On this day, exactly 47 years ago, Elton John’s legendary performance at Dodger Stadium launched him into global stardom, and next month, he will come full circle, returning to Dodger Stadium to grace us with his final North American show.

Exclusively streamed live on Disney+ on Monday, November 21, 2022, “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” will be the first-ever livestream event for Disney+ in Australia and New Zealand.

“Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” is a once-in-a-lifetime live, global original concert event that offers fans from around the world a front-row seat to witness the groundbreaking magic of the Rocket Man back at Dodger Stadium.

The historic three-hour livestream, from Disney Branded Television and produced by Fulwell 73 Productions and Rocket Entertainment, will showcase Elton John as audiences have never seen him before, paying tribute to the icon and the seminal moment in 1975 that cemented his global success.  The concert will begin with “Countdown to Elton Live” from Dodger Stadium.

The extraordinary night also will feature several yet-to-be-announced big-name artists who will honour the legendary megastar on stage.

This spectacular evening will serve as a prelude to the highly anticipated 2023 Disney Original Documentary “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years That Made His Legend,” from Academy Award nominee R.J. Cutler and filmmaker David Furnish. As the official feature on Elton John, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” will unveil unseen rehearsal and concert footage over the last 50 years, along with exclusive personal archives and interviews. The definitive portrait of Elton John also will spotlight his final months on the road and a look back at the extraordinary first five years of his career between 1970 and 1975, when he released 10 iconic albums, seven of which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts to become a global phenomenon. The film will play festivals and have a theatrical run before it streams on Disney+.

UMC and EMI today announces the 50th anniversary reissue of Elton John’s Madman Across The Water.

Spawning the hits ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Levon’, Madman Across The Water was Elton’s fourth studio album, released only two years after his debut.

Recorded in 1971, it was a foundation stone of what was to become a dazzlingly prolific decade for the global-icon-in-waiting. Madman Across The Water was largely written after Elton had made his initial foray to America; offering the opportunity for lyricist Bernie Taupin to witness first-hand the landscapes and people he’d only seen on a screen or on the page.

Recorded at Trident Studios in Central London in February and August 1971, it was the first album where all five players of Elton’s fabled band line up (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper) were featured. The album also featured Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who plays Hammond organ on three songs.

A newly unveiled Piano Demo of ‘Tiny Dancer’, taken from the archives and previously unheard, will be available to stream in full later today.

Recorded at Dick James Studios in central London in Spring 1971, it is an intimate performance of the song with Elton alone at the piano as a guide for the band later to follow.

While the UK’s love affair with Elton was still bubbling under upon Madman’s release at the start of the ‘70s, these nine tracks immediately struck a chord with US audiences, reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard album charts. It also spawned two hit singles, ‘Levon’ and ‘Tiny Dancer’ both reaching the US Top 50.

After years as a best kept secret to Elton’s fans, ‘Tiny Dancer’ has gone on to become one of his most loved songs with his worldwide fanbase, third only to ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Your Song’ in global streaming numbers. Capturing the headiness of California at the time of Elton’s first US concerts, the song was used to phenomenal effect in Cameron Crowe’s classic 2000 film Almost Famous. Both ‘Levon’ and ‘Tiny Dancer’ remain firm live favourites to this day, taking pride of place in the setlist for Elton’s record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The celebration of Madman Across The Water comes in four different formats. All formats contain Bob Ludwig’s 2016 remaster of the main album.

There are 18 previously unreleased tracks across the Super Deluxe 3-CD/1-Blu-ray box set, which also contains rare, restored material from the era, piano demos of the album, and the audio of the BBC Sounds For Saturday concert, broadcast in 1972.

The Blu Ray contains a 5.1 mix by Greg Penny, plus the Sounds For Saturday and his 1971 Old Grey Whistle Test performance. The audio of the Super Deluxe CD/Blu-ray set will also be available on a 4-LP set. The box set includes photos, an essay with interviews with those who helped make the album as well as memorabilia and artwork taken from the Rocket Archive. The album will also be available as a limited edition blue and white coloured 180g LP.

Elton John has announced the forthcoming release of ‘The Lockdown Sessions’. An album of collaborations recorded remotely over the last 18 months.

In March 2020 Elton was forced to pause his record breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour due to the unfolding COVID pandemic.

As the world began to shut down, different projects presented themselves with artists Elton had enjoyed getting to know through his Apple Music show Rocket Hour.

This was the beginning of one of Elton’s boldest and most interesting records to date that he has billed ‘The Lockdown Sessions’. This album saw Elton coming full circle and returning to his roots as a session musician. While it was no easy feat recording during a pandemic, a completely new way of working for Elton, he leaned into the challenge with some magnificent results.

Kicking off with current single ‘Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)’with Dua Lipa, the album takes the listener on a heady journey through many different genres, all held together with expert finesse and understanding by one of the greatest champions of music of our time.

Much more than a mere collaboration album, ‘The Lockdown Sessions’ is a dazzlingly diverse collection of 16 tracks with 10 brand new unreleased tracks that celebrates togetherness and sees Elton collaborating with an unparalleled range of artists only he could draw together. The enduring influence of his musical milestone with one of the most ambitious projects ever conceived.

And I realised there was something weirdly familiar about working like this. At the start of my career, in the late 60s, I worked as a session musician. Working with different artists during lockdown reminded me of that. I’d come full circle: I was a session musician again. And it was still a blast.”

Previously unreleased, the track was written and recorded as a band demo in 1969. ‘Sing Me No Sad Songs’ is a fascinating first taste of what was to come from Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin, and one that mentions not one, but two, future smashes in its lyrics – ‘Sad Songs (Say So Much)’ from 1984’s ‘Breaking Hearts’ album and Elton’s first UK chart-topping single ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ from 1976.

Speaking of the release, Elton says ‘To delve back through every period of my career in such detail for ‘Jewel Box’ has been an absolute pleasure. Hearing these long lost tracks again, I find it hard to comprehend just how prolific Bernie and I were during the early days. The songs just poured out of us and the band were just unbelievable in the studio. I always want to push forward with everything I do and look to the future, but having time during lockdown to take stock and pull these moments from my memory from each era has been a joy.

As a devout record collector myself, this project has really excited me and I couldn’t be happier with the level of craft involved in such a carefully curated, lovingly constructed boxset. I’m sure my fans will enjoy it as much as I have.’

Elton John is set to launch a weekly archival concert footage series entitled “Elton John: Classic Concert Series,” featuring some of his most monumental concerts from around the world on his Official YouTube Channel.

Beginning this Saturday, July 4 4am NZST exclusively on YouTube and available digitally in its entirety for the first time ever, the series will Premiere with “Live at Playhouse Theatre, Edinburgh” from 1976. Following this Friday’s episode,  a new, epic two-hour concert set will Premiere on Elton John’s YouTube Channel every Saturday at 4am NZST for a total of six weeks. The series will raise funds towards the Elton John AIDS Foundation in support of COVID relief efforts.

Elton John says: ‘My Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Fund helps frontline partners prepare for and respond to the pandemic and its effects on HIV prevention and care for the most marginalized communities,’ says Sir Elton John, ‘We cannot jeopardise HIV testing and care during this time or else the results could be disastrous for the 37.5 million people living with HIV. So, I’m really happy to connect this YouTube Concert series to benefit our Foundation’s urgent COVID response.’

Recorded as part of the Edinburgh Festival of Popular Music on 17th September 1976, ‘Live at the Playhouse Theatre’ gives fans an exhilarating view of Elton at the height of his ‘70s popularity, having just enjoyed his first UK #1 single with ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.’ This electrifying solo performance kicks off with Skyline Pigeon (taken from ‘Empty Sky’) before ending with a riotous version of ‘Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)’. The setlist rips through classic after classic, including ‘Rocket Man,’ ‘Daniel and ‘Bennie and the Jets.’ It was also the first time Elton performed ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ solo. Climbing on his piano and stomping his way through this virtuoso performance, Elton leaves every ounce of himself on the stage, in a classic concert that was to be the last time he would perform a full show for another 7 months.

This year’s most eagerly anticipated soundtrack is released today: Elton John’s epic musical fantasy ‘Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture’.

Released in celebration of Rocket Pictures, MARV Films and Paramount Pictures’ release in UK cinemas now, it sees celebrated producer and composer Giles Martin re-interpreting and re-imagining Elton’s iconic hits, tailoring the music specifically to support the narrative of the upcoming major motion picture, with a truly show stopping vocal performance from lead actor Taron Egerton.

To celebrate the release of ‘Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture’, previously unseen footage from Elton’s legendary Dodger Stadium shows has been unveiled for the first time. Taking place over an Autumn weekend in 1975, the performances saw Elton play two shows to over 110,000 people in two marathon sets of flying piano stools, baseball bats and unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll abandon. The riotous performance of ‘The Bitch Is Back’ (watch above), sees Elton joined on stage by Tennis superstar Billie Jean King. He was the first musical act to perform there since The Beatles nine years earlier, and at that time these were the largest concert events ever by a single artist, cementing Elton’s place at the very top of his game. The performance from Dodger Stadium was recently recreated to stunning effect by Taron Egerton in the epic musical fantasy ‘Rocketman’. Watch Taron’s performance of ‘Rocket Man’ below.

A chubby bespectacled kid from England who’s shy nature and instinctive musical talent on the piano would eventually be a glittery and glamorous tidal wave in the music world throughout the 70s and 80s.

Paramount Pictures’ Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton as Elton John (a name that he takes as a stage name) takes us through Elton’s life from that introverted kid to an entertainer that rocked world stages.

The difficult relationship he had with his father, growing up alone with his mother and his aunt – his love for the American rock and roll scene would soon see a young Elton accepted in to the Royal Academy of Music with a full Scholarship.

Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell) would write the lyrics and Elton would compose the music. Starting out as a backing artist for an American African-American group  his talent is soon noticed and before long is signed on to write music and record.

With Bernie’s and his own talents combined, Elton’s career begins to skyrocket. His songs are heard all over the world, popular in both the U.K. and the U.S.

As things get glitzy and wild, Elton’s inner demons are still crying out, the parental love he never really had hits him hard, his homosexuality during a time where it was not overly accepted leads him to find drink drugs and even food as his addictions spiral out of control.

The film is played out from the moment Elton checks himself in to Alcoholics Anonymous as he takes the viewers through a wild ride of his life.

A love then hate relationship with his manager John Reid (Richard Madden), relationships, friendships, family, fans, fame and money all take their toll.

Rocketman is different to the usual biographic film. It could almost be coined as a musical – which is no surprise, given that Elton was Executive Producer and the film is about him, his life and his music.

Taron’s performance as Elton is flawless. You are pulled in from the start and you’d be forgiven for thinking you are watching the drama’s with the real Elton onscreen.

Made by Marv – the guys that bought us The Kingsmen films (where Elton also does a cameo in the second film), Rocketman is a cynical humorous look through a life well lived. Elton comes across as just one of the lads, a U.K. boy with talents beyond comprehension but embattled with a low self-confidence, extreme shyness and a desire, a need just to be loved.

Rocketman is one of the films that you MUST see this year.

The calibre of names contributing to Revamp is another reminder of Elton’s enduring popularity at a typically busy and prolific time for the superstar. Elton also appeared as himself in a critically lauded, hilariously tongue-in-cheek role in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and his songs soundtrack the forthcoming ‘Sherlock Gnomes’.

Last year also saw Elton and Bernie launch ‘The Cut’, a project allowing undiscovered creative talent from all over the world the chance to create the official music videos for some of their most iconic songs: ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Bennie And The Jets’, each winning video attracting millions upon millions of Youtube views.

Revamp stands as yet another timely reminder of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s influence on the next generation of global stars at a time when their music continues to fill stadiums, sell albums and influence fashion. Elton stands alone as a true great, whose music still garners such admiration from a truly broad range of global stars.

The release of Revamp will also be accompanied by a Nashville influenced album Restoration, also released on April 6th on UMG, featuring Elton’s songs reinterpreted by the biggest in Country music, including Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Miley Cyrus and Willie Nelson.

Director Matthew Vaughn does the secret agent genre a justice one more time with the sequel; Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Following on from 2015’s Kingsman: Secret Service we see the once prodigy Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton) taking the lead as a fully fledged Kingsman Agent after the apparent demise of his mentor Harry Hart.

Eggsy, no longer going by that name, also took on Hart’s Agent name Galahad and with Merlin (Mark Strong) at his side the action bursts on to screen pretty much from the get go.

Tasked with uncovering the mystery surrounding The Golden Circle and having seen a few friends and foes bearing a Golden Circle tattoo Merlin and Galahad delve deeper in to this inner circle, uncovering the ring leader and meeting a few surprising folk along the way.

Then there’s the Statesman. A U.S. based wing of the Secret Agent conglomerate that hides behind a Whiskey distillery. As the mission to the epi-center of the Golden Circle plays out Galahad and Merlin go from the U.K. to the States and beyond as they join forces with the Statesman.

But who is on whose side?

Some old enemies make a comeback aswell as the un-expected and even the musical legend himself Elton John has a role (as himself).

Kingman: The Golden Circle does rely and borrow the great moments from the first film to play out this second chapter. But it is not really all so much the same as what . we saw previously, it is a fine mix of Vaughn’s signature adaption of the Kingman.

A must see film, especially if like me, you couldn’t get enough of the first one.
