when they came to town and actually and actually review Video Games back then. I would do Games and Music reviews, it was a kids dream job really and that’s how I got into the industry.

Then I moved from that in to acting when I was 15 (years old) and started out on a SciFi Show called ‘The Tribe’ and I played a paraplegic polygamist on that show, a bit of a gnarly villain. Then I was on Power Rangers for a Season and then Shortland Street, then I reached a point where I wanted to be involved in Films and I wasn’t getting cast in them as an actor so I thought, well I’ll go and Produce one.

It was with my buddy James Napier Robertson who was another actor friend of mine and we decided to make our first movie which was called ‘I’m Not Harry Jensen’. So we raised the money and made that movie, then I just started moving away more and more from acting towards being behind the camera, which I love.

Shane: Is this the first feature film that you have Produced in New Zealand?

Tom: No, it’s my fourth. So I produced ‘I’m Not Harry Jensen’ an arthouse one called ‘Everything We Love’, The Dark Horse which was quite a big hit for us, starring Cliff Curtis and then Pork Pie is my fourth feature film.

Shane: What inspired you in to remaking Pork Pie?

Tom: It was initially Matt Murphy who came to me with the idea. He had been developing a script for a few years but had a few road-blocks with it. I came onboard to get the movie made, basically, to get the finance and get it moving. Matt and I became a partnership on the project, worked really closely together, worked on the script a bunch and then brought all of the money together. I read Matt’s script and I could see a rollicking, length of the country, road movie doing as well in 2017 as it did in 1981. I felt that we could bring a real fresh energy to a new generation. That’s how it all started.

Shane: Were there any of the original cast or production staff from the 1981 film that contributed to Pork Pie 2017?

Tom: Heaps. The Writer / Director (Matt Murphy) he worked on the original film, his Dad was the Director (of Goodbye Pork Pie 1981), he worked on it as a teenager. And his sister; Robin Murphy worked on the original film as a costume person, and on our film she was the On-Location Manager. Then a bunch of Bruno Lawrence’s kids and grandkids and also a bunch of Murphy’s, so yeah, there’s a real strong whakapapa (family) there.

Shane: Now that production on Pork Pie has wrapped up and is releasing to cinemas on the 2nd of February 2017 what is next in line for you?

Tom: I’ve got around six or seven Feature Films in development, and I don’t know yet which one of these will push its head forward and be the next project to be honest. But we actually have our first (TV) Series in development, which we are really excited about making. It’s about the Polynesian Panthers, I can’t talk about it too much.

Shane: Very awesome. Thanks for chatting with us at StG today. Really appreciate it and we are looking forward to the film; Pork Pie.

Tom: No worries, thank you so much man.
