Song in the Smoke is available for Oculus Quest, but also for PSVR and PC platforms. This review is from the Quest 2 version.

Song in the Smoke is a prehistoric fantasy themed survival game, and developer 17-bits debut VR outing. It’s moody and atmospheric, takes some patience, and has a few of its own quirks for better or for worse.

Launching the game for the first time you’re greeted, rather startlingly, with a giant 3-headed, human-faced raven. Okay then – It’s clear at this point we’re in for a trippy experience.

The game starts out in a fairly linear fashion, designed initially to corral you through a series of rudimentary tutorials before loosening the rope and allowing you explore a little more freely.

What’s immediately striking about Song in the Smoke is its aesthetic style. Not quite the cel-shaded ubiquity of many VR titles, but more a distinctly limited colour palette sort’ve posterisation, as if it’s been run through a photoshop filter. This style likely economical for rendering, but also adds to the unsettlingly ‘other-worldy’ atmosphere the game is clearly pitching.

Despite this treatment though, it does feel like concessions have been made elsewhere due to the Quest 2’s hardware. Foliage is very lean and patchy, flat surfaces and hard edges are everywhere, and there’s a lingering haze that tends to silhouette geometry from near-distance. However, once the gameplay loop settles in, this becomes negligible and essentially accepted as character.

And the gameplay is actually, surprisingly good – but it takes some patience to get there.

Firstly – It may be reassuring to know that as a survival game, there is seldom a stone unturned here, if you excuse the pun. This is a survival game without compromise, and the interactivity that only VR can really provide is put to great use, enhancing the experience when engaging with its broad survival mechanics.

You’re first introduced to your ‘cloak’ inventory – and it’s clear that management of stock is going to be absolutely key due to the limited slots available.

There are plenty of rudimentary crafting resources scattered about; stones, branches, bones.

You can use a billet for shaping stones into knife blades, then attaching it to a bone handle. Now you have a whittling knife for shaping branches into arrows, torches or club handles.

All of this pre-prepping and combining resources is done using actions similar to those you’d use in real life.

Various tonics can be crafted from gathered berries using a mortar and pestle. Each berry type creates a tonic with distinct physiological properties, such as reducing fatigue or increasing vitality. Again, these tools are intuitively interactive, allowing you to first place the requisite tonic items into the mortar bowl, manually crushing with the pestle, then bringing the bowl up to your mouth to consume.

It’s impressively engineered, and from this survival game novice begs the question how survival games can be entertaining outside of VR with mere button presses.

Campfires also need to be crafted, and serve as both save and sleep spots. This is where I found my first issue.

You can only save at a campfire, and crafting a campfire requires scavenging for resources.

The resources aren’t hard to find, but if you move too far from an existing campfire and you haven’t crafted a new one – all progress in between will be lost. For me, this created some undue tension when it came to exploring as I was reluctant to wander too far, or do too much casual adventuring before returning to camp.

The day nigh cycle felt very short too, so the shorter jaunts initially makes the game feel small and very contained.

In the initial stages, this isn’t too bad as he game presents very little threat, only having to worry about eating, resting, and the elements. But as you progress further into areas where there are greater living threats, I found the catch 22 of being defenceless from predators while scavenging for weapon materials to protect myself from them frustrating.

At campfires you can build tanning and drying racks. These allow you to prep gathered resources from animals for clothing and weapon parts.

Admittedly. I’m not a veteran of the survival game and I initially found some tropes annoying, but soon found the rhythm the game was setting up.

The yo-yo-ing back and forth, having to clear inventory slots so I could store one more large branch felt like aimless busy work initially, but the game establishes a cadence before too long that allows you to manage and plan efficiently. Once it clicked, it became enjoyable – and the ‘while I’m here’ opportunities became a more thrilling part of the risk / reward tempo, with failure mostly coming down to poor judgement.

Song in the Smoke isn’t open world so much as it is a series of interconnected sandboxes you successively open up and move between.

Each area contains its own mysteries to discover and threats to face, but largely feels like extensions of the same environment. There isn’t an enormous amount of biodiversity to each area which is somewhat disappointing, but the elemental and creature variety in each section helped compensate.

New areas are unlocked by finding and collecting three purple stones scattered about the map, which provides some narrative purpose for latitudinal progress rather than just existing and enduring in the world.

Adequate clothing and weaponry become increasingly more vital in each area as you face creatures that will lay you to waste very quickly if under stocked. And you will on occasion be ill prepared, which can lead to frustrating altercations.

Some creatures demand a lot of arrows, or can survive full degradation of a melee weapon. So, on one hand you have to be sparing with your inventory, but you also need to be well equipped to deal with the unpredictable. If you get the balance wrong, back to base camp.

The HUD for survival indicators is clear but unobtrusive, which I appreciated. There’s nothing worse than a jarring firework of effects to indicate low health, or similarly instant death because you didn’t check your watch to see how hungry you were.

That’s not the case here. Clear animated icons pepper your field of view to indicate fatigue, cold, hunger, bleeding, or whether you’re hidden. This provided visual representation of instinct that would ordinarily not require visual cues, so worked as a diegetic compromise, and therefore helped with the immersion.

All in all, Song in the Smoke is a fully featured and satisfying survival experience, despite having no real contemporary on the Quest platform.

With some patience and perhaps some knowledge of the genre, there is a surprising amount to enjoy here.

This is primary question in Fast Travel Games’ new VR title for Oculus (aswell as HTC Vive) as you play through this dark fright fest with the aim of solving your own murder.

Your are Ed Miller who took part in a séance that went horribly wrong.

The game plays out within the walls of an expansive Barclay Mansion and as a wraith you will use your new found powers to uncover truth behind the evil that dwells within its walls.

Nuggets of information are found by exploring around, memories, and these give you clues not only on where to head to or what to do next but begin to answer some of the questions you’ll need to find out what happened.

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is played out in first person.

The console quality game is a visual feast with near next-gen graphics in some cases.

There are pick ups and items in almost every room, every corner. Some required within the gameplay but I do recommend that you check every dark corner, every room for hidden goodness.

But if you are peeking in to the shadows for collectables, be careful… Spectres maybe hiding and waiting for you.

The developers opted for true horror in Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife. None of those cheap jump scares (that said – it doesn’t mean that you wont get a jump here and there), this title is more suspenseful, sinister and creepy than it is a quick shot of adrenaline.

A mixed pace of play, Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife tends to deliver the story slowly in order to deliver a dark and compelling VR game.

Best played with headphones too. While the Oculus does have surprisingly excellent sound built-in given the type of game this is a high quality headset heightens the experience.

If you’re a horror game fan then Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife is the best title out there right now for VR.

The all-in-one VR unit that untethers you from a wired virtual gaming experience.

Oculus Quest 2 is the second version of their Quest series – and the goods inside have been ramped up significantly.

Clarity and visuals have been upgraded whereby there are now 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye.

Now built with 6GB RAM and a Snapdragon XR2 processor streaming or gaming directly from the headset is flawless, fast and furious.

There are two size flavours; 64GB and 256GB. This review is for the 64GB.

The Oculus Quest 2 comes with a left and right hand controller with trigger and pad buttons excellently placed so you can play on without needing to fiddle about the controller for the correct action click.

The controllers as with the visor are all totally wireless.

The Oculus Quest 2 has a wealth of sensors built-in so it knows your surroundings and if you place the controllers down it detects it, or the headset itself – which will go into sleep mode instantly so you can pick up and play from where you left off.

There are even low-res outer cameras on the visor for safety first. Before you play with the headset on you will need to scan your surroundings and with any of the controllers you’ll be tasked with setting up a play boundary so you don’t knock yourself into a real world obstacle.

The sensors will warn you during gameplay or media streaming that you are moving out of your safety zone.

VR gaming is where it’s at though, and obviously the only reason you would get yourself one of these.

On the Oculus Store there is a huge selection with varied genres, some premium console quality.

Facebook provided STG with a unit and a selection of titles to get in to.

Moss is a favourite of mine on PSVR – so was real pleased to see that this had been ported to Oculus.

An adventure game where you play guide Quill, a mouse on a quest to rescue his Uncle from an evil snake. You are the reader, like a God to Quill and through both first and third person view you will help Quill to get through various lush and excruciatingly detailed levels and tricky puzzles.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is another epic console quality title.

Taken from the TV series, Saints and Sinners is a horror / action played in first person where you decide the gameplay narrative and ultimately decisions for the other survivors as you take out the undead. Dark, gritty and an element of exploration throughout a ravaged New Orleans, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is one the ultimate must have’s for Oculus Quest 2.

Pistol Whip is a bullet filled hell.. lot of fun.

Bright and coloured environments with a killer soundtrack, shoot, whip and keep the rhythm as you go.

Population 1 is likened to Fortnite or any similar ‘Battle Royale’ title and is as close as you’ll get to in VR to one of these games. Via a vertical combat system you From flying through the map, climb and clamber over almost anything while running and gunning this title is as immersive and addictive as any console or PC ‘Royale’.

Sports Scramble was a weird one. In short is mashes up common sports games, like tennis, golf, Basketball, Bowling and more where you use the equipment from one sports game in another. Example, awkwardly playing tennis with a golf club.

Some games in Sports Scramble were easier to play than others and is a good time killer title – that I’m not likely to return to.

Saving the best for last is Beat Sabre.

You, a neon lit VR environment and light sabres.

Smash it out with the beat and score. A simple concept that works well (and most likely gives you a workout) using the controllers as your light sabre smashing through beat blocks.

A hit on Steam VR and PSVR Beat Sabre is a game you have difficulty in putting down.

There are a few ways to kit out your Oculus Quest 2 with games.

From the unit itself you can go direct to the Oculus store try out demos, watch game trailers and buy. The game will download to the headset instantly.

Or you can use the Oculus app on your smartdevice which will sync up to your Oculus Quest 2. Buying a game or grabbing a game demo will enact your headset to download it and install.

Lastly, via PC and the Oculus store – which again will auto download anything you grab on to the VR unit.

Oculus Quest 2 can also be synced up to Steam on your PC to stream any VR games you may have.

For me this worked well, with no nasty lag – the experience will differ though depending on the capabilities of your wireless router and signal strength.

Everything has been made super simple to get you VR gaming either from Oculus games to VR steam games so there’s no fussing about. It all just works.

You can expect up to 3 hours of non-stop VR gaming one one full charge of the Oculus Quest 2. Rechargeable via a supplied USB-C cable. The controllers are powered by one AA battery per control.

This is how VR is meant to be. A light to wear headset with extraordinary built-in audio, fully responsive gamer designed controllers and of course no wires. None.

If you’re a VR fan or just keen to jump into the worlds that await you Oculus Quest 2 is absolutely the virtual reality unit you need to own.

Respawn Entertainment, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. and Oculus from Facebook announced during Facebook Connect that the highly-anticipated upcoming Virtual Reality (VR) title, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will release on December 11, 2020, worldwide.

This new innovative and immersive title blends films and games into one, and will be available on the Oculus Store for Oculus Rift and Steam with OpenVR support and cross-platform play.

“The Medal of Honor franchise has always been a powerful series that tells the untold stories of war heroes, and from the beginning of this series in 1999, our goal has been to create grounded and emotionally authentic games that are true to the experiences of people that fought and lived through it,” said Peter Hirschmann, Director, Respawn Entertainment. “We’re honored to share these moving first-hand stories from survivors and veterans of WWII and deliver an immersive VR gameplay experience that provides high-flying action and emotional, intimate storytelling in equal measure.”

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond returns to the series’ roots, transporting players to a boots-on-the-ground World War II setting that spans the earth, sea and sky, with players jumping from planes, skiing down mountainsides and sabotaging Nazi bases. Aspiring soldiers won’t be going it alone, however: a veteran sergeant and young British medic will serve as companions throughout the single-player campaign, and the game will feature appearances from other Medal of Honor legends, including M anon Batiste and Dr. Gronek.

The single player campaign also aims to tell one of the most immersive World War II stories yet in a robust and emotionally-driven first-person experience. The team at Respawn has spent the past four years and hundreds of hours interviewing veterans of the war, and travelled to the places where history happened, in order to get the emotional tone of the game right. The team also captured more than 120 pages of stunning performance capture – an entire movie’s worth of narrative performance – to supplement the moving tale of heroism and sacrifice.

Additionally, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will feature a variety of multiplayer modes, some of which are only possible in VR and with the addition of Steam support, players will benefit from cross-platform play across multiple different devices. Facebook via Facebook Connect has announced Oculus Quest 2 – the next generation of all-in-one VR. It has their highest resolution display ever, weighs less than the original Quest and starts at just $299 USD.

It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor and 6GB of memory to power even more immersive experiences, with newly redesigned controllers for better ergonomics and longer battery life.

Their official blog discusses new Quest content, Oculus Move (a new fitness experience), Messenger integration with the Quest Platform, new OculusAvatars, Oculus Business and Infinite Office, a collection of new capabilities designed to create a virtual office space that will feel more productive and flexible.

They also announced a multi-year partnership with EssilorLuxottica — the makers of eyewear from Oakley and Ray-Ban to Armani, Versace, and more.

Together, they’ll build and release a pair of Ray-Ban branded smart glasses in 2021. They’ll be designed to capture the best of both worlds – innovative technology and fashion-forward style and help people better connect with friends and family.

Additionally Oculus are making strides in augmented reality via their Spark AR platform, expanding the opportunity for expression and bringing people new experiences on a daily basis. Every month, more than 600 million people use AR across Facebook and Instagram.

More than 400,000 creators from over 190 countries have published Spark AR effects for Facebook and Instagram, the majority of whom, 55%, are women. Together, they’ve published over 1.2 million AR effects to date. In just the last three months, more than 150 effect owners have hit over 1 billion views and uses. Kluge Interactive is very excited to announce that their VR rhythm hit Synth Riders has expanded its song library with an all new Electro Swing Essentials DLC pack featuring Parov Stelar, now available on Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets.

The Electro Swing Essentials pack is a spicy cocktail of vintage jazz swing, EDM, House and Hip Hop. The pack features ten songs, five paid and five free, from some of Electro Swing’s biggest names such as Parov Stelar, Jamie Berry, Swingrowers and more. The developer has also prepared a brand new, thematic stage to let the players dance and jive in a stunning swing setting.

Along with the music pack, Synth Riders has also received quite a few new features and improvements. New players can enjoy smoother onboarding thanks to a playable tutorial, and those wishing to take their synth riding skills to the next level can improve in the brand new Practice Mode that lets you repeat any section of a song in slow motion.

New Orleans is the setting for The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, a VR game based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman.

Similar to Telltale’s Walking Dead games, Saints and Sinners is not a tie-in with The Walking Dead TV show. This is probably fortunate, as The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, the 2013 game based on the TV show was not very well received.

Played via Valve’s SteamVR platform, Saints and Sinners is compatible with the Value Index, HTC Vive, Oculus rift and Window Mixed Reality VR platforms. I tested the game using HTC’s original Vive and the new Vive Cosmos, both without technical issues.

At the start, the game drops the player, referred to as “The Tourist” into a New Orleans cemetery, at night, without any weapons. The distant moans suggest that you are not alone.

Virtual reality is no stranger to zombie games. The likes of The Brookhaven Experiment and Arizona Sunshine have been terrorizing players in VR since the beginning. But this is The Walking Dead and reaching for your sidearm is all well and good, but the gunshots are likely to bring more walkers (zombies) to bear down on you.

Very early on in the game you get to realized that stealth and melee is the way to go. The game allows players to sneak up on an undead and grab its head with one hand, whilst plunging a screwdriver or other weapon into its temple with the other.

Rather grossly, the implement does get a little stuck and needs a bit of a shake to get out. The walkers ragdoll nicely on the end of your motion controllers, avoiding the feeling that you just passed your hand though their bodies (a la Skyrim VR).

The game is really designed as a seated experience, which I have no problem with. But players can also stand. I was very mindful that the game disables the SteamVR chaperone, which is potentially dangerous if you are swinging your arms about. It made me hesitant to reach out to attack walkers in case I hit my desk (my chair is on rollers, and I find I do move about). I also managed to tie myself up with the Vive’s cable.

The game comes with the usual comfort setting which can be adjusted depending on your sensitivity to VR sickness. I had no problems setting the game for smooth motion and turning, but it very much depends on your VR legs.

Dealing with the odd walker does make you feel like a superhero as take them out one by one, its only when confronted by a few too many than thing start to get dicey. In VR, being surrounded by walkers is pretty scary. You can tell yourself it’s just a game as much as you like, fumbling for your pistol as walking corpses stumble towards you feels oh so very real.

The game makes full use of player movements to grab your backpack or rifle from over your shoulder, sidearm from your holster and torch from your chest. All very immersive, but a bit clumsy if you find yourself surrounded, dropping your gun and having to reach for your backpack to get out your shiv. You also, sometimes have to climb, hand over-hand, so watch out if you have a ceiling fan! Personally, like Doom VFR and Skyrim VR, I’d have liked a gamepad option to enable me to enjoy the VR environment without having to wave my arms about.

The game is fairly linear, with a main story questline plus additional tasks obtained from NPCs. As you progress you come across human factions that, like in the comic book, become more of a danger than the walkers.

If you die, you go back to the last checkpoint, but with your kit left where you were killed. I wasn’t a fan of this gameplay element, giving the game an unnecessary bit of difficulty that I sometimes found a chore, especially if I lost everything among a horde of walkers.

The graphics offer a first-class VR experience. This is a full game and not a shooting gallery. Whilst not entirely photo-real, characters still look a bit cartoony, it looks real enough. New Orleans looks great and the silhouettes of shambling walkers milling about in the shadows, suitably chilling.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is a premium VR title that offers players a full-length VR gaming experience. It is designed with long play-sessions in mind, which may be too much for some. But it is a good game and moves VR in the direction that it should be going, away from short “VR experiences”. The game is certainly the best zombie VR title available right now, and possibly one of the best first-person VR games full-stop.

Vertigo Games, the videogame studio behind the hit VR shooter Arizona Sunshine, has announced After the Fall, an epic multiplayer VR action FPS that will bring players into a vast, hostile world with seamless co-op gameplay at its core.

Space Ops VR’s scenarios can be played solo or cooperatively in score-based PvP mode that features leaderboards and a skill-based matchmaking system.

The release date trailer (above) showcases Space Ops VR’s expansive arsenal as well as the tactics you’ll employ against the hostile creatures you train against. Unique to the game is a special tactical teleportation system that combines teleportation and a dodge maneuver to help you get a leg up on your foes, but misuse can also put you at a disadvantage.

Players will be able to join the Space Ops and participate in their challenging training regimen on May 30th, 2019. The game will distribute through Steam and is playable across a variety of headset and controllers including the Vive, Oculus, and Windows Mixed Reality VR systems.
