HTC VIVE continues to push the boundaries of innovation by unveiling its new consumer flagship all-in-one, VIVE XR Elite.

The headset combines Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) capabilities into one compact, lightweight, powerful and highly versatile device – perfect for gaming, fitness, productivity and more.

Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing (LWAVR), the VR racing game from UNIVRS, Inc. based on the famous anime, takes off on Oculus Quest in late 2020 then PSVR, Oculus Rift and SteamVR with support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in early 2021.

Directed by Junichi Yamamoto, whose past positions include opening and ending movie director on The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and storyboard artist of Batman Ninja, LWAVR puts fans in the shoes of a new student at Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy.

Learn to soar with the help and encouragement of fan-favorite characters from the popular anime while UNIVRS, Inc.’s motion sickness reduction technology keeps the focus on the exhilaration of flying.

Become part of an all new story told across more than 10 tracks spread throughout familiar areas around Luna Nova. Pair up with fellow students to be the first to cross the finish line or purify ghosts in single player mode, then join real-world friends via online multiplayer to explore the rich environments of Little Witch Academia in immersive VR.

Little Witch Academia is a Japanese anime series produced by Studio TRIGGER, one of the leading animation studios founded by the creators behind legendary shows such as Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series consists of two short films, the second of which found huge success on Kickstarter with $625,518 raised from 7,938 backers, and a 25-episode TV series currently available on Netflix.

Successfully funded on Kickstarter and Campfire, a Japanese popular crowdfunding platform, LWAVR raised over $165,000 USD in total between the two campaigns in July 2019. It was originally scheduled for release in June 2020, but adopting protective measures against COVID-19 has resulted in a change in plans.

LWAVR will be available on Oculus Quest in late 2020 while PSVR, Oculus Rift, and SteamVR versions will follow in early 2021. It will feature voice acting in English and Japanese from the talents who star in the anime.

New Orleans is the setting for The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, a VR game based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman.

Similar to Telltale’s Walking Dead games, Saints and Sinners is not a tie-in with The Walking Dead TV show. This is probably fortunate, as The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, the 2013 game based on the TV show was not very well received.

Played via Valve’s SteamVR platform, Saints and Sinners is compatible with the Value Index, HTC Vive, Oculus rift and Window Mixed Reality VR platforms. I tested the game using HTC’s original Vive and the new Vive Cosmos, both without technical issues.

At the start, the game drops the player, referred to as “The Tourist” into a New Orleans cemetery, at night, without any weapons. The distant moans suggest that you are not alone.

Virtual reality is no stranger to zombie games. The likes of The Brookhaven Experiment and Arizona Sunshine have been terrorizing players in VR since the beginning. But this is The Walking Dead and reaching for your sidearm is all well and good, but the gunshots are likely to bring more walkers (zombies) to bear down on you.

Very early on in the game you get to realized that stealth and melee is the way to go. The game allows players to sneak up on an undead and grab its head with one hand, whilst plunging a screwdriver or other weapon into its temple with the other.

Rather grossly, the implement does get a little stuck and needs a bit of a shake to get out. The walkers ragdoll nicely on the end of your motion controllers, avoiding the feeling that you just passed your hand though their bodies (a la Skyrim VR).

The game is really designed as a seated experience, which I have no problem with. But players can also stand. I was very mindful that the game disables the SteamVR chaperone, which is potentially dangerous if you are swinging your arms about. It made me hesitant to reach out to attack walkers in case I hit my desk (my chair is on rollers, and I find I do move about). I also managed to tie myself up with the Vive’s cable.

The game comes with the usual comfort setting which can be adjusted depending on your sensitivity to VR sickness. I had no problems setting the game for smooth motion and turning, but it very much depends on your VR legs.

Dealing with the odd walker does make you feel like a superhero as take them out one by one, its only when confronted by a few too many than thing start to get dicey. In VR, being surrounded by walkers is pretty scary. You can tell yourself it’s just a game as much as you like, fumbling for your pistol as walking corpses stumble towards you feels oh so very real.

The game makes full use of player movements to grab your backpack or rifle from over your shoulder, sidearm from your holster and torch from your chest. All very immersive, but a bit clumsy if you find yourself surrounded, dropping your gun and having to reach for your backpack to get out your shiv. You also, sometimes have to climb, hand over-hand, so watch out if you have a ceiling fan! Personally, like Doom VFR and Skyrim VR, I’d have liked a gamepad option to enable me to enjoy the VR environment without having to wave my arms about.

The game is fairly linear, with a main story questline plus additional tasks obtained from NPCs. As you progress you come across human factions that, like in the comic book, become more of a danger than the walkers.

If you die, you go back to the last checkpoint, but with your kit left where you were killed. I wasn’t a fan of this gameplay element, giving the game an unnecessary bit of difficulty that I sometimes found a chore, especially if I lost everything among a horde of walkers.

The graphics offer a first-class VR experience. This is a full game and not a shooting gallery. Whilst not entirely photo-real, characters still look a bit cartoony, it looks real enough. New Orleans looks great and the silhouettes of shambling walkers milling about in the shadows, suitably chilling.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is a premium VR title that offers players a full-length VR gaming experience. It is designed with long play-sessions in mind, which may be too much for some. But it is a good game and moves VR in the direction that it should be going, away from short “VR experiences”. The game is certainly the best zombie VR title available right now, and possibly one of the best first-person VR games full-stop.

International VR publisher and developer FIBRUM have announced today the release date for their virtual reality cooperative shooter, Space Ops VR.

Space Ops VR puts you in the shoes of an enlistee of the Space Ops, an elite corps of first responders that guard perilous deep-space expeditions. To keep themselves sharp, the Space Ops practice in cutting-edge simulations and compete to be the most efficient soldiers this side of the galaxy. Space Ops VR’s scenarios can be played solo or cooperatively in score-based PvP mode that features leaderboards and a skill-based matchmaking system.

The release date trailer (above) showcases Space Ops VR’s expansive arsenal as well as the tactics you’ll employ against the hostile creatures you train against. Unique to the game is a special tactical teleportation system that combines teleportation and a dodge maneuver to help you get a leg up on your foes, but misuse can also put you at a disadvantage.

Players will be able to join the Space Ops and participate in their challenging training regimen on May 30th, 2019. The game will distribute through Steam and is playable across a variety of headset and controllers including the Vive, Oculus, and Windows Mixed Reality VR systems.

Finnish videogame developer Catland has released the virtual reality version of beloved spy comedy game The Spy Who Shrunk Me VR and announces new sequel to fan-favorite Taphouse series Taphouse 2: The Taphousening for PC & VR.

Catland, an indie team of six from Tampere, Finland today announced to us here at STG the immediate availability of The Spy Who Shrunk Me VR, the virtual reality edition of The Spy Who Shrunk Me.

Step into the high heels of Audrey Smoothspy, legendary superspy armed with a shrink ray and banana peels to save the world from the Soviet menace! It is 1981 and a sinister plot hidden inside a Moscow software house is about to turn the Cold War red hot. Today, Ubisoft announced that Space Junkies, a jetpack-fueled arcade shooter developed exclusively for virtual reality gaming, will be available March 26th, 2019 on PlayStation VR, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, Oculus Rift + Touch and HTC Vive.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and powered by Brigitte, a new proprietary virtual reality engine designed to allow teams to work seamlessly in virtual spaces and adapt to VR pre-production and production, Space Junkies offers a fast-paced multiplayer action experience set in three-dimensional space arenas and leverages full VR embodiment to immerse players in intense microgravity battles.

The PlayStation VR version of Space Junkies will support the DUALSHOCK 4 controller, and feature a unique navigation system that allows players to fly at speeds through immersive vertical battlespaces. Players will also have full use of the SIXAXIS controls for unique embodiment in VR.

At launch, Space Junkies will offer 1v1, 2v2 and free-for-all modes, as well as a wealth of different weapon and customisation options across six varied interior and exterior battlefields. Each arena features unique tactical zones, dynamic lighting and breakable environments. No battle will feel the same, and players will need their wits and combat skills to avoid death coming fast from all directions. Additionally, the game will receive new content updates beyond release, including new modes, maps, weapons and customization items.

HTC VIVE and McLaren Racing have announced the release of a special edition VIVE Pro McLaren Limited Edition headset, the first co-created product since the announcement of the partnership in May, which offers an unparalleled VR racing experience to fans. Additionally, it is the official VR device for the McLaren Shadow Project. The finals of the competition will take place at the McLaren Technology Centre on January 14th to the 17th, 2019, and all finalists will train and compete using the Vive Pro VR headset.
