A new report claims that Tencent was the undisclosed lead financial backer behind Highguard, the struggling free to play shooter from Wildlight Entertainment. The revelation comes as the game faces collapsing player numbers, layoffs at the studio, and mounting questions about its future.

For months, Wildlight had described Highguard as “fully funded” but declined to say by whom. Now, according to journalist Stephen Totilo at Game File, Chinese tech giant Tencent was the primary financial force behind the project.

Game File Report Names Tencent As Lead Financial Backer

In a report published on February 18, Totilo cited sources familiar with the matter who said Tencent was the “undisclosed lead financial backer” of Wildlight Entertainment. More specifically, the funding is said to have come through TiMi Studio Group, one of Tencent’s major internal studio groups.

Neither Tencent nor Wildlight Entertainment provided comment by press time, and both companies have so far avoided publicly confirming the financial relationship.

The secrecy around Highguard’s funding had become one of several lingering mysteries surrounding the studio, particularly as scrutiny increased following the game’s rocky launch.

Highguard’s Turbulent Launch And Rapid Decline

Highguard launched on January 26 and initially looked promising, peaking at nearly 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. According to SteamDB data, that number has since fallen dramatically to just over 1,500 to 2,000 peak concurrent players.

The game also received mixed to largely negative user reviews, with players criticising progression systems and overall balance. Despite post launch updates, including the introduction of a 5v5 mode and a ranked mode in Episode 2, the player base has continued to shrink.

In recent weeks, multiple former developers publicly shared that they had been laid off. Wildlight later confirmed it had let go of “a number” of staff, leaving a smaller core team to continue supporting the game.

Website Taken Offline Amid Ongoing Changes

Adding to the uncertainty, Highguard’s official website was briefly taken offline. Users attempting to access it were redirected to a support email. A developer later explained in the game’s Discord that the site was being transferred and simplified, calling it a low priority compared to in game updates.

Wildlight operates out of Los Angeles and Seattle, and prior to the layoffs reportedly had around 100 employees, including several former Respawn Entertainment developers. It remains unclear whether Tencent had any involvement in the studio’s decision to reduce staff.

Tencent’s Broader Gaming Portfolio

Tencent is widely regarded as the world’s largest video game company by revenue. Its investment portfolio includes major titles such as PUBG Mobile and League of Legends, and it holds stakes in companies like Epic Games and Ubisoft.

Industry figures have noted that Tencent often seeds funding into studios without acting as a traditional publisher, allowing developers to retain independence and pursue their own publishing deals. That could explain why Wildlight consistently referred to Highguard as fully funded while avoiding disclosure of its backers.

Highguard was first revealed during The Game Awards 2025, with host Geoff Keighley reportedly offering the trailer slot for free. Tencent senior vice president Steven Ma is a member of The Game Awards advisory board, though no direct link has been confirmed between that and the funding arrangement.

What Comes Next For Highguard

With Tencent reportedly backing Highguard from behind the scenes, attention now shifts to whether additional financial support will continue as player numbers remain low.

Wildlight has outlined an ambitious year one roadmap, complete with seasonal updates and lore cinematics, but with a reduced team and dwindling player engagement, the path forward looks uncertain.

Until Tencent or Wildlight publicly confirm the partnership, the funding details remain based on reporting from sources familiar with the matter. Still, the report adds a significant new layer to the ongoing story of one of 2026’s most turbulent game launches.

Valorant Mobile has quickly become one of the biggest gaming stories of the year, and not just in China. Following an explosive debut and record-breaking player numbers, excitement is building around when Riot Games and Tencent will finally roll out the global version. With new claims that the worldwide servers are already complete, fans may not have to wait much longer.

Here is everything you need to know about Valorant Mobile’s success so far, the esports plans evolving around it, and what the latest reports suggest about a global launch.

China’s Biggest Mobile Game Launch of 2025

Tencent has confirmed that Valorant Mobile stands as China’s most successful mobile release of the year by first month DAU and gross receipts. The game launched on 19 August and immediately made a splash, pulling in around $1 million and 170,000 downloads within its first 24 hours.

Since then, growth has skyrocketed. According to Tencent’s Q3 earnings presentation, the Valorant franchise more than doubled its monthly players from July to October, surpassing 50 million MAU. PC numbers surged as well, with DAU and gross receipts hitting record highs in September thanks to new esports-themed weapon bundles.

This momentum also helped Tencent record a 15 percent year-over-year revenue increase, underlining how central Valorant Mobile has already become to the company’s wider portfolio.

A New Mobile Esports Ecosystem Is Taking Shape

Valorant Mobile’s Chinese launch has not only been successful as a game release, but also as the foundation of a brand new esports scene.

The first LAN tournament has already taken place, and China’s national circuit is set to wrap up in December 2025. The scale and structure of these events suggest a vision to mirror the popularity and professionalism of Valorant’s PC ecosystem, especially in regions where mobile gaming thrives.

Riot and Tencent have even committed 1.5 billion RMB, roughly $200 Million, to developing the game’s esports infrastructure. With this level of investment, a global competitive circuit is almost guaranteed to follow once the international release lands.

So When Is Valorant Mobile Releasing Globally?

Despite massive demand, Riot Games and Tencent have not confirmed an official global release date. The game remains exclusive to China, although some players outside the country have managed to test it using VPNs.

However, rumours are heating up. A Chinese pro player recently claimed that the global servers are already built and ready to go. According to them, Riot and Tencent are simply waiting for the results of China’s National Finals. If the event concludes as strongly as expected, the worldwide rollout could begin sooner rather than later.

#ValorantMobile
A Chinese pro player claims that the Global server is already fully ready for launch. Riot and Tencent are allegedly just waiting for the results of the National Finals in China. If it’s a success there, Global might be released sooner than we think. pic.twitter.com/ShW4clbE1d

— Суслик (@Sussiiik) December 1, 2025

The Finals wrap in December 2025, and based on ongoing speculation, an announcement may arrive before the end of the year. Many industry watchers now believe an early 2026 release is the most likely scenario.

Global Hype Continues To Grow

Valorant Mobile’s explosive popularity in China, combined with massive corporate investment and a rapidly forming esports scene, signals big things ahead. With more than 50 million players already in the ecosystem, demand for a worldwide launch is only increasing.

While we await official confirmation, one thing feels certain. When Valorant Mobile finally goes global, it is poised to become one of the biggest mobile esports titles on the planet.

Beta Season Wraps Up on December 4

The Splitgate 2 team thanked fans for jumping into the last beta, which ran from November 22 to 23. It marked the end of a six month stretch of testing that focused on party modes, classic and loadout arenas, the Karman Station map and various gameplay systems.

On December 4, the Beta Season officially ends. Battle Pass progress, seasonal ranks and other beta specific rewards will be reset. Most notably, the beta servers will also be taken offline as the studio prepares for the relaunch later in the month.

Splitgate 2 is re-releasing in December!

This relaunch follows the game’s return to beta after an unsuccessful launch earlier this year because the devs admitted they released the game too early and failed to deliver a polished experience.pic.twitter.com/m2optRSKhs

1047 Games has not revealed a specific relaunch date, but teased that more updates are coming soon.

“We Launched Too Early”: Why Splitgate 2 Returned to Beta

Splitgate 2 originally released in June this year with big expectations. The original game became an overnight hit thanks to its portal mechanics and tight arena shooter design, peaking at almost 70,000 concurrent players on Steam. The sequel attempted to expand the formula with new maps, modes, and even a Battle Royale component.

Despite that ambition, the launch struggled. Splitgate 2 debuted to around 25,000 concurrent players, but lost more than 80 percent of its player base in the following weeks. Criticism targeted issues with the Ranked system, bundle pricing, and general polish. A string of unrelated controversies, including the CEO’s infamous hat at Summer Game Fest and comments made by the studio’s Social Media Manager, added more fuel to the fire.

By late July, the team openly admitted they “launched too early” and rolled the game back into beta. Layoffs soon followed as the remaining developers focused on rebuilding the experience from the ground up.

What Has Changed During Development?

According to 1047 Games, the months of downtime have been used to refine the core gameplay loop. Movement, portals, and gunplay have reportedly been reworked to better capture what made the original Splitgate fun.

Progression and monetisation systems were also revisited after heavy backlash against expensive cosmetic bundles, including one priced at 140 USD. Map design and matchmaking are receiving updates as well.

The studio says the entire foundation of Splitgate 2 has been rebuilt with long term support in mind. This time, they are not chasing massive hype. Instead, CEO Ian Proulx says the goal is simple, to release a great game first and grow it over time.

Can Splitgate 2 Build an Esports Future?

Esports potential has always been part of the Splitgate conversation, thanks to its high skill ceiling and dynamic portal plays. While the sequel has not hosted any official esports events since launch, the community kept the competitive spirit alive this year.

The Splitgate Showdown, held from June 13 to 23, brought together teams representing major content creators like Shroud, TimTheTatman and Nadeshot. Players could earn in game rewards and compete for bragging rights.

If the December relaunch delivers a stronger, more stable experience, fans believe Splitgate 2 could take another shot at building a proper competitive scene. A successful reboot would not only restore the community’s confidence but open the door for future tournaments.

A Second Chance Arrives in December

Splitgate 2’s return comes earlier than planned. 1047 Games initially aimed for early 2026, but the team says the rebuild progressed faster than expected. With servers going dark on December 4 and a full relaunch happening later the same month, fans will not have to wait long to see how much has changed.

After a turbulent start, Splitgate 2 now has the rare opportunity to try again. Whether it can recapture the magic of the original remains to be seen, but players are ready to give it another shot.

The Battle Royale Fans Have Been Waiting For

Ever since Battlefield 6 was unveiled, rumours of an accompanying battle royale mode have never really gone away. EA even confirmed its existence years ago, and some lucky players got to try early builds through the Battlefield Labs testing program. Those early testers gave glowing feedback, describing it as the “most intense squad experience” they’ve played in years.

Now, EA has finally made it official. RedSec, short for Redacted Sector, is dropping alongside Battlefield 6’s Season 1 update, bringing a new map, weapons, and cosmetics, and of course, an all-new way to experience the franchise’s signature chaos.

Launch Time Revealed

EA confirmed that Battlefield RedSec will officially go live at 8:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM ET / 3:00 PM UTC / 4:00 PM BST / 5:00 PM CEST / Midnight JST / 2:00 AM AEDT (October 29).

That means Kiwi and Aussie players will be jumping in a little later than the rest of the world, but the upside is that servers should be stable by the time the Southern Hemisphere joins the fight.

Mark your calendars, October 28 at 8:00 AM PT is when the next big Battlefield experience officially begins.

A Ruthless Zone and Tactical Intensity

The name RedSec isn’t just for flair. It’s inspired by the mode’s unique zone mechanic, which is said to be more punishing than any battle royale before it. Unlike Fortnite’s storm or Warzone’s gas cloud, the shrinking ring in RedSec will instantly kill players the moment they touch it, no second chances.

This design choice encourages aggressive, tactical play and keeps every encounter high-stakes. It fits the Battlefield DNA perfectly: large-scale combat, squad coordination, and the constant push to survive against both the environment and other players.

EA hasn’t shown the full gameplay just yet, the official RedSec trailer is set to premiere tomorrow on YouTube, coinciding with the launch itself.

Free-To-Play and Cross-Platform

One of the biggest surprises is that RedSec will be completely free-to-play, even if you don’t own Battlefield 6. This move mirrors Activision’s strategy with Call of Duty: Warzone, and could help introduce new players to the mainline game.

Considering Battlefield 6 already boasts over 520,000 concurrent players from its open beta — surpassing every Call of Duty beta record, RedSec could become the franchise’s biggest breakout moment yet.

Positive Early Impressions

Feedback from the Battlefield Labs playtests has been overwhelmingly positive. Reddit user Dimension_Forsaken described RedSec as delivering “an adrenaline rush that no other battle royale can match,” while another tester admitted they were sceptical at first but ended up “completely converted” after just one match.

While balancing and pacing may have evolved since those early builds, the consensus is clear — RedSec could finally give Warzone and Fortnite some genuine competition.

A Busy Week for Battle Royale Fans

RedSec’s launch timing is particularly interesting, as Fortnite also kicks off its new season next week featuring a massive Simpsons-themed crossover event. With both games competing for attention, the coming days are shaping up to be a major moment for the battle royale scene.

Battlefield 6: RedSec launches October 28 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Expect the full trailer and more gameplay details when Season 1 officially goes live tomorrow.

Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek, one of the biggest names in FPS streaming, hasn’t held back when it comes to his thoughts on Call of Duty esports. During a recent stream, while playing Battlefield 2042 of all things, he claimed that CoD’s competitive scene “lacks depth” and has become stale.

Shroud on Call of Duty esports

also smokes and snipers are banned in COD pro games so thats kinda weird pic.twitter.com/SWDjYR1PJp

— Shroud Updates (@ShroudUpdate) August 20, 2025

According to Shroud, pro players lean on the same old tricks that have worked for years, which makes high-level matches feel repetitive and hard to tell apart. He even went as far as saying you can’t really distinguish one player from another anymore, everyone’s playing at such a high level that the differences are blurred.

“Call of Duty on paper should be one of the biggest esports in the world. The main reason it’s not, is because the game lacks depth. You just hold Mouse 1 and dropshot sometimes,” Shroud said.

His comments sparked mixed reactions across the CoD community. While plenty agreed with his point, others argued that with a trained eye you can spot the nuances between players. OpTic Texas analyst JohnPaul “JPKrez” Krez pushed back, saying the skill gap is still noticeable. Former Toronto Ultra pro Ben “Beans” McMellon went further, claiming CoD was never really built for competitive play in the first place, especially when compared to esports giants like CS:GO or League of Legends.

None of these are CODs real problems though…

COD just isn’t built for competitive and never will be unlike other games like CS and LoL.

The esport will just never reach the heights that it could man. https://t.co/jvTKCN4xkl

Why CoD Esports Feels Restrictive

One of the biggest complaints is how restrictive competitive Call of Duty has become. Maps, weapons, and even whole gun categories are regularly banned, leaving players with the same narrow pool of tools. That leads to matches looking nearly identical, aside from the players behind the mouse and keyboard.

New mechanics could shake things up, but Activision has often been hesitant to introduce major changes because the community tends to be split. Just look at the reaction to Black Ops 6’s “omnimovement.” Even the recent reveal of Black Ops 7 at Gamescom didn’t escape heavy criticism, despite fan-favourite maps like Raid returning.

Battlefield’s Shadow

Some reckon Battlefield’s resurgence has only made CoD look worse. With Battlefield 6 pulling huge numbers during its open beta weekends, players started comparing the two franchises more than ever. Shroud himself only noticed CoD’s flaws after spending time with BF6.

Shroud on Battlefield 6 vs 2042

The Call of Duty League continues to pull massive viewership, and the release of Black Ops 7 could add some much-needed variety with its new movement mechanics and weapon arsenal. Whether that’ll be enough to silence critics like Shroud remains to be seen.

Counter-Strike 2 might be about to level up its chicken game… literally.

Dataminer Maksim “Gabe Follower” Poletayev recently dove into CS2’s game files and came back with some clucking wild finds. According to his discoveries, the game now contains animations for inspecting an egg, petting a chicken, and even holding a full-sized chook in your hands. Yep, your favourite casual match chicken might soon be more than just a wandering mascot.

Eggs, Auctions, and Virtual Pets

The files also reference something called a “secret auction” in the Armory. Instead of just buying an item outright, players will be able to bid using “stars” for limited edition loot. It’s a blind auction, you won’t see what other players are bidding, and the highest bidder when the timer runs out wins. Bid too low, and not only will you miss out, but you’ll lose the stars you wagered (unless you back out before the clock hits zero).

One of the more bizarre rewards? Chicken eggs. But these aren’t just static items. According to Gabe Follower, each egg will go through three stages: egg, chick, and adult chicken. When your chicken hatches, it’ll have a unique pattern generated just for your account, making your pet one of a kind. You’ll be able to feed it, pet it, plonk it on the ground, and even show it off in your main menu.

🤨 CS2 will have COCKS?@gabefollower found eggs in the game files. CS2 already has animations for:
• inspecting an egg
• inspecting a chicken (you can also pet it)
• holding a huge c…hicken in your hands 🐔

Chicken eggs will probably be sold via auction in Armory Pass pic.twitter.com/LQhl2gfJ4S

— CS.MONEY (@csmoneytrade) August 12, 2025

How This Mirrors Valorant’s “Flex”

If you’ve been playing Valorant recently, you might notice a familiar vibe here. Riot’s shooter introduced “Flex” in patch v10.00, cosmetic items you can equip and use in matches via the Expressions Wheel. While Flex in Valorant aren’t living, breathing pets, they do share the same concept of giving players more personality and flair outside of traditional skins.

In both cases, these features are about more than just cosmetics, they’re about player expression. Whether you’re raising a one-of-a-kind chicken in CS2 or whipping out your favourite Flex in Valorant, the goal is to inject more fun and individuality into the game experience.

Why This Matters

Counter-Strike has always been a game about precision, skill, and serious competition. But the addition of something light-hearted like chicken pets could be a sign that Valve is looking to match other shooters in giving players more personalisation tools. It’s also a clever way to keep players engaged, after all, who’s going to skip matches when they’ve got a baby chicken to raise?

Whether you think this is genius or just plain silly, one thing’s certain: if these leaks are legit, CS2’s chickens are about to become a whole lot more than just background noise.

The first Battlefield 6 open beta weekend has wrapped up, and while there’s plenty of praise going around, former WWE star Samoa Joe might’ve summed up the mood better than anyone.

Is the new Battlefield kinda hitting for anyone else, or was the bar so low I’m just grateful? I’m really rooting for the former over the latter.

— Samoa Joe (@SamoaJoe) August 10, 2025

If you’ve been around the series for a while, like Joe, who’s been playing since the early 2010s, you’ll know exactly what he means. Battlefield’s had its fair share of highs and lows, and for a lot of players, the disappointment of 2042 is still fresh in memory.

Beta Weekend One: Big Numbers, Bigger Buzz

From August 7–10, Battlefield 6’s Early Access and Open Beta Weekend 1 pulled in massive numbers. Steamcharts recorded a peak of nearly 520,000 players, even outdoing Call of Duty’s all-time peak. And that’s not counting those still hanging around in servers 12 hours after they were meant to be offline.

‘Battlefield 6’ beta has beaten Call of Duty’s all-time player count record on Steam 🎮

• COD’s peak — 491,670 players

• Battlefield 6’s peak — 500K+ players pic.twitter.com/MKW2bCJ33a

— Culture Crave 🍿 (@CultureCrave) August 9, 2025

Players got stuck into a mix of weapons, modes, and maps, with the servers holding up surprisingly well given the traffic. That in itself is a relief for long-time fans, considering how rocky some past Battlefield launches have been.

Sure, there were nitpicks, some maps felt cramped, the lack of a proper server browser annoyed a few, and not everything was perfectly balanced, but overall, the mood was optimistic. DICE seem to have taken lessons from past mistakes, bringing back the series’ more grounded, tactical feel.

From WWE to FPS

Samoa Joe isn’t just a casual drop-in. Aside from his wrestling and acting gigs (including playing Sweet Tooth’s physical form in the Twisted Metal series), he’s an avid gamer with a frankly “gross” Steam backlog, as he’s admitted. Seeing someone with his experience in both entertainment and gaming hype up Battlefield 6 is a solid sign the game’s hitting more than it’s missing.

Steam Sales… A gift and a curse.

— Samoa Joe (@SamoaJoe) December 21, 2013

Could Battlefield Finally Find Its Esports Footing?

Battlefield has never really broken into the mainstream esports scene the way Call of Duty has, but with high-profile players and celebrities talking about it this early, the potential’s there. If the final release delivers in October and the devs keep listening to feedback, we might see Battlefield 6 become not just a fan favourite, but a serious competitive title.

For now, the beta’s back on August 14 with more maps and modes to try. Whether you’re rooting for the “it’s actually good” camp like Samoa Joe, or cautiously enjoying the ride, it’s shaping up to be the most promising Battlefield in years.
