Part sequel, part remake, Hexworks’ Lords of the Fallen (2023) is packed with an epic RPG adventure that you make you’re very own.

While the game loosely touches on the prior 2014 game, you needn’t have played that one to get your hands dirty in this iteration.

You start out as a nameless blank canvas of a character that you fully customise.

And here, unfortunately is where the glitches begin too.

During the character build the game would fail to render graphics properly. When you’re making your playable your very own, and adorning tattoos and sculpting face type you don’t really want to see your guy or girl suddenly morph in to a weirdly part hollowed out husk.

In anycase, persevere and get in to the game.

You’re tasked with lighting five beacons spread throughout the world. The beacons, once lit will prevent the return of a dark and evil being called Adyr, who wants to return to the world to ensure chaos.

The story of Lords of the Fallen takes you through crumbling ruins, dark caverns and wild landscapes in Axiom.

But you won’t always stay in Axiom. There’s the un-dead world of Umbral that also awaits if you die.

Getting in to Umbral doesn’t always mean you need to die and untimely death – once you have the Umbral Lamp you can freely explore both worlds. This is done well and stirred up fond memories of the Legacy of Kain games, where you will fluctuate between alternate realities.

And speaking of dying, you will. A lot.

Lords of the Fallen (2023) is a ‘Souls’ game. One where you can expect to be challenged by even the weakest of enemies.

You’ll wield your weapons and collect bits to keep in your inventory, but the melee combat mechanism was too clunky and slowed for my liking. This also gave the game the advantage over you.

Going back to weird graphic anomalies, unfortunately, Lords of the Fallen (2023) has them in abundance.

From environmental pre-loading oddities through to getting myself stuck on what seemed to be an invisible environmental object, happened way too often to ignore.

Lords of the Fallen (2023), like it’s predecessor title of the same name is lost potential, it should have been a legendary epic game that garnered a serious fan base.

The lore is tight, narrative engaging, but it fails on core gameplay.

While the game is super challenging, and made more challenging by weird glitches, Lords of the Fallen (2023) is still a game to consider, once it goes a clearance sale.

CI Games invite players, once again, to take potshots at unsuspecting enemies with Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2.

The sequel to the well-received Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts, itself a continuation of the Sniper: Ghost Warrior series, sticks with the same format of having a series of open-world mission areas.

CI Games tried a huge open-world in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 with mixed results. Saying that, each of the Ghost Warrior Contracts 2’s mission areas is very large.

The story is as throwaway as they tend to be and not very memorable. Players take on the role of Raven and contract sniper working for an unknown agency instigating a regime change in the MiddleEast.

Directed by his operator, Raven must infiltrate the mission environments and locate and dispatch his targets. Missions have multiple objectives. Usually, there are multiple targets as well as other multi-part objectives that are a little more complex than just lining up the cross-hairs.

Some of the objectives are not really what I’d call sniping operations and more like black ops missions, to be honest.

The game has five huge environments plus one training area.

The missions are classified as either Long Shot or Classic. The three Long Shot missions require players to reach the sniping point, dispatching or avoiding enemies on the way, and then taking out the targets from an exceptionally long distance.

The two Classic missions give players the freedom to take out targets up close, if necessary, and infiltrate deep into enemy territory to complete objectives.

The target / objective areas are marked on the map. Here, depending on the mission type, players will usually find an overwatch position to scan the site for targets and objectives using binoculars. As each objective is completed, players have the opportunity to exfiltrate at various locations on the map and upload the mission data.

As well as the main targets and objectives, some maps have optional bounty missions that involve identifying and dispatching additional targets. Challenges can be completed for extra rewards.

To carry out missions, Raven is equipped with a sniper rifle, a secondary weapon, and a sidearm. He can also carry gadgets and equipment such as medkits, a drone, a portable gun turret, and, of course, a selection of grenades. Oh, and some C4 for when being discreet is really off the table.

The game does still cling to one of the mechanics of its predecessor that really shouldn’t be there. The Raven’s mask view is like a radar system that can be used to better interpret the surroundings.

It’s an upgradable ability that I think would be better explained as the instinct of an experienced sniper than an implausible hi-tech bit of equipment.

All the weapons are customisable and can be upgraded using parts purchased with in-game currency. Additional weapons can also be bought with in-game currency. Secondary weapons include assault rifles and a cheekily named compound bow called a Ram-Bow, complete with an inscription that’ll be familiar to fans of a certain 1982 movie.

By adding silencers and muzzle-flare suppressors, and will and choosing from a selection of optics, Raven’s arsenal can be tuned to taste and the mission requirements.

The game takes a very R-rated path with the depiction of bullets impacting a human body.

Slow-motion bullet cam animations are triggered for particularly interesting shots, the frequency of which can be adjusted in the options. These animations are not for the faint-hearted, especially the headshots which show skulls shattering and skin flapping as the target’s head explodes.

Very gross or very satisfying, maybe both.

Similarly, body shots show bullet entry with the bullet exiting with a wake of blood. Shots to arms a leg, depending on the ammo can result in appendages being several and flying off in all directions. The game makes no judgment nor does it excuse the actions of a hired gun.

Gore aside, the physics of sniping targets is very well done, especially on the high difficulty levels without the aiming assistance. The range finder needs to be adjusted to the target distance, with wind and bullet drop factored in to make the shot.

On the easy setting there’s a red dot to help. The range can be determined using binoculars or a figure height depiction through the optics.

The knife, bow and silenced pistol allow for mid-range and close-quarters stealth kills. If you are resorting to grenades and assault rifles things had gone south and are likely to continue to go south. Contracts 2 is a game that rewards careful infiltration and punishes a gung-ho approach to stealth.

On the higher difficulties levels alerting the enemy to your position is a death sentence. On the easier settings, you can still expect mortar fire if your location is exposed.

Enemy AI isn’t bad but seems to scale up in resilience rather than strategy on the higher difficulties.

I found crafty enemy sniper and the heavily armoured enemy soldiers to be the trickiest.

Dispatching an entire outpost using a silenced pistol and melee knife attack is very satisfying. Stealthily approaching a lone enemy gives players the choice of instantly killing them or interrogating them so you can find out the location of other enemy soldiers.

Contracts 2 further refines the series.

But it’s not just the gameplay mechanics that get a boost. Long loading times are now a thing of the past compared to its predecessor.

The shonky overdramatic briefings have been replaced by a two-way conversation with an operator that has an unintentionally comedic tendency to be passive-aggressive. Also, instead of the weird sci-fi-looking mask in the last game, your sniper is wearing a facemask that looks a little more realistic.

The game does a really good job of scaling the difficulty.

The easy Markman difficulty level is great for folks that want to go in like Johnny Rambo popping headshots without consequence.

This easy mode provides a red dot to help dialing in the range and consideration for bullet drop. At the other end of the four difficulty settings is Deadeye, with realistic sniping mechanics and deadly enemies. There’s no help available for aiming and there’s limit HUD assistance.

On the whole, the environments are well designed, offering a variety of different areas, from rocky canyons to settlements, to sneak through and infiltrate. The climbing is a bit off, with designated climbing areas and other rocks that whilst looking climbable, are not.

The game offers lots of nice vistas over target areas.

The visuals are very good, offering an immersive experience.

The mission takes place at different times showing off the game’s great use of lighting.CI has stuck with Crytek’s aging CryEngine for Contracts 2. As with the last game, this means visible jagged edges in the distance, no matter how high the anti-aliasing is set.

You get used to it, though and it’s only a minor niggle.

The game has a disappointingly high amount of day one DLC that’ll more double the cost of the game if you were to purchase it all.

Most of it is superfluous skins, but there are a few nice weapons that would have been nice to have in the base game instead of as premium DLC.

The only thing that’s missing is an editor mode, whereby players can customise the game picking new targets and target locations, similar to that of the recent Hitman games. This would expand the game. Maybe something for part 3.

Overall, Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is a great game.

It caters for players with zero patience that just want to get right into the combat as well as would-be assassins, with nerves of steel, that are prepared to wait for that perfect shot.

With Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts CI Games have  taken a leaf out of Hitman’s playbook abandoning the open-world of the last game in favour of a series of well-realised environments.

As fun as past Sniper: Ghost Warrior games are, finely polished works, they are not. Fortunately, CI have pulled out the stops with Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts to give us a game that can stand head-and-shoulders with similar contemporary first-person-shooters.

The visuals are a huge improvement from previous games the maps, models and lighting all look great. The environments look very realistic with tall grass and foliage not only looking great, as it sways in the wind, but also providing some great cover.

Whilst the plot, explained via jump-cut visuals narrated by your very English accented handler, makes little sense, it does point you in the right direction for lots of long-distance shooting. It’s all, apparently, going down in Siberia with dodgy deals, genetic manipulation and a prime minister about to fire missiles at China. Each and every one of the bad guys responsible, of course, deserving a bullet to the cranium.

The game, like the others in the series, uses Crytek’s CryEngine. But with your sniper, now equipped with a high-tech mask and a special, impact-absorbent suit, the series seems to have taken a sci-fi turn, not unlike Crytek’s own Crysis games. As useful as mask mode sensor-vision and being able to drop down from heights is, I’d soon the game kept to being a bit more grounded.

The sniper, called Seeker by his handler, is equipped with a sniper rifle, assault rifle and a handgun. The handgun is very useful when there’s a risk of getting up-close and personal for some close quarters combat. The use of the assault rifle usually means that things have gone south and likely to get a lot worse.

Your choice of weapon very much influences your game.

High powered rifles will, generally, take down an enemy with one shot to the head or chest, but are loud and will alert the enemy to your location. This means that you need to identify all your targets and fire in quick succession before relocating. Stick around once discovered and you’ll end up in a rain of mortar fire. A well-suppressed, low powered rifle will need headshots for a one-shot kill, but with careful shooting, you can clear the field without alerting anyone.

Weapons are customisable in a similar way as in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint’s Gunsmith. Players can upgrade them with better sights and optics, extended magazines, suppressors and even a camouflage paintjob.

Each contract has a number of main objectives, required to complete the assignment. After each objective is complete, players get the opportunity to head to an ex-filtration point to upload the details, effectively saving the game. There are also challenges and collectibles that earn extra cash and special challenge tokens.

The game maps are wonderfully detailed, packed full of places to explore and high points from which to take out enemies. The game gives player plenty of options and ways to take out targets. No two playthroughs are going to be the same.

The environments range from snowy tundra to lush woodland. There are five contract maps in total, plus a training area. The maps are quite big and but some do have fast travel points to minimise back tracking.

Dotted around the maps are ammo caches to replenish supplies and swap out weapons. Looting corpses can also yield ammo and cash. A sniper with no bullets in not a lot of good.

As a sniper, you really need to find a spot high and a good distance from your targets. Using binoculars, targets can be highlighted and their distance determined. From the sniper scope, the crosshairs can be adjusted to take into consideration bullet-drop. There’s a visual cue to show the horizontal offset required for wind adjustments as well.

Some areas have jammers that stop the Seeker from targeting enemies. Shooting a panel on the base of the rotating jammer will put it out of action.
Be careful to avoid mines in the minefields. Using the Seeker’s mask mode, you can spot mines to avoid them, or shoot them to set off, for a less stealthy approach. You can also examine footprints and follow them through the mines.

Whilst most targets are just common grunts, there are heavies to contend with and crafty fellow snipers. CCTV camera can also alert guard of your position as will getting caught in a searchlight. Remote sentry guns are also in play to be avoided or destroyed.

If the enemy does discover you; they will start to flank you. Snipers are deadly if they have line-of-sight, as are sentry guns. It’s best to keep moving and wait until things have calmed down rather than double-down, going in like Rambo.

Certain areas trigger optional bounty targets that can also be dispatched. It’s not just a case of popping open a head for long distance, proof of the kill needs to then be obtained from the corpse. This then turns the tables making the player the hunted party until they get clear of the bounty area. There are extra points to be had if you manage to take out the rival sniper before they get you.

Successful hits and optional challenges award money and challenge tokens that can be traded for upgraded weapons and equipment. Cashing in challenge tokens, players can purchase very special kit like drones.

There are a few autosave areas around the map, but they are few and far between. You have to be careful, if you’ve not found one else you end up right back where you started.

The game has three difficulty settings. The lowest setting is ridiculously easy with the middle setting offering a moderate challenge and the highest difficulty being pretty hard.

Whilst not as gruesome as Sniper Elite’s X-ray bullet cam, Contracts’ slow-motion headshot cam comes a good second showing heads bursting like melons and brain-chunks going everywhere. It’s not pretty. Once the shock value has worn off, you’ll probably find yourselves switching down the frequency of these gory slo-mo shots in order to get on with proceedings.

The game does a good job of introducing the mechanics to players, but as I progressed there were a few times when I had no idea where I was supposed to be going. I’m not sure if it was a glitch, but there were no indications on the map either. It was only when, by chance, I passed a trigger point that my handler gave me some guidance.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts may not be everybody’s cup of tea. The large map and crafty enemies require a strategic approach- running and gunning will not do. Players with the patience to wait for opportunities to take out targets from a safe distance and enjoy stealth gameplay mechanics will have a lot of fun.

With plenty of challenges and optional activities the game has loads of replay value.

CI Games, the developer and publisher of the acclaimed Sniper Ghost Warrior and The Lords of the Fallen franchises announces today the creation of its publishing label dedicated to indie developers, United Label.

Created in 2002, CI Games has become a recognized independent player in video games, with worldwide operations and key franchises, selling over 7M units of the Sniper Ghost Warrior franchise and 2M units of Lords of the Fallen.

“We are bringing our existing publishing capabilities to talented developers. We started this process with one of our own IPs, by giving the entire project of Lords of the Fallen 2 to Defiant in New York. We are now delighted to start United Label, announcing the first 4 highly-promising games: Röki from Polygon Treehouse, Eldest Souls from Fallen Flag Studios, Tails of Iron from Odd Bug Studios and Horae from Lunaris Iris. United Label will pursue its expansion by gathering creative talents, offering a structure to success and building long-term relationships with developers.” says Marek Tyminski, CEO of CI Games.

Co-founded by two ex-Guerilla Games Art Directors, Polygon Treehouse is bringing a bright new approach to Point & Click Adventure games with Röki. “We created a dark and contemporary fairytale with deep narrative and puzzles, say Tom Jones & Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, co-founder of Polygon Treehouse. Working with United Label enables us to be part of a creative and dedicated team.”

Eldest Souls is a pixel art RPG adventure game from Fallen Flag Studios. “This is our first game but United Label believed in the game and the team from day-one, they are supporting us to reach our ambitions”, says Francesco Barsotti, co-founder of Fallen Flag Studios.

Tails of Iron is the new game of Odd Bug Studios, the creators of The Lost Bear. “Tails of Iron is a 2D cinematic combat adventure with hand-crafted combat encounters. Joining United Label allows us to accelerate our development as a studio, and to plan for a large reach at release”, says Daniel Robinson, team leader at Odd Bug Studios.

Horae is a roguelike RPG with an original combat system. ”Our goal is to offer a new take on the genre by deeply combining stories, beauty of graphics, and treasures through intense gameplay. Working with United Label came naturally, as they are looking, as we do, at bringing a new approach to existing genres.” says Victor le Fay, co-founder at Lunaris Iris.

Röki and Eldest Souls will be released in 2019, when Tails of Iron and Horae will come in 2020.

CI Games (WSE: CIG) announced today that they will partner with developer Defiant Studios to deliver the anticipated sequel to Lords of the Fallen.

Lords of the Fallen (released on consoles and PC in 2014) is a challenging action RPG that follows the journey of Harkyn, a convicted criminal who takes up arms against the demonic Rhogar army. The game features fast paced combat, blending powerful magic alongside a complex and satisfying melee combat system. It has sold over 2 million units to date. CI Games is dedicated to delivering a quality second title for fans of the IP, and partnering with Defiant is an important step towards this goal.

Defiant Studios is a privately held, independent studio composed of veteran staff with proven track records in developing top-selling AAA games. The company was founded in New York City in 2016 by the former studio head and game director of Avalanche Studios New York, a team that previously developed multi-million selling titles such as Just Cause 3. The partnership demonstrates an important component of CI Games’ new strategy — collaborating with strong external teams to deliver quality gaming experiences with the player in mind.

“We talked to a number of globally respected studios that had shown a strong interest in making the next LotF, and received several solid pitches. We finally decided to move forward with Defiant because we were impressed with their game concept, production expertise, and the pedigree of their developers,” said CI Games Chief Executive Officer, Marek Tymiński. “Defiant is made up of some the industry’s most talented creators, and we are thrilled to have them create the sequel to LotF. We look forward to bringing their next big game to the global market on consoles and PC.”

On the collaboration between CI and Defiant, Founder and Managing Director of Defiant Studios, David Grijns said, “We have been talking with CI Games for several months now, and went through a detailed process of getting to know one another’s expectations and motivations in regards to Lords of the Fallen 2. CI games will continue to develop projects internally with a smaller and leaner development team, as per its new direction announced in June 2017. But the partnership demonstrates the publisher’s commitment to fostering relationships with third-party developers, preserving their creative freedom and delivering quality titles for their community. The LotF 2 collaboration marks the beginning of a new chapter in the publisher’s gaming portfolio.

Tymiński emphasised, “Signing the next LotF with Defiant is a very important step for CI Games as a publisher. We look forward to continue teaming up with third-party developers to help bring their projects to global audiences, and are invested in building long term relationships. For the past several months we have been in discussions with many talented studios from around the world, and will soon have more to share about the outcomes of those discussions. For the series’ third outing developer CI Games takes Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 all open world.

As Marine Captain Jon North, you are send into war-torn Georgia to play havoc with the local separatists on behalf of Uncle Sam. More importantly for Jon, however, is the search for his capturedbrother, Robert, who has been seen in the area.

One look at Sniper Ghost Warrior 3’s open world all I could think was Ghost Recon Wildlands, a game inspired by Ubisoft’s own Far Cry games- the first-person series of which probably serves as a better comparison.

Ghost Warrior 3 has, unfortunately, come out far too close to Ubisoft’s so much more polished, similarly-named,open-world addition to their Ghost Recon franchise. And that’s a shame. Whilst they are two totally different games, comparisons between the two are irresistible.

But whilst Ghost Recon is all about the co-op multiplayer, for now, in Ghost Warrior 3, we only have the single-player campaign game- CI Games being on a promise to release a multiplayer module free-of-charge at a later date. If you pre-ordered the game, you got the season pass for free, unlocking the first single-player add-on, an extra campaign featuring a female sniper entitled Escape of Lydia.

The Sniper Ghost Warrior games are an often overlooked pedigree. The lack of a big advertising budget is probably the only thing wrong with the series.The previous games have filled a void as a modern-day sniper game. It’s only real peer being Rebellion’s WW2 themed Sniper Elite series.

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3’s gameplay is based around a series of missions which are played by sniping, being a stealthy ghost, or as a gung-ho warrior. See how they got that title? These are the same traits reflected in the upgrade skill tree.

You honed sniper skills are reflected by your scout mode. When activated, not only can you see the enemy highlighted, but you can also see areas that you can climb. If there’s any about, you can also see footprints, allowing you to do a bit of tracking.

You can carry a sniper rifle, a rifle and a sidearm, all of which can be ungraded in your base, providing you have the resources. You can also equip extra ordinance, such as grenades and even a drone a la Wildlands. By looting the bodies of your victims, or finding caches in the field, you obtain the resources to fashion bullets and other equipment.

The bullet cam gives you an extreme sense of satisfaction as you watch your victim buck and buckle as the bullet passes through them. Not as graphic (satisfying) as the X-ray view of shattering innards that Rebellion’s Sniper gives you, but a nice touch, all the same.

With main missions and side missions, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 follows the open-world model to a tee. From your home hub you can adjust your loadout, craft equipment, buy ammo and launch missions. You have a vehicle waiting outside to take you to your goal or you can fast travel via a network of discoverable points around the map.

The initial loading time is pitifully slow. I swear I had cassette-based ZX Spectrum games that loaded faster, back in the day. It took so long I thought it had crashed. It takes about five minutes to load- even on a PS4 Pro. The only advantage of this is that you don’t have to put up with any other loading screens, unless to change region, that is.

The three regions are fairly big, together, probably not as big as Wildlands’ Bolivia, but they do offer a diverse set on environments to play in from jungle to snow. Be prepared for another five-minute wait as you transition between them.

There was a time when the CryEngine logo at the beginning of a game pretty much guaranteed some decent visuals. Whilst Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 looks very nice, they’ve not really strayed far from the generic output of the game engine. Not when you consider the much more visually superior Prey uses the same engine. Ghost Warrior 3’s visuals are about on per with the PC version of the four-year-old Crysis 3.

Good news, though, anyone that experienced some choppy graphics in the beta will be please to know that the game runs like butter on a PS4 Pro. The game isn’t without its issues, I had to put up with a number of crashes during my playthrough – something I don’t expect on a PS4.

I really enjoyed the previous games in the series, and I enjoyed this one as well. I thought that the open world really wasn’t exploited enough, and almost wished for the more intimately controlled experience of past entries.

It’s not that Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 isn’t a good game, it’s just so derivative, it feels like the gaming equivalent of a direct-to-video action movie. If you go in expecting something that breaks the mold you are going to be disappointed. If you want to play something that does what it says on the tin, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is it. Dependable, a bit predictable, rough around the edges, but still good fun to play.

CI Games, developer of the Sniper: Ghost Warrior series and Lords of the Fallen, explores the dark depths of a slaughterhouse shown in a never-before-seen map location in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3.

Located deep in the Georgian mountains, an American prisoner is being held captive in an old slaughterhouse repurposed by separatists to be a site of body disposal. American Marine Jon North needs to use his skills to rescue the prisoner quickly and efficiently while he’s still alive.

Armed with a variety of weapons and equipment, Jon North’s combat prowess is fully realized when properly prepared for the mission. New to the series, the aerial drone with the proper upgrades provide an advantage before entering the area. Using Sniper skills to pick off lone separatists on watch, and then using Ghost skills to take out the enemy stealthily with the trusty knife helps create and easy way of infiltration and exfiltration.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 tells the story of brotherhood, faith and betrayal in the most complete sniper experience ever. Take the role of an American sniper named Jonathan North, who is dropped into enemy territory in northern Georgia, nearby Russian borders. Explore large open-world maps with dynamic weather and a day and night cycle that actually impacts play and decisions. Customize weapon equipment, accessories, vehicles and a drone, and utilize the three pillars of gameplay to your liking: Sniper, Ghost and Warrior.

Sniper: Ghost Warriors 3 is due for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April the 4th, 2017.

Previously available only for press and members of the industry, the first-ever Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 presentation has allowed to be made public (trailer above). Narrated by Jess Lebow, a Lead Narrative Designer at CI Games, it provides an extended look into the next big step for the Warsaw, Poland-based studio.

Strengthened by the enthusiastic reception of the demo at E3 2015, CI Games is now getting ready for this year’s Gamescom, the biggest and the most important games convention in Europe. The studio will be presenting a completely new hands-off demo of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 in a private meeting room, as well as providing the previous hands-on demo to the public for the first time ever.

The Sniper Ghost Warrior franchise is CI Games’ most popular, having sold more than 5.5 million titles to date. The third entry into the series will be its first full-fledged triple-A title, featuring open-ended wartime environments and a non-linear narrative to give snipers the freedom and choice necessary to execute the advanced missions that tactically-minded gamers yearn for.

Hot on the heels of CI Games’ first triple-A production, the successful Lords of the Fallen, SGW3 is the studio’s most ambitious title yet. It is being created from the ground up by an experienced development team led by former Marine and CI Games creative director Paul B. Robinson, who, in addition to serving in combat, has an extensive 20-year career in game development. Veteran game designer and writer Jess Lebow, who has worked on a number of high profile games including League of Legends, Far Cry, and Guild Wars also serves as the Lead Narrative Designer for SGW3.

We have yet to hear of an official release date.
