Aurora have finally broken their long-standing curse. After falling short twice this year, the Turkish powerhouse clinched their maiden LAN championship at PGL Masters Bucharest 2025, edging out Legacy in a gruelling 3–2 grand final that stretched over six hours of high-stakes Counter-Strike action.

The victory marks a defining moment for Aurora, who had come painfully close to glory at both the BLAST Bounty Season 1 Finals and the Esports World Cup earlier in the year. This time, they went all the way, claiming the Bucharest crown and a massive confidence boost ahead of the upcoming Budapest Major.

“I’m happy, I’m satisfied with the boys,” said captain Engin “MAJ3R” Küpeli after the match. “The goal was to win here. That’s all I can say.”

The Grand Final: A Marathon Battle Against Legacy

Aurora’s path to victory wasn’t smooth sailing. The Turkish squad took early control on Dust2 before Legacy clawed their way back with relentless force buys, only for Aurora to snatch the opener 13–11 after a late surge.

On Mirage, Ismailcan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş showed his class, leading Aurora with a massive +13.78% round swing as the team secured a 13–8 win. With strong performances from Ali “Wicadia” Haydar Yalçın and Samet “jottAAA” Köklü, Aurora found themselves one map away from their first LAN title.

Legacy weren’t ready to roll over, though. The Brazilian side fought back on Train and Inferno, taking both maps through sheer grit and clutches from Eduardo “dumau” Wolkmer and Lucas “lux” Meneghini, who posted a monstrous 2.70 rating on Inferno.

That set the stage for a dramatic decider on Nuke. jottAAA kicked things off with a quad-kill pistol round, and though Legacy rallied back to an 11–8 lead, Aurora shifted gears in the final rounds, sealing the title 13–11 to the roars of the Bucharest crowd.

XANTARES Claims His Career-First LAN MVP

Alongside the team’s triumph came another milestone: XANTARES finally earned his first-ever LAN MVP award. The 29-year-old Turkish star delivered an exceptional performance throughout the tournament, finishing with a 1.27 average rating across 23 maps and a 1.36 rating in the grand final alone.

His consistency was undeniable—second in overall K-D differential (+75), second in ADR (90.7), fourth in kills per round (0.82), and second in impact rating (1.58). It’s a long-overdue recognition for a player who’s been a cornerstone of Turkish Counter-Strike for nearly a decade.

Previously, XANTARES’s only MVP title came online, at DreamHack Open Summer 2020 Europe with BIG. Now, with Aurora’s Bucharest win, he’s proved himself once again, this time on LAN, in front of the world.

XANTARES ends a 5-year wait with his 2nd MVP medal 😎 pic.twitter.com/PWjAbU0AiX

Redemption After a Rough Season

Aurora’s road to the top wasn’t easy. The team had stumbled earlier in the event, suffering back-to-back losses to HEROIC and SAW. MAJ3R later admitted that this was “the toughest period” the squad had faced in years.

But their resilience showed. They rallied against B8 in the quarter-final, dominated GamerLegion in the semi-final, and outlasted Legacy in the five-map decider. “Sometimes things weren’t going our way, but today we managed to make it for the first time,” said Özgür “woxic” Eker. “Before the Major, it’s going to give us great confidence.”

Community Reactions: Joy, Pride, and Memes

Fans across the Counter-Strike community erupted with emotion following Aurora’s long-awaited win. Turkish supporters flooded social media with celebration, with one user declaring, “The curse is over. Aurora finally did it!”

Others praised XANTARES’s achievement, calling him “the Turkish GOAT” and celebrating his first LAN MVP. Even critics admitted the team’s persistence had finally paid off. “Congrats for the first trophy,” wrote one fan, while another added, “SO WELL DESERVED.”

While debates continued online over whether Bucharest qualified as a “Tier 1” event, the sentiment was clear, Aurora’s journey from near-misses to champions captured hearts and headlines alike.

What’s Next for Aurora

With their first major LAN win now secured, Aurora enter the Budapest Major 2025 with renewed energy and confidence. After years of grinding, heartbreaks, and almosts, the Turkish giants have proven they can go the distance.

For MAJ3R, woxic, Wicadia, jottAAA, and MVP XANTARES, Bucharest was more than just a tournament, it was a statement. Aurora are no longer the underdogs. They’re contenders.

Fan Reactions: Time Zones and Sleep Schedules

While excitement for PGL Masters Bucharest is high, the global CS2 community had plenty to say about the match timings.
Brazilian fans were quick to note that both Legacy and paiN Gaming will be playing at 5AM local time, making it tough for South American viewers to tune in live.

“I’d love to watch these matches, but I’m not waking up at 5AM on a Sunday for a Tier 2 tournament,” one fan wrote on HLTV, sparking a lighthearted debate about dedication versus practicality.

Others, however, were quick to defend the schedule, pointing out that the matches are aligned with local Romanian time zones. As one commenter put it, “You do realise that match times are according to the location of the tournament, right? Before blaming PGL?”

Fans in Europe and Oceania, meanwhile, were much happier with the timing, with one Australian user joking, “7PM for me – good time to eat dinner and watch from 8PM.”

Aurora and GamerLegion Seek Redemption

Among the most anticipated storylines are Aurora Gaming and GamerLegion, both looking to bounce back after inconsistent results.

Aurora enter Bucharest as the highest-ranked team in attendance, but their recent form has been shaky, placing mid-table at events like ESL Pro League and the Thunderpick World Championship. Their first challenge will be Fnatic, the current Fragadelphia Blocktober champions, in what promises to be a fiery match.

Meanwhile, GamerLegion face FlyQuest, a rising team from the Asia-Pacific region. Despite once being a top European contender, GamerLegion’s recent struggles could make this a surprisingly tight series.

What’s at Stake

With a massive $625,000 first-place prize on the line, every match at PGL Masters Bucharest 2025 counts. The event also serves as a critical momentum builder heading into November’s Budapest Major, where many of these same teams will compete again.

Given their recent form and hunger for a Tier 1 breakthrough, Legacy may well be the team to watch once again. Their fans would love nothing more than to see back-to-back trophies added to their cabinet before year’s end.

PGL has officially revealed the full line-up for the upcoming PGL Masters Bucharest 2025, with 16 teams set to battle it out in Romania’s capital from 26 October to 1 November for a share of the $1.25 million USD prize pool.

The event has already stirred debate in the CS2 community. Only two of the top ten squads in Valve’s Regional Standings (VRS), Aurora Gaming and Astralis, have accepted invites to compete. Powerhouses like Vitality, G2 Esports, Team Spirit and Team Falcons have all opted out, most likely due to the clash with IEM Chengdu 2025, which kicks off just days after the Bucharest event.

Originally, PGL Masters Bucharest was scheduled to finish on 2 November, just 24 hours before IEM Chengdu began. PGL shifted the finals forward by one day to create a two-day buffer, but only Astralis, HEROIC, 3DMAX and PaiN Gaming committed to playing in both tournaments.

Full Team List

Here’s the confirmed roster of teams for PGL Masters Bucharest 2025:

Aurora Gaming

Astralis

3DMAX

PaiN Gaming

HEROIC

Team Liquid

Fnatic

Ninjas in Pyjamas

MIBR

Legacy

GamerLegion

SAW

BetBoom

Gentle Mates

FlyQuest

B8

While some of the biggest names are absent, the mix of Tier 1 and underdog squads could make for a wide-open and unpredictable competition.

Format and Schedule

The tournament begins with a best-of-three Swiss Stage, with the top eight advancing to the playoffs. From there, a single-elimination bracket will determine the finalists. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five, and fans will also get a third-place decider match.

The event runs from Sunday, 26 October, and concludes on Saturday, 1 November.

Storylines to Watch

One of the biggest talking points heading into Bucharest is Team Liquid’s reunion with Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski. After stints with Complexity and FaZe Clan, EliGE returns to the organisation where he spent eight years and achieved the peak of his career. Liquid will be hoping his return sparks a revival, especially after recent struggles that included a surprise upset at BLAST Premier Rising.

Meanwhile, Astralis and HEROIC will carry the Danish flag as the most established names in the field, while teams like Aurora Gaming and 3DMAX will look to prove they can capitalise on the absence of giants like Vitality and G2.

With StarLadder Budapest Major invites just around the corner in October, and with the event feeding into the road to IEM Cologne Major 2026, the stakes at Bucharest couldn’t be higher.

Parivision have raised concerns over the latest Valve Regional Standings (VRS) update after finding themselves ranked 35th instead of what they believe should be closer to 25th. The CS2 team argue that the September 1 rankings failed to include their results from the ESL Challenger League Season 50 Europe Cup 1, which wrapped up the very same day.

Official statement from PARIVISION regarding the VRS ranking pic.twitter.com/ee3WJaz3G9

— PARIVISION (@parivisiongg) September 2, 2025

In an official statement, Parivision pointed out that HLTV’s own calculations, which included the ESL Challenger Cup results, placed them around 25th. For the team, this difference is not just a matter of pride. Rankings directly affect invitations to upcoming events and could play a massive role in shaping their season.

Valve’s System and the Timing Issue

Valve update the Regional Standings on the first Monday of every month, a rule that has been consistent for years. Because the ESL Challenger League finals ended on September 1, the exact day of the update, those results simply did not make the cut. Analyst Graham Pitt noted on Twitter that any tournament not completed by the time of the update will not be counted until the next cycle.

Any events that aren’t finished at the time of the update are not included. Valve updated at approximately the same time they do every month so there isn’t anything out of the ordinary here.

TO’s really shouldn’t plan events to end on the Monday of the update.

— Graham Pitt (@messioso) September 2, 2025

This has sparked debate in the CS2 community. Some see it as unfortunate timing, while others argue the real fault lies with ESL for stretching out the tournament. The ESL Challenger League had a long gap between matches from August 16 to August 26, which ultimately pushed the finals into the Monday update window. Reddit users pointed out that if ESL had scheduled more consistently, the event could have wrapped up in time for the standings.

What Parivision Could Miss Out On

The biggest talking point is what Parivision stand to lose because of this technicality. Sitting at 25th rather than 35th would have put them in contention for an invite to PGL Masters Bucharest 2025, a key event running from 24 October to 2 November. The tournament is part of the global Counter-Strike calendar with a stacked prize pool of $1.25 million split between players and organisations.

With many top-tier teams already locked into other events like the CS Asia Championships in Shanghai and IEM Chengdu, there was a realistic chance that Parivision could have secured an invite if they had been ranked higher in September’s VRS. Instead, their current 35th place leaves them outside of the invite window, forcing them to rely on future updates or declined invites from bigger organisations.

Image via HLTV.org

Community Reactions

Reactions online have been mixed. Some fans sympathise with Parivision’s frustration, saying that the standings should reflect the most up-to-date results possible. Others argue that Valve’s system has always been clear and consistent, and that the blame lies with ESL for dragging the tournament past the cut-off.

One Reddit user summed it up by saying, “That’s what happens when a tournament decides to have its last games on a Monday. Not a great situation, but no way around it.” Another added that the real complaint should be with ESL for poor scheduling, not with Valve.

Looking Ahead

For now, Parivision will remain at 35th in the Valve Regional Standings until the October update, when the ESL Challenger League results are expected to be included. Whether that will be enough to secure invitations to future events such as PGL Masters Bucharest 2025 is still uncertain.

The situation highlights just how influential the VRS system is for CS2 teams, especially those outside the top tier. A difference of ten places can be the difference between competing on one of Counter-Strike’s biggest stages or watching from the sidelines.

With PGL Masters Bucharest 2025 just around the corner, the September standings will directly determine which 16 teams earn a ticket to Romania to fight for a share of the $1.25 million prize pool.

Team Spirit on top after BLAST Bounty triumph

Spirit’s rise to first place comes off the back of their win at BLAST Bounty Season 2, where they beat The MongolZ in the Grand Final. The victory not only gave them another trophy to their cabinet but also the points they needed to overtake Vitality.

Team Vitality, who had been holding onto the top spot since March 2025, stumbled after being knocked out in the semi-finals. That slip means the French side drops down to second in the global VRS for the first time in months.

The MongolZ and 3DMAX climbing fast

Elsewhere, The MongolZ continue to prove themselves as a top contender. After winning the Esports World Cup in August, they’ve now moved up from fourth to third. Aurora Gaming also made it back into the top ten following their strong run at the same event.

Meanwhile, 3DMAX made one of the biggest jumps of the month. Their win at Perfect World Challenge Series 1 saw them rocket from 13th to 8th, firmly cementing themselves as a team to watch heading into the end of the year.

Not every team had a positive update though. Passion UA had a rough September, dropping from 20th to 33rd after a winless run at DraculaN Season 1.
