Go extra wide with Samsung’s 49 inch Odyssey OLED G9 mini-LED curved gaming monitor.

STG received a screen for review, and from the box there’s a bit of DIY.

You’ll get the super wide screen, stand and base with the required cables, including power and display connector cables.

The stand and base are in two separate bits, but it’s relatively easy putting them together. The stand itself clicks in to place and a single screw mounts the base to the stand.

Plug in your power and display connector cable and you’re good to go. Almost.

The Samsung 49 inch Odyssey OLED G9 has an onscreen menu. You may need to toggle through the settings to get your display working from Display port to HDMI or vice versa. I also advise that you check the capabilities of your Graphics Card (if using on PC) as this will help with applying the correct modes on to your screen.

To say that the Samsung 49 inch Odyssey OLED G9 monitor has a lot of screen real estate is an understatement.

For day-to day use (non-gaming) you can easily have multiple windows open, making the Odyssey OLED G9 to the likes of a dual monitor setup on a single screen.

There’s RGB lighting at the back, which is super cool, but not so effective in a darker environment. It’s just not quite bright enough.

Around the back you have more ports than you’ll ever need. There’s HDMI and Display Adaptor ports of course. In addition to those is a micro-HDMI and USB-A’s.

For the review model received, which was sadly in a well used condition, we tried both HDMI cable (not supplied) and Display port.

Ensuring that your GC (Graphics Card) is compatible with the 32:9 ratio and 5120 x 1440 resolution as well as HDR10+ you’re ready to get in to gaming, like you’ve never experienced before.

Some games tended to auto box – but this can be sorted for a fullscreen within that particular game’s menu / display settings. This is game specific though.

The 240Hz refresh and 0.03ms response rate really pays off if you’re playing something fast paced or when you need to react quickly and need know the threats as they appear in real time.

Despite the condition of the monitor that was sent to us, the OLED was popping, bright, detailed and on most games, having that extra graphical render space was mint.

The Odyssey OLED G9 monitor will require a large space. Bear this in mind when you’re looking to upsize your current screen. While the base is small it’s that super wide curved girth you’ll need to consider.

A killer gaming screen that makes gaming even that more submersible, but it does come at a price.

The Samsung 49 inch Odyssey OLED G9 monitor is a few thousand dollars of kit that is aimed at the serious PC players out there to loot, shoot and win on the battlefield.

Samsung has just announced the global launch of the Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor (G93SC model), which has been enhanced with an even larger and wider display, starting a new era of OLED gaming.

Building on the success of last year’s Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SB), the new monitor joins the lineup to open a new era of OLED gaming.

“Last year, Samsung addressed the demands and expectations of even the most experienced gamers with the launch of the Odyssey OLED G8,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the introduction of the Odyssey OLED G9, equipped with unrivalled picture quality, we are excited to offer our customers these powerful gaming monitors and raise the bar for OLED gaming.”

Measuring 49 inches in size with a 1800R curvature, the Odyssey OLED G9 is the first OLED monitor to offer Dual Quad High Definition (DQHD; 5,120 x 1,440) resolution with a 32:9 ratio. The large and wide screen ratio enables users to lose themselves in super-ultrawide vistas — equivalent to two QHD screens side by side. At the same time, its rapid 0.03ms grey-to-grey (GtG) response time and 240Hz refresh rate offer players a competitive edge.

The addition of the Neo Quantum Processor Pro sets the Odyssey OLED G9 apart from other OLED gaming monitors. Using a deep learning algorithm, it intelligently analyses images and automatically upscales to adjust brightness while amplifying contrast. This enables the monitor to restore each detail and deliver the most brilliant images, pixel by pixel.

AMD FreeSync Premium Pro further enhances the Odyssey OLED G9’s super smooth gameplay experience. With DisplayHDR True Black 400, the monitor delivers incredible details and vivid colours regardless of the game being played or the content the user is watching.

The Odyssey OLED G9 features a slim design housed within a sleek metal frame. On the back of the monitor is the much-loved CoreSync and Core Lighting+ which uses advanced lighting technology to match the colours on-screen, making content more immersive and bringing the gaming experience to life. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is super wide, think of two monitors sealed together to create one, and perfectly curved to a game playing immersion.

As for sounds – your current gaming speakers will have to suffice – the Samsung Neo G9 Odyssey does not have built in audio.

But let’s not forget non-gamers out there.

Sure this is a gaming monitor, but if we are to consider the visuals, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is an ultra investment for Content Creators and Digital Designers.

Given the wide screen you can easily have three creative apps open and up front.

If you’re a multi-tasker wizard, well then Samsung have created the perfect monitor for you.

One of the best screens money can buy currently and being cashed up you’ll need to be as the price tag won’t see much change after $3K+ (NZD).

The positionable base of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 has a low footprint on one’s desktop, however the width of the monitor itself maybe too wide for some setups. That said, if you’re able to comfortably house two decently sized screens, the Neo G9 Odyssey should be okay, if not snug.

If you opt for wall mount, then sure, you can – but this beast is designed to be a free standing screen.

Bear in mind weight too. The Neo G9 Odyssey is no lite-weight at a whopping 14.5 kg.

So yes, while the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 49 inch curved gaming monitor is super pricey and is not going to be in everyone’s budget, it most definitely is a top shelf monitor, second to none to game, create and lose yourself within. It’s in its own league.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is future proofed and a totally worthy upgrade that should see you right for a few years.

Global electronics brand Panasonic has announced to us here at STG a new flagship Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera, the Panasonic LUMIX G9.

This state-of-the-art, high spec camera will delight both sports and wildlife photographers, and anyone else keen to capture the sharpest, brightest images.

Digital Cameras will feature on many Christmas wish-lists, but photographers will have to wait until January 2018 to get their hands on the new LUMIX G9. The expected market price is from around $2,800 NZD (GST inclusive) for the body only to $3,100 NZD (GST inclusive) for the full Kit.

Panasonic’s LUMIX G9 follows in the footsteps of its digital camera predecessor, the LUMIX GH5, which was released earlier this year. At the time, the GH5 was the highest specified Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera and was lauded by professional and amateur photographers around the world.

Now, the LUMIX G9 heralds the arrival of the highest-ever image quality in photographic shooting by elevating resolution, gradation and colour reproduction with its 20.3-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor without low-pass filter. The addition of a High-Resolution mode also provides 80-megapixel equivalent images in JPEG /RAW formats in the camera.

Other improvements on the previous flagship model include better Body I.S. (Image Stabilizer), making it possible to use a 6.5-stop slower shutter speed. This has been achieved by a more accurate calculation of shake in various shooting conditions, using information from the gyrosensor, image sensor and accelerometer sensor.

The G9’s high-speed, high-precision Auto Focus (AF) with Depth From Defocus (DFD) technology achieves a minimum AF speed of 0.04 sec, which is currently the fastest in the Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera industry. Sports photographers won’t lose their target subject thanks to the G9’s high tracking performance to a subject. The LUMIX G9 also boasts the fastest-in-class 20 fps (AFC) / 60 fps (AFS) in 20.3-megapixel full resolution to capture those unmissable moments. Complying with 6K/4K PHOTO, users can choose the most suitable burst shooting mode in addition to the regular consecutive shooting mode, depending on the situation.

Wildlife photographers will appreciate the G9’s largest-in-class LVF (Live View Finder) with a stunningly high magnification ratio of approx.1.66x / 0.83x (35mm camera equivalent). No blackouts occur even in

high-speed burst shooting. Night mode and an AF Point Scope function are also integrated, and the magnesium alloy full die-cast front and rear frame means the G9 is not only splashproof and dustproof but also freezeproof down to minus 10 degrees centigrade.

The LUMIX G9 is one of Panasonic’s 100-year Anniversary model products. In 2018 Panasonic celebrates its centenary, and has selected key models across the Panasonic range to highlight as Anniversary models.
