Pirate survival game Windrose has sold over one million copies in less than a week, developer Kraken Express confirmed on 19 April 2026. The Early Access title also passed 200,000 concurrent players on Steam over the same window, with SteamDB clocking a peak of 222,134, putting the game above recent survival-crafting hits like Dune: Awakening and Enshrouded at their respective peaks.

Published in association with Pocketpair, the studio behind Palworld, Windrose launched into Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store earlier this month. The combination of a polished demo, a 1.5 million wishlist count going into release, and a strict PvE focus has turned what looked like a promising indie launch into one of the fastest-selling survival games of 2026.

Kraken Express Confirms The Million-Copy Milestone

The developer announced the news through a Steam community post and a follow-up message on the game’s official social channels. “Ahoy, captains! We have just plundered another milestone, 1,000,000 copies, and ‘we’ means ‘you,’ a crew of fine brave captains sailing the seas of Windrose,” the team wrote, adding that player support had been “absolutely astonishing.”

The post also confirmed Windrose hit over 200,000 concurrent players on the same day. Kraken Express thanked players for their patience while ongoing hotfixes are rolled out, noting the team has been actively reading reviews, watching streams, and pushing updates since launch.

From Steam Next Fest Breakout To One Million In Six Days

The trajectory leading up to release set the tone for the launch numbers. Windrose was the third most-played demo of February’s Steam Next Fest, attracting around one million players during the event. Wishlists climbed steadily after that, hitting 1.5 million ahead of the game’s release date.

The early sales pace tracks with that hype. Windrose passed 500,000 copies sold within 48 hours of launch and nearly 100,000 concurrent players in the same window. The jump from 500,000 to one million in the following four days, combined with the concurrent player count more than doubling, suggests the post-launch word of mouth has held up rather than fading after the initial rush.

How Windrose Compares To Other Recent Survival Hits

The Steam concurrent peak is where Windrose’s launch starts to look unusual. Most survival-crafting launches in the past 12 months have settled in the 100,000 to 150,000 range at peak, even when they go on to strong long-term sales. Windrose cleared that bar comfortably within its first week.

Palworld remains the genre outlier and is not really a fair comparison, but Windrose sitting above Dune: Awakening and Enshrouded on concurrent players is meaningful. Both of those games came in with much larger marketing budgets and established publisher backing.

Why The PvE-Only Direction Is Driving Sales

One of the more discussed elements of Windrose’s launch is the decision to keep the game purely PvE. There is no player-versus-player combat, even in the naval portion of the game where ship battles would normally invite competitive systems. That choice has resonated with survival-crafting fans who have grown tired of getting raided in games like Rust and Sea of Thieves, and several outlets have framed Windrose as a more cooperative alternative to those titles.

Players begin shipwrecked on an island, gather resources, build a base, and eventually unlock ships for solo or co-op naval expeditions. The progression loop borrows familiar pieces from Valheim and the PvE side of Dune: Awakening, but the pirate framing and the chaotic wildlife encounters give it a distinct identity.

The Boar Problem That Became A Marketing Win

Less seriously, the game’s early-game boars have become a community in-joke. Players have repeatedly flagged the creatures as unexpectedly difficult, sending characters flying into the nearest tree with a single hit. Kraken Express leaned into the bit, posting a graphic announcing that “the boar got a promotion” alongside the milestone announcement, and signing off with a line about the boar sending its “two-tusked regards” to the community.

It is a small thing, but the willingness to engage with player feedback in that tone has helped Windrose build goodwill quickly. The Steam review average is sitting at Very Positive with 89 percent of reviews recommending the game, despite some early complaints about co-op server stability in certain regions.

What Comes Next For Windrose

Kraken Express has said the full release will contain “around 50 percent more content” than the current Early Access build, with continued hotfixes addressing server issues and balance complaints in the meantime. The next major milestone to watch is whether concurrent player counts hold above 100,000 once the launch surge fades, which is typically where survival-crafting games either build a long-term community or settle into a much smaller base.

For now, Windrose has done what very few new IP survival games manage in their first week, and Pocketpair has another commercial hit on its publishing slate alongside Palworld.
