It’s a smartphone, it’s a tablet, it’s the OPPO X 2021 concept device without the fold crease.

I was honoured to be able to sit down and have a play with OPPO’s (currently) concept phone-tablet hybrid at OPPO’s head office.

When not expanded the OPPO X 2021 is a killer 6.7 inch Android powerhouse with 128Gb ROM (storage), 6GB RAM (memory) and powered by a Mediatek MT6853V processor (specs are subject to change if this phone is released commercially).

There are TOF (time of flight) cameras on the rear and from the back the OPPO X 2021 looks just as fantastic and futuristic.

Un-expanded the 6.7 inch screen is as vibrant and popping as any of OPPO’s latest flagships.

But opening up the OPPO X 2021 is of course where the magic happens.

The OPPO X 2021 is not a foldable.

The screen rolls open and to do this you need to have the phone unlocked and swipe slide touch on the right side.

If you are about to get in to some serious PUBG gaming or streaming media you can continue uninterrupted from the standard view to the expanded view (watch our demonstration in the video above this post).

OPPO engineers have put alot of innovation into the OPPO X 2021.

To expand the screen super smoothly it uses a metal mesh base which rolls in and out of the inside of the phone. Attached to that is a super strong warp track laminate. When expanded the OPPO X 2021 is 7.4 inches – currently the largest in any any phone tablet hybrid.

The OPPO X 2021 is good for around 5 and a half years of average use, or 100,000 extractions.

I asked what would likely happen after that time and was told that the inner motor which drives the roll out screen would begin to wear out.

Being that this is a concept phone and is not available commercially, it is early days for the OPPO X 2021 and I believe that if this smartdevice rolls out (see what I did there) to the consumer market we would see further improvements made, including lifespan.

I personally hope to see the OPPO X 2021 released. Having spent some time with it myself I can most definitely see me not only using the expanded screen on a daily basis but also the multitasking options available in split screen mode on a whopping 7.4 inch FHD screen that I can easily fit in to my pocket when retracted and is not likely to weigh me down like the heavier foldables.

OPPO’s engineers were tasked with creating a phone tablet hybrid without the center crease. They achieved it to the bare millimeter using micro technology.

Huawei are forging ahead despite their ongoing ban from the Android operating system.

In Munich, Germany the mega tech Chinese based company launched the annual upgrade to their Mate series – the Mate 30.

With glitz, glamour and fanfare the phablet device (largest version being 6.8 inch) was revealed to not be built with Google Apps.

Instead Huawei will be using their own App store, with Huawei based Apps.

The Mate 30 comes in two versions: standard at 6.6 inch and the ‘Pro model weighing in at 6.5 inch.

As we have seen with previous iterations of Huawei smartphones, it’s all about the camera’s.

Using Leica lens technology, the Mate 30 has a 40-megapixel camera with a f/1.8 aperture, an ultra wide-angle 16-megapixel f/2.2 camera, an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto camera, and a “laser focus” sensor. Phew – that’s a lot.

Both models have the standard 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage and are powered by Huawei’s own super chipset, the Kirin 990.

On top of this there’s a third option.

There’s a reason that Samsung have been at the top of the Android game for a very, very long time.

Well, there’s a few reasons, but one that stands out every year for me is the annual update of their flagship ‘phablet’ – the Galaxy Note.

In 2011 smartphone users that hadn’t gone down the Apple road were astonished at a Samsung smartphone unlike anyother. It was bigger at 5.3 inch (that was a big phone back then) and came with a stylus which hearkened back to the earlier days of ‘smartphones’ – the early Symbian and Windows OS PDA’s.

Almost a decade later since the first Galaxy Note and with a consistent release of Note’s increasing in size we now have the 10th edition in our tech hungry hands.

The very first Samsung Galaxy Note – 2011

Samsung have taken a different track with the Note series this year. Traditionally there was a singular version of the Note. If you wanted a Galaxy Note, that’s exactly what you got.

But Samsung know that not everyone is the same. Some prefer the smaller handsets and others prefer the mightier screen and specs. So now, there’s two; Note 10 and Note 10+.

Samsung sent over one of their Galaxy Note 10+’s for us to have a play with.

Having the 256GB version (there’s also a 512GB) you’re likely to be the coolest spec’d up kid on the block with 12GB RAM in the Note 10+. The Galaxy Note has always been designed to be a workhorse, for play and serious stuff.

It’s also not the first time Samsung smartdevice to have broken the industry standard of 8GB RAM for a flagship – this year’s S10+ also has the mega-memory for one model.

The all screen Note 10+ weighs in at a 6.8 inch curved wonder with a centered single laser cut for the front camera lens. There’s no notch or bezel. There was a very recent time where 6.8 inch seemed larger than life – how we have become sanitized to phone sizes now.

The fingerprint scanner is under the glass as seems to be the way forward for most smartphone manufacturers. Pleasingly, the under glass sensor is more sensitive and you do not need to press so hard on to the screen as we did with the S10 / S10+.

Depending on which of the two colour variations you go for, Black is black but Aura Glow is a pale cream purple of a rainbow attracting and morphing itself under different lighting conditions. Yes, this is my pick.

The Galaxy Note series has always been built for multitasking, and if you bear the Note 10+ in mind, the 6.8 inch screen allows more than enough real estate to have two windows open at once. Watch Netflix while checking emails. Play a game while… no, just play the game.

Samsung’s built-in gaming optimizing software ensures that you do not get annoying pop ups and notifications while in the heat of battle.

Naturally anything game wise runs on the Note 10+ as the Snapdragon 855 processor hums along. Due to the improved internal cooling system from the Note 9 you can expect a cool and calm play experience aswell as, for the most part, longer battery life for extended bouts.

The usual suspects; Fortnite and PUBG run fine and not once, even while multi-tasking (not gaming) did this beast even get warm. I am curious to see how the mobile version of Diablo handles on the Note 10+ (if Blizzard ever release it!).

Samsung have added a few initiatives to the Note 10’s camera’s and added a spot of fun in the process.

The rear will see you with four cameras in total, nicely streamlined I’ll add in their placement, and their MP counts all break down as follows; Ultra Wide: 16MP, Wide-angle: 12MP, Telephoto: 12MP, DepthVision Camera: VGA. (Note 10 has three rear cameras).

For the front it’s 10MP.

The A.I. (Artificial intelligence) uses both Bixby (love it or hate it) for smarts in your snaps, and A.R. (Augmented Reality) for the super fun stuff.

The cameras not only use 3D space to recognise what they are seeing, they also track in real time. Evidenced by the fact you can scribble across someones face, draw a silly hat on them, whatever, and this will stay put as you record your unsuspecting subject.

The instant Instagram upload feature is still there, inherited from the S10 and the video recordings are in 4K. Optical zoom is still 10x.

Now we get to the reason you’re likely to look into a Galaxy Note in the first place. The S Pen.

This smart stylus has evolved over the years. Going from an almost accessory like feature to an integral function of the Note device.

Connected via Bluetooth the S Pen for the Note 10 / Note 10+ has slimmed down a wee bit more since the Note 9 and it turns in to a magic wand. No really, it actually does.

Air gestures (which Samsung pioneered years ago on Galaxy phones) will see you waving and flicking your S Pen around like a crazed but overly enthusiastic music conductor to wield commands on your Note 10.

Sure, you can just flick through content and functions the old fashioned way, as likely you’re holding your phone in one hand and twirling the S Pen with the other… but to be fair there are times when this is handy – such as having the Note 10 propped on a stand while you step back to take some of those awe inspiring, breath taking selfies that end up in your social media feed.

But air gestures aren’t quite there yet, well, perhaps Android Apps just need to catch up. The main use I got out of air gestures was flicking about with camera modes and twirling the S Pen in the air to zoom in and out.

The top of the S Pen is clickable – that’s it. I think a missed opportunity here, where the top of the S Pen clicked in or out could have been an execution of a command – but that job is taken by the stealthily hidden button to the side of the S Pen.

Making the most of the power house that is the Note 10+ is the built-in DeX function.

Literally just plug n play (software dependent) and use your Galaxy Note 10 on your PC screen. Too easy.

On the body of the Note 10 / 10+ the tactile buttons have moved to the left of the screen. The Bixby button is still there – but you can remap this to something else and unless you fiddle about in settings – there is no power off any more. To restart your Note 10 you do this via the GUI (or the aforementioned Bixby button retooling available in Settings). The 3.5mm audio jack is gone and for wired headphones you will need to use the USB-C socket to pump out the best sounding Dolby Atmos infused audio on any Android device so far.

The Galaxy Note 10 / 10+ is a single sim handset but does have the microSD placement within the nano sim tray.

Powering all of this is a mammoth 4300 mAh battery with super quick charge abilities. Reverse charging for QWireless chargeable device is still there. Super handy if your Galaxy Buds need a quick top up, and something that I am very excited for, the Note 10 / 10+ will also be able to charge up the new Active 2 Smartwatch series from Samsung (current Active / Gear Watch require their specific chargers).

And, if this wasn’t already the complete package – one more thing thrown in, the Note 10 / 10+ is 5G compatible (not in New Zealand models).

Reviewing smartphones during the course of a year it is easy to get in to a trap of saying ‘the best ever’ and then boom something bigger badder and brutish releases and you kind of need to extend that crown.

This said – the Note 10+ totally deserves that crown. It is hands down the best Galaxy Note in the series. A wealth of needed and much welcomed improvements from the Note 9 and the S10 / S10+ is a worthy investment which would see anyone right for a few years before needing to upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has the size, the smarts, the power of being one of the best flagships to own this year.

This year has seen the rise of OPPO.

Going from strength to strength and only one of few smartphone manufacturers to innovate, as they did with the Find X.

It is actually hot off the heels of the Find X that the second iteration of the R17 Pro is released.

The Chinese based manufacturer knows how to fuse elegance with technology.

The fog and mist inspired hue on the outer case is dark and rich – but not as vibrant and artful as their last released flagship device; (again) the Find X.

The R17 Pro has boosted the camera functionality yet again.

It seems the norm is now for phones to be equipped with a tri-lens and the R17 Pro does just that.

With a 25MP AI equipped front camera for those all important selfie moments, also utilized for 3D face scanning and facial recognition for security, the beauty filter is still there, but you can tone it down so that you don’t look like a barbie doll.

The rear tri-lense is a whopping 12MP + 20MP which if you do the math, combined is going to give you 32MP for supreme detail in your snaps and FHD video recording.

The cameras have a whole swathe of both amusing and seriously impressive AI and features where you can, umm, enhance your facial features, for better or worse and mostly for the amusement of others. But moreover the R17 Pro’s camera technology has been built for low light and night time shooting.

Here it exceeds more than any other smartphone camera on the market.

Using wizardry that is proprietary to OPPO the low light snaps pull in whatever light is available for a vivid splendor of a night time shot. Both with the rear and front cams.

Amazingly the front camera is a single lens with little room for sensors (although they are definitely there) as the notch on the R17 Pro has been narrowed completely down to a dew drop.

The size of the phone is almost at phablet size – 6.4 inch and the finger print sensor (for security) has been placed under the glass.

The processor is mid ranged at 2.2GHz octa (8) core. This is enough to get your game on, with the likes of PUBG, ARK: Survival Evolved and Fortnite. During my play with the R17 Pro, it never failed with either of these three, usually taxing games and also pleasingly the battery was hardly touched during a 3 – 4 hour play session of PUBG or ARK.

The model that we received from OPPO was the 6GB RAM, 128GB storage (ROM) version.

And yes, thankfully OPPO have retained the microSD expand-ability. As microSD cards get larger in size (currently 512GB and a rumored 1TB releasing in 2019 / 2020) it is more important than ever to have this expand-able option. Currently the OPPO R17 Pro is configured to read cards up to 512GB.

If you are not a digital hoarder like me, then you can place in a second simcard in to the microSD slot and wield two sims on the go.

The Battery is a 3700mAH. On standby it will last for well over one week. For moderate use the battery will give around 4 days, similar to other recently released high end devices.

A quick charge of around 8 – 10 minutes will get you almost at half capacity from full. Using VOOC the R17 Pro will not only charge up lightning quick but also optimizes the battery performance throughout use.

While OPPO have added USB-C,  finally upgrading from the now aged micro-USB socket, the R17 Pro does not support wireless charging.

This will be a big setback for some. It was for me.

Audio through either the headphones or phone itself is clear enough, and booms at a high enough volume to please my fussy ears. The ColorOS 5.2 is overlayed on top of Android 8 and with this comes not only some UI enhancements but also expected audio filtering aswell.

In all the R17 Pro is a damn fine step up from the R15 (released in July 2018 / NZ). It ramps the camera specs ten-fold, but when compared to the Find X, I would still have to recommend the latter.

OPPO do prove time and time again that you do not need to take out a mortgage, empty your life-savings or sell a vital organ to have a lot of grunt in a smartdevice.

For most, mid to heavy smartphone users the R17 Pro is going to do exactly what they need and survive a heavy couple of days of selfies, social, gaming and media watching.

OPPO themselves have coined the R17 Pro as a midrange device. Yes, in some respects it is, but overall, it is higher spec’d, especially so when it comes to the camera’s and more closer to a top shelf handset at almost half the price of it’s competitors.

At the same time today in Munich, Huawei announced the HUAWEI Mate 10 Series, which will open the door to new AI mobile applications. The HUAWEI Mate 10, HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro, and Porsche Design HUAWEI Mate 10 are breakthrough AI devices that combine innovative hardware, the Kirin 970 chipset and EMUI 8.0. The HUAWEI Mate 10 Series continues its legacy of superior product performance and long-lasting battery life, while integrating New Leica Dual Camera technology.

Hot off the heels of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ comes the next iteration in the Note series from the smartphone front runner manufacturers, Samsung.

Looking more sharper edged and square than it’s predecessors the rectangular smart device brings home so much innovation and technology pack jammed into a 6.3 inch size.

Samsung’s Note handsets have always been on the larger side crossing over into the phablet area, previously they hovered around the 5.9 inch, making the Note8 being the mightiest of them all.

Taking from what has made the Galaxy S8 a much coveted and very unique handset, the Note8 is all screen, with an onscreen Home button. All branding removed from the face of the phone and the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen curves at the sides giving it the Edge experience.

So is the Note8 a S8+ with a stylus? Well, yes and no.

Within the inner-workings Samsung have gone all out. The unit that we were supplied with from Samsung is 64GB ROM (of course upgradable via microSD to 256GB) but there are other variants at 128GB and even 256GB. Then there’s a massive 6GB RAM (a milestone achievement in a smartphone) is built in to see you right for more multitasking than you’ll ever need. The Exynos 8895 Octa and Quad Octa-core running at 2.3 GHz per cylinder makes the Note8 the Maserati of the smart device world so far.

Bixby makes the leap from the S8’s over to the Note8 with a dedicated tactile button to the left of the phone. As I predicted, Bixby has evolved a thousands times over since we were first introduced to the A.I. Personal Assistant on the S8.

Bixby will utilise the camera with Bixby Vision to find similar images, information from an image or translate text from an image. It also correctly advises you on internet searches via voice command or text and it can also do dictation. The dictation, to be fair can be a bit hit and miss. There is some setup involved for this, so that Bixby can learn the sound of your voice, but even after this, it gets spoken words correct around 90% of the time. That’s damn good.

Bixby is always learning more about you (whether that’s creepy or not, I’m still undecided) and will tailor news updates and such the like based on what it thinks your interest are. Yes, this is something that Google has been doing for years too.

Swiping Left from the Home Screen will open up Bixby aswell, here via Cards (similar to Google Cards) Bixby displays relevant info and news or event updates.

Dual lenses have also been added to the rear 12MP Camera. working in tandem to give you around 24MP in total, the camera also various intuitive modes, to the point where you can fine tune your snaps by pin-pointing the focus on one certain subject with an adjustable Live Focus function. Your pics or vids will snap or record in 4K.

Various modes feature such as Hyperlapse, Food, Pro and more including my favourite, the Virtual Shot. There is an abundance downloadable too including Animated Gif which I recommend having a play with.

And, for those Snapchatters out there, there’s the stickers and such the like that can be added to your everyday pics, with more downloadable.

The front camera is 8MP, and asides from being able to use similar modes to the rear camera, given the calibre of the Note8 I thought that the 8MP was a little on the low side for the ‘Selfie’ Camera. There is a downloadable Mode called Rear Camera Selfie, it will take portait pic using the higher MP rear lens and at the same time, snap you and then place your image into the single shot taken with the rear camera. Clever.

Still it focuses and snaps in FHD and both front and back have one of the best low light capacities I have experienced.

Being a Note phone, it also comes with the in-built stylus, called the S Pen.

As we saw with the Galaxy Tab 3 the S Pen is not just an accessory – it’s a substantial and crucial part of the device.

Removing the S Pen from it’s internal dock will activate a pop up side Menu. Naturally you can take notes, draw on screen, jot down quick reminders – and the coolest of all edit and enhance, or completely draw on photos as you would do with, say a Wacom tablet for PC.

To compliment the Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) OS is the Samsung Experience 8.5 reskin which sees alot of swiping here and there to get from Homescreen to Apps, through to long press to manage the installation and uninstalls of Apps and shortcuts on the all-screen phone.

To address the elephant in the room – the Battery (which as you may remember was an issue on the Note7). Samsung have gone back to the engineering of the inbuilt battery and placed safety first.

The OS will also learn your sleeping and waking habits, when you usually charge your device and when you need it to have maximum juice. And it also boost charges so that you can get around 60% charge after a 10 – 15 minute plugin via the USB-C from almost 0%.

For average every day use the phone will last around 18 to 20 hours, heavier use, such as VR or game playing will reduce that length to around 6 – 8 hours, which is not bad at all.

Differing initiatives are on offer for device security, Facial or Iris Recognition through to the tried and true Fingerprint scanner. Still, however, the Fingerprint sensor is at the rear of the device, cosied up next to the dual lens of the rear camera. So, until you get used to the placement of the sensor, without turning your device over, you are likely to have a smudgy camera lens as you feel around for the sensor. I still feel that it is not the best placement for it and would have been a better design to have placed it separate from where the lenses are.
