FX is diving into Ubisoft’s blockbuster franchise, ordering a brand-new Far Cry live-action TV series led by Fargo creator Noah Hawley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob Mac. The show will stream on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally, marking the first time Far Cry is adapted into a major live-action series.

FX confirmed the news in a series announcement, revealing that the adaptation will follow the games’ well-known anthology style. Each season will introduce a fresh cast, a new location, and a standalone story, mirroring the structure that helped turn the franchise into one of Ubisoft’s biggest hits.

A Big New Project For Rob Mac And Noah Hawley

The series brings together two creative powerhouses who already have strong ties with FX. Rob Mac, who recently changed his legal name from McElhenney, is best known for creating and starring in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, now the longest-running live-action sitcom in American TV history with 17 seasons. He also co-writes and stars in the Emmy-winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, and previously collaborated with Ubisoft on the Apple TV comedy Mythic Quest.

Hawley, meanwhile, is one of FX’s biggest creative voices. He created the award-winning anthology hit Fargo, as well as the sci-fi series Alien: Earth, which recently secured a second season. His previous works also include Marvel’s Legion.

Mac will star in the new Far Cry series while also serving as executive producer. Hawley will executive produce under his 26 Keys banner as part of his overall FX and Disney Entertainment Television deal.

Both creators have expressed enthusiasm for the project.

Staying True To Far Cry’s Anthology Roots

Producers confirmed the new series will retain the franchise’s signature standalone format. Like the games, each season will deliver its own story, tone, and setting, capturing the chaotic sandbox feel Far Cry fans love.

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad expressed full confidence in the creative team, noting that FX’s combined partnerships with Mac and Hawley span six series and 32 seasons of television.

He added, “I have no doubt that they will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining.”

Ubisoft Deepens Its Push Into Film And Television

The Far Cry adaptation marks another major step in Ubisoft’s ongoing effort to expand its gaming worlds into new media. Far Cry has more than 100 million unique players across its mainline games and spinoffs since debuting in 2004. The most recent entry, Far Cry 6, launched in 2021 with Giancarlo Esposito as its central villain.

This will be Ubisoft’s first live-action Far Cry series, following earlier attempts including 2023’s animated Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix on Netflix and the infamous 2008 Uwe Boll film.

Ubisoft currently has several other adaptations in development, including a live-action Assassin’s Creed series and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which premiered on Netflix in October.

Ubisoft has officially launched Vantage Studios, a brand-new subsidiary set to take charge of three of its biggest franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.

The studio, which was first unveiled earlier this year, marks the beginning of Ubisoft’s wider transformation strategy. The goal is to create dedicated “creative houses” responsible for individual franchises, giving developers more autonomy while maintaining the support of Ubisoft’s global expertise and technical infrastructure.

What is Vantage Studios?

Vantage Studios brings together thousands of developers across Ubisoft’s Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia studios. Many of these teams have already played key roles in shaping the long-running franchises, and the new structure is designed to give them more hands-on control over future projects.

The subsidiary is led by Charlie Guillemot and Christophe Derennes, who stepped into their co-CEO roles in July. Derennes, a co-founder of Ubisoft’s Montréal studio in 1997, previously oversaw the company’s North American operations, while Guillemot made his career at Owlient, the Ubisoft-acquired studio behind Howrse.

In an earlier announcement, Derennes described Ubisoft’s long-term vision: “Our objective is to grow these iconic brands while remaining loyal to their DNA. When we look at the evolution of Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry, we can see that they are no longer just games, they are universes with a host of new possibilities available to us.”

Backed by Tencent Investment

Vantage Studios was officially set up following a significant €1.16bn (~£1bn) investment from Tencent, which acquired a 25% minority stake in the subsidiary. This partnership gives Ubisoft additional financial firepower to expand its franchises while continuing to evolve their global reach.

The company has confirmed that Vantage Studios is just the first of several upcoming creative houses, each dedicated to different franchises under Ubisoft’s portfolio.

What Does This Mean for Players?

Ubisoft says the restructuring will help build stronger connections between developers and players, making it easier for teams to respond directly to community feedback while still leveraging Ubisoft’s shared services, tools, and technology.

The move could also impact esports, particularly for Rainbow Six Siege. With developers gaining more autonomy, it may open doors for new content or updates that align more closely with the competitive scene. For now, BLAST continues to operate the official Rainbow Six esports circuit, with the next major event—the BLAST R6 Major Munich 2025—set for November 8 to 16. Whether Vantage Studios will roll out significant updates to Siege ahead of the tournament remains to be seen.

Ubisoft has confirmed that the creation of Vantage Studios is only the beginning. More subsidiaries will follow as part of its long-term transformation, each focused on building out the future of Ubisoft’s franchises with a balance of creative independence and shared expertise.
