‘Into The Gap’, initially released in February 1984, was the fourth album by Thompson Twins.

It was a multi-platinum album on both sides of the Atlantic, staying at number one in the UK for three weeks and being top ten in the US. The album produced four massive hit singles: ‘Hold Me Now’, a top-five smash in the UK and the US, ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘You Take Me Up’, and ‘Sister Of Mercy’.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ‘Into The Gap’, the album has been remastered at Abbey Road by Frank Arkwright and will be reissued as a comprehensive 3-CD set featuring new sleevenotes with interviews with all three band members, a limited edition red vinyl LP, a digital deluxe version and Dolby Atmos digital and Bluray. David Kosten mixed the Dolby Atmos version.

In the 40 years since their commercial peak, Thompson Twins have finally been recognised as quiet visionaries. The band was multi-gender and multiracial, taking on Middle Eastern and Jamaican influences and melding them with cutting-edge technology alongside producer Alex Sadkin (Grace Jones, Robert Palmer, Bob Marley And The Wailers) at the famous Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas.

After an early seven-piece version of the band dissolved, the remaining threesome, Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway, recorded the groundbreaking ‘Quick Step & Side Kick’ album, which broke the top 40 in the US and reached number 2 in the UK. Remarking on the time Tom Bailey remembers “We were no longer a band, Instead, we were designers of pop music. We divided ourselves so that Alannah wrote our lyrics, I wrote our music and Joe, who had come from the theatre, was in charge of our live side, working with Alannah on how we presented ourselves visually.”

The shift to a trio also meant a change in sound, looking back Alannah says ‘The whole reason we were able to make those tracks was because we discovered the synthesiser and drum machine so suddenly we were able to make big sounding records with only three of us in the studio. Marrying traditional instruments and percussion with big synth sounds to get the human warmth with cool machines was what we aimed for. We were constantly accused of it not being ‘real music’, especially in America, because we rejected the who concept of rock and roll and guitars in favour of synthesisers and percussion.”

Tom notes that Alannah’s lyrics were key in making the music resonate “Alannah writing the lyrics was a gift for making our music universal. The words had to mean something to me, but they also had to mean something to the person you don’t know who’s dancing on a Saturday night. Alannah’s lyrics fitted how she was thinking and how I performed. I was able to fully inhabit her ideas.” Joe Leeway also recognises Alannah’s trailblazing spirit “Things are done differently now. All the way up to Doja Cat, women have their own audiences and their own authority. Generations now don’t remember how different it was. I learned a lot from Alannah, who brought a lot about respect for women in a male-dominated world. Alannah writing our lyrics was part of that.”

Once the album was completed, Thompson Twins took to the road In support of the album. The band toured the US extensively, playing their own shows and massive stadiums in support of The Police. All of the trio’s hard work paid off in the USA in 1984 when ‘Into The Gap’ entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #10, and the band, including two future members of The Cure, played a 50-date tour, including sold-out shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

There would be further highs in the band’s career, including having Madonna and Nile Rodgers perform with them at Live Aid and the underrated ‘Here’s To Future Days’ album, but ‘Into The Gap’ was the moment that Thompson Twins captured the Zeitgeist on two continents. It was a very long way from the squat in Clapham, London, where the band had formed just seven years earlier. To bring the album full circle, Tom Bailey has recently toured the world playing the album in full to rapturous audiences eager to hear these classic songs live once more.

Kiwi rock band Shihad are today celebrating the 20th anniversary of their iconic record PACIFIER.

To mark the occasion and to fan’s delight, Shihad have announced the pre-order of the first ever vinyl release of the record, set for February 17th, 2023.

At the time of its release in 2002 – and prior to their name change – the band were known as Pacifier and their self-titled album was quick to gain huge success and hit #1.
At the time singles ‘Comfort Me’, ‘Run’ and ‘Bullitproof’ from the album went on to be hit singles nationwide, with ‘Bullitproof’ peaking at #27 on the global Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and #37 on the global Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

In everything he did, John Lennon spoke his truth and questioned the truth. An incomparable and uncompromising artist who strove for honesty and directness in his music, he laid bare his heart, mind and soul in his songs, seeing them as snapshots of his current emotions, thoughts and world view.

Believing the one quality demanded of himself as an artist was to be completely honest, he did not disguise what he had to say or conform his messages to be more in line with what he felt others thought they should be. Love, heartbreak, peace, politics, truth, lies, the media, racism, feminism, religion, mental well-being, marriage, fatherhood – he sang about it all, and one just needs to listen to the songs of John Lennon to know how he felt, what he cherished, what he believed in, and what he stood for.

On October the 9th, 2020, Lennon’s 80th birthday, in celebration of his remarkable life, a collection of some of the most vital and best loved songs from his solo career will be released via Capitol / UMe as a suite of beautifully presented collections, titled GIMME SOME TRUTH. THE ULTIMATE MIXES.

Executive Produced by Yoko Ono Lennon and Produced by Sean Ono Lennon, these thirty-six songs, handpicked by Yoko and Sean, have all been completely remixed from scratch, radically upgrading their sonic quality and presenting them as a never-before-heard Ultimate Listening Experience.

Mixed and engineered by multi GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Paul Hicks, who also helmed the mixes for 2018’s universally acclaimed Imagine – The Ultimate Collection series, with assistance by engineer Sam Gannon who also worked on that release, the songs were completely remixed from scratch, using brand new transfers of the original multi-tracks, cleaned up to the highest possible sonic quality. After weeks of painstaking preparation, the final mixes and effects were completed using only vintage analog equipment and effects at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, and then mastered in analog at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Wharton in order to ensure the most beautiful and authentic sound quality possible.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. – named for Lennon’s 1971 excoriating rebuke of deceptive politicians, hypocrisy and war, a sentiment as relevant as ever in our post-truth era of fake news, will be available in a variety of formats including as a Deluxe Edition Box Set that offers several different ways to listen to this engrossing 36-track collection with stunning new mixes across two CDs alongside a Blu-ray audio disc containing the Ultimate Mixes in Studio Quality 24 bit / 96 kHz HD Stereo, immersive 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos.

“John was a brilliant man with a great sense of humour and understanding,” writes Yoko Ono Lennon in the preface of the book included in the Deluxe Edition. “He believed in being truthful and that the power of the people will change the world. And it will. All of us have the responsibility to visualize a better world for ourselves and our children. The truth is what we create. It’s in our hands.”

The 124-page book included in the Deluxe Edition has been designed and edited by Simon Hilton, the Compilation Producer and Production Manager of the Ultimate Collection series. The book tells the story of all thirty-six songs in John & Yoko’s words and the words of those who worked alongside them, through archival and brand-new interviews, accompanied by hundreds of previously unseen photographs, Polaroids, movie still frames, letters, lyric sheets, tape boxes, artworks and memorabilia from the Lennon-Ono archives.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. will also be released as a 19-track CD or 2LP, a 36-track 2CD or 4 LP, and several digital versions for download and streaming including in 24 bit/96 kHz audio and hi-res Dolby Atmos. The vinyl was cut by mastering engineer Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios. The Deluxe Edition and 4LP formats will include a GIMME SOME TRUTH. bumper sticker, a two-sided poster of Lennon printed in black and white with silver and gold metallics, and two postcards, one of which is a replica of Lennon’s letter to the Queen of England in 1969 when he returned his MBE in “protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigerian-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and Cold Turkey slipping down the charts.”

The 2LP and 2CD will also include the poster and all versions will come with a booklet filled with photos and the MBE letter.

The album cover features a rarely-seen striking black and white profile portrait of John Lennon, taken on the day John returned his MBE. The album cover, CD and LP booklets and typographic artworks were designed by Jonathan Barnbrook who created the covers for David Bowie’s albums Heathen, Reality and The Next Day and won a GRAMMY Award for the packaging of Bowie’s Black Star album.

GIMME SOME TRUTH. traces the arc of Lennon’s post-Beatles life and career, bringing together songs from all of his revered solo albums including John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), Some Time In New York City (1972), Mind Games (1973), Walls and Bridges (1974), Rock ‘n’ Roll (1975), Double Fantasy (1980) and 1984’s posthumous Milk and Honey. The collection is bookended with his early non-album singles, kicking off with the one-two punch of “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On),” Lennon’s exuberant exhortation about the karmic forces of action/reaction and equality (“we all shine on like the moon and the stars and the sun”), and the electrifying addiction-themed “Cold Turkey,” and culminating with the holiday classic “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and the anti-war protest anthem “Give Peace A Chance,” with its ubiquitous, titular call to action: “All we are saying is Give Peace A Chance.”

Sequenced in chronological order by album they were released on, songs on the 36-track version include all of Lennon’s biggest hits and showcase his thoughts, beliefs and convictions about everything from peace (“Imagine,” “Give Peace A Chance,” “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”), religion (“God”), politics (“Power To The People,” “Working Class Hero”), lying politicians (“Gimme Some Truth”), racism (“Angela”), equality (“Woman”), love and marriage (“Love,” “Oh Yoko!,” “Dear Yoko,” “Mind Games,” “Out The Blue,” “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him,” “Grow Old With Me”), fatherhood (“Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)”), loneliness (“Isolation”) and much more. Some of the many other highlights include the sonically sumptuous “Jealous Guy” and “#9 Dream,” the acerbic “How Do You Sleep?,” the breezy, carefree “Watching The Wheels,” a rollicking live recording of “Come Together” that he had originally recorded with The Beatles, the rapturous Elton John collaboration “Whatever Gets You Thru The Night,” and the jubilant, bittersweet “I’m Stepping Out.”

Like all Lennon projects, intense thought and care went into the making of GIMME SOME TRUTH and the remixing of these treasured songs. Laced Records once again teams up with Gearbox Software and 2K Games to bring the original soundtrack to the definitive looter-shooter, Borderlands, to vinyl.

The 2009 smash hit Borderlands blended first-person shooting with role-playing elements, fused single-player with multiplayer experiences, provided bazillions of guns to be looted, and told a comedic action-packed story through a radical hand-drawn art style. It also kept fans coming back with an extensive slate of DLC that consistently expanded the world and characters.

The richly talented composition team brought several different flavours to the game. Legendary composer Jesper Kyd (Assassin’s Creed, Hitman) set the tone with dirty, dusty, percussion-heavy musical soundscapes flecked with Wild West guitars. Duo Sascha Dikiciyan & Cris Velasco (with credits including Quake 2 & 3, Unreal Tournament, Mass Effect 3, God of War 3, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided) brought the filth and the danger to battle cues. Borderlands series stalwart Raison Varner contributed outlandish battle tracks and, alongside Tim Larkin (DOTA 2, Artifact), saw to some of the more atmospheric and ambient pieces.

Thirty tracks from the original soundtrack, including bonus tracks not before released on physical formats, have been specially remastered for vinyl and will be pressed onto 180g LPs. These will be housed in a wide spined gatefold sleeve.

Sleeve artwork was produced in collaboration with Gearbox Software’s Borderlands art team.

The Borderlands (Original Soundtrack) double LP is available as a Limited Edition with pink discs, exclusive to the Laced Records store. Also available is the Standard Edition with traditional black discs.

As a kid I grew up listening to my elder brother and parents vinyls and now, as an adult I have more of an appreciation for the nostalgic hiss and clicks that only an LP can provide.

ION are bringing back that magic with their range of turntables, from basic plug and play through to the more professional level units, such as this one, the ION Pro 500BT.

From the box there’s a fair bit of assembly required.

Thankfully ION provide an info-graphic with detailed instructions to place the ION Pro 500BT together.

From adding the motor belt, the counter weight to the arm and the needle – it’s a construction of ease and satisfaction.

The ION Pro 500BT is not just a record player – it’s the ultimate analogue turntable with both USB and bluetooth builtin.

Once assembled your connection options to start blasting your vinyl collection are RCA to an amp or the mentioned bluetooth.

Simple RCA connection works well – sure it is not the same audio experience that you will get from wireless streaming or HDMI – but it’s not meant to be.

The ION Pro 500BT has a few onboard dials that you’ll need to get grips with too.

Start and stop is for the turntable motor. Always make sure you stop the motor before removing the needle arm to change out or change the side of your LP.

You can plug a 3.5mm connecting headset directly in to your ION Pro 500BT and this has it’s own separate volume dial.

As records are not always full sized (remember 45’s?) the ION Pro 500BT has a switcher knob for this too on it’s wood grain base.

ION have also included USB connectivity. You will need to download software – but once you have this installed plug the ION Pro 500BT in to your PC and on Windows 10, in my test, will recognise it immediately.

The idea of USB plug and play is to enable you to convert your vinyls in to MP3s.

Dusting off some older LPs that I have I gave this a go and while each LP conversion does take a while (it of course needs to play the LP through each track) it sure does convert to digital.

Bluetooth connectivity is another matter.

It’s hit and miss – mostly miss.

To connect via bluetooth the ION Pro 500BT needs to be in pairing mode. This part is easy enough as there is a tactile bluetooth button on the front of the unit.

However – it’s a blind pairing. The ION will connect to the nearest bluetooth speaker that is also in pairing mode – or at least broadcasting out and is visible.

I tried connecting to a Konka Tower bluetooth speaker – but to no avail, even though the Konka speaker was in pairing mode and most definitely visible.

The Alexa Studio fared the same – in pairing and visible but still the ION snubbed it.

Eventually I did manage to get the ION to connect to a UE Boom – and remarkably after so many failures with other devices, it connected immediately.

The bluetooth connectivity on the ION Pro 500BT is a nice to have – but my preference is to amalgamate the unit in to my home entertainment and keep it connected to an amp.

The ION Pro 500BT is a beautiful looking turntable with retro aesthetics combined with current technology.

If you’re looking to get back in to the magic of LPs I fully recommend the option rich ION Pro 500BT. This said, if you’re not a tinkerer and want something that ‘just works’ from the box this one wont be for you and you’ll need a more simpler turntable.

Paul McCartney proudly announces the thirteenth installment in his GRAMMY Award-winning Archive Collection: On July 31, 2020 Paul’s critically acclaimed and universally beloved tenth solo album Flaming Pie will be the latest to receive the Archive Collection treatment, being released  locally on formats including the 2LP, Deluxe LP and Box Set.

All digital pre-orders for the Archive Collection release of Flaming Pie will include ‘Young Boy’. Also available as a stand-alone for digital download & streaming, the EP recreates the 1997 ‘Young Boy’ maxi single and features the remastered Flaming Pie single ‘Young Boy,’ a home-recorded version of the song, the original B-side ‘Looking For You,’ and excerpts of ‘Oobu Joobu Part 1,’ also from the original single. So in a way it was a refresher course that set the framework for this album.” Produced by Paul, Jeff Lynne and George Martin and featuring a supporting cast of family and friends including Ringo Starr, Steve Miller, Linda McCartney and son James, Flaming Pie is equal parts a masterclass in song craft and a sustained burst of joyful spontaneity.

Gear up, as Gears of War comes to vinyl for the first time ever. Laced Records has partnered with The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios to bring the magnificent Gears 5 soundtrack to vinyl.

Across 18 tracks, Game of Thrones and Iron Man composer Ramin Djawadi deftly blends a heavyweight Hollywood sound with impassioned melodies, bringing to life Kait’s journey across the icy wastes and dusty deserts of Gears 5. The soundtrack features a varied mixture of orchestral textures, huge-sounding percussion, and atmospheric electronic sounds.

Specially remastered for vinyl, the Gears 5 OST will be pressed to 180g heavyweight vinyl; the Standard Edition will feature traditional black discs, while the Limited Edition, exclusive to the Laced Records store, features transparent red and transparent orange discs. Both editions sport a deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring striking original artwork by UK based designer, Luke Preece.

Gears 5 enjoyed critical acclaim and incredible fan response in its release September 2019 with Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC, for purchase on the Microsoft Store, named “The total package” (IGN).The game’s emotional campaign features gut-wrenching twists and turns as Kait Diaz looks to uncover her connection to the enemy and discover the true danger to Sera – herself. This is the biggest Gears campaign ever and the first to feature three-player split-screen campaign co-op.
