Polyphony Digital Inc., the maker of Gran Turismo and the FIA, have announced that the ‘FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships’ 2021 Series will begin on Wednesday, 21st April 2021.

All of the 2021 action will take place online, with the fastest competitors having a chance to showcase their talents during some special broadcasts throughout the year.

The FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships is where Esports meets motor sport creating ultra-realistic and exciting racing within Gran Turismo Sport. Created in conjunction with the governing body of world motor sport, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the championships began in 2018 and are open to anyone (over 18 and from a participating country) with a copy of the game and a PS Plus subscription.

Players can enter two different series: the Nations Cup is an individual competition with players competing on behalf of their countries; in the Manufacturer Series, players compete on behalf of their chosen manufacturer.

The winners of both are honoured each year at the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony alongside the champions of real-world motor sport. Last year, a dominant season by Japanese racer Takuma Miyazono saw him crowned Nations Cup Champion as well as being part of the victorious Team Subaru in the Manufacturer Series alongside Mikail Hizal (TUR) and Daniel Solis (USA).

Following an exciting World Tour event in Sydney, the remainder of the 2020 action took place online, with some fiercely contested Regional Finals preceding a stunning three-day World Finals event. The FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships achieved significant growth with over two million race entries from more than 159,000 competitors. There were 120 million views of championship content on our own channels with followers growing by almost half-a-million people. The scene is set for an even more exciting 2021 season that comprises the following elements:

ONLINE STAGE 1 – runs from 21 April and concludes on 26 June 2021. Competitors from around the world will race online over 10 rounds of the Manufacturer Series (taking place on Wednesdays) and 10 rounds of the Nations Cup (on Saturdays).

‘WORLD SERIES’ 1 & 2 – this period will also see the global top 16 Nations Cup and top 12 Manufacturer Series competitors (initially selected from the 2020 World Finals) taking part in two new ‘World Series’ events that will be broadcast on Sunday, 6 June and Sunday, 11 July 2021 respectively.

‘WORLD SERIES SHOWDOWN’ – The end of Online Stage 1 gives a chance to its best 16 Nations Cup competitors to challenge for a place in the World Series and World Finals against the 16 elite players who contested the first two World Series events. At the same time, team duties will return for the Manufacturer Series with 12 teams of three racers contesting their ‘Showdown’ with World Finals points at stake. The Manufacturer Series World Series Showdown will be broadcast on Saturday, 21 August and the Nations Cup on Sunday, 22 August 2021.

ONLINE STAGE 2 – Running from 7 July until 25 September 2021 a further 10 rounds each for the Nations Cup and Manufacturer Series provide a chance for competitors to win their place in December’s World Finals.

‘WORLD SERIES’ 3 & 4 – A new-look elite group of players will contest two more race events set to be broadcast on 3 October and 14 November 2021.

WORLD FINALS – Three days of World Finals will be broadcast on Friday 3, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 December 2021. Friday features the support series, Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup. Saturday’s Manufacturer Series final will again see 12 manufacturer teams of three drivers contesting a series of races. Sunday’s finale will be the Nations Cup World Final with the 16 established World Series competitors challenged by 16 new racers who have won their place in Online Stage 2.

“Due to the effect of Covid-19, we are missing the atmosphere of our World Series Events and the opportunity to meet our wonderful competitors directly, but we’re lucky that we can still test new ideas and continue to grow the FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships even in this online environment,” explains Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

“We’re excited by the new format for the series this year and, with new developments in our broadcast production integrating new technologies, we are certain that we can show everyone even more exciting racing action. After three weeks of intense competition and a high-energy final, Nathan ‘Fel Peon U’ Edward Basser was crowned the inaugural National Champion of Red Bull Solo Q, over the weekend.

The Australian National Finals of Red Bull Solo Q, the official 1v1 League of Legends (LoL) tournament, culminated on Saturday in an intense competition that saw 16 finalists duke it out for a range of prizes including a place in the Chiefs Esports Club’s Academy Program, coaching from The Chiefs Esports League of Legends team, and the opportunity to represent Australia at the Red Bull Solo Q World Finals.

Celebrating an outstanding victory, Nathan ‘Fel Peon U’ Edward Basser asserted himself National Champion against the other 15 finalists and over 450 entrants of the tournament. In an effort to accumulate the most points players were to be the first to eliminate their opponent (First blood!), reach 100 minion score, or destroy the opponents tower. ‘Fel Peon U’ had a rough climb to the top, losing one match in each best of three played in the series, before clean-sweeping the Grand Final in a perfect 3 – 0 against runner up Joel ‘Randomact’ Skewes.

Nathan ‘Fel Peon U’ Edward Basser will now join the Chiefs ESC Academy Program, where for three months they’ll receive fortnightly one-on-one coaching sessions with Coach, Chris ‘SeeEl’ Lee and the opportunity to train with a Chiefs ESC League of Legends player.

The program will look to prepare them for the Red Bull Solo Q World Finals, where they will face off against National Finalists from over 35 participating countries, for the chance to claim the Grand Final title and win a League of Legends All-Star experience.

The official 1v1 League of Legends (LoL) tournament is coming to Australia for the first time as Red Bull Solo Q registrations open today.

Last year, the competition ran in 29 countries – branded as Red Bull Player One – and saw 25,000 registrants battling for the title. This season, with Australia joining over 35 countries participating in the circuit, will we see an Aussie on the finals stage?

Red Bull Solo Q puts a twist on a typical League of Legends match, pitting player against player in a bracket of 1v1 duels. The first player to earn ‘First blood!’, destroy the opponents´ tower or reach a 100-minion score wins the duel. The Australian winner will earn a spot on the global stage at the Red Bull Solo Q World Finals in Frankfurt, Germany this December (2020), along with an invitation to join The Chiefs Esports Club League of Legends Academy Program.

The Solo Q Australian Champion will join the Chiefs ESC Academy Program, where for three months they’ll receive fortnightly, one-on-one coaching sessions from the League of Legends Team Coach, Chris ‘SeeEl’ Lee as well as a Chiefs team member. The program will aim to help bootcamp them in preparation for the Red Bull Solo Q World Finals.

As part of the partnership with League of Legends Global Esports Events, the winner of Red Bull Solo Q World Finals will get to experience the 2020 League of Legends All-Star Event firsthand! The champion will participate in the League’s annual year-end celebration alongside some of the game’s biggest esports athletes and streaming personalities, playing in special showcases and attending exclusive parties.

Top athletes and many more well-known faces from the LoL scene, including The Chiefs, will make special appearances throughout the tournament. You can catch the likes of Thien and Claire as they share some tips and tricks to help players level up their game ahead of the tournament. The two day tournament will see NZ celebrities and sports stars including the Vodafone Warriors, All Blacks, surfing star Elliot Paerata-Reid and top musicians like Ji Fraser from SIX60 and Hip Hop star Kings go head to head against fan players in rounds of global phenomenon Fortnite.

Whether it be gaming at home or through broadcast, people are increasingly enjoying the competitive entertainment of esports. Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN will field a driver line-up full of stars in this weekend’s esports events. Antonio Giovinazzi will perform double duty as he takes on the Veloce “Not the GP” Series alongside Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, before racing in Formula One’s Virtual Grand Prix in pairing with Juan Manuel Correa.

Antonio will be looking forward to the race, aiming to bounce back from the disappointment of two weeks ago, when a good result was nullified by a network issue. By doubling up on this weekend’s races, the Italian ace will bring his talent to the extremely competitive scene of the Veloce Series. Having finished fifth in his first F1 Virtual Grand Prix, he will be expecting to compete at the front.

Courtois, part of the Belgium team which finished in third place in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is an accomplished simracer and has starred in both the Veloce Series and the F1 Virtual GPs. The Belgian makes his debut in an official Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN entry and, with some very positive results in his first outings, can be a force to be reckoned with in one of the strongest team line-ups on the grid.

After making his first appearance for Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN in the Chinese Grand Prix, Juan Manuel Correa will return to partner Giovinazzi in the F1 Virtual Grand Prix. The talented Ecuadorian-American is on a steady improvement curve in the F1 2019 game and will certainly fight for a place in the top 10 on Sunday.

The Veloce “Not the GP” race will take place on Saturday, May 2nd, starting at 8pm BST, while the F1 Virtual Grand Prix will be broadcasted live from the Gfinity Esports Arena from 6:00pm BST on Sunday May 3, 2020.

In addition to these stars, the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Esports regulars will be in action in the F1 Esports Pro Exhibition race, which will precede the Virtual Grand Prix and is set to begin at 5:00pm BST. Ace driver Daniel Bereznay will aim to improve on his third-place finish in China, going for the win in Interlagos. He will race alongside a debutant team-mate, 17-year-old racer Bardia Broumand from Iran.

Esports tournament organiser LetsPlay.Live (LPL) has once again partnered with NZ Football to bring kiwis the chance to represent NZ on the global stage at the 2020 FIFA eNations Cup NZ Football Qualifier!

Kiwi FIFA 20 players from across the country are encouraged to sign-up and compete in the open qualifiers being played online on March 19th, 2020 (PS4 and Xbox). Whether you’re the best player in your flat, or if you’re a tournament regular, this qualifier is free and open to FIFA players of all skill levels, and we encourage everyone to sign-up and give it a go.

Following the open online qualifier, the top four kiwi FIFA players in the country – two PS4 players and two Xbox players – will then be flown to LPL Studios in Auckland, NZ. Here they will compete in a final match broadcast live on March 26th to determine the top two players – one per console – for the chance to represent NZ in the FIFA eNations Cup Qualifiers this April.

Following a successful National Championship operated by LPL in partnership with NZ Football in 2019, NZ Football’s Competition Manager Keegan McCauley is happy to see the tournament back for another year. “Not only are we delighted that virtual football is being recognised as an official sport globally, NZ Football are thrilled to be working with FIFA and LPL two years running to support pathways for esports athletes to represent New Zealand on the world stage.”

Ultimate Feast, one of the ultimate World of Tanks (WoT) Teams that took part in the WoT Blitz Twister Champs over the weekend (November 9th and 10th 2019) in Belarus.

World of Tanks is a online massive multiplayer war game where you team up, or go it solo and strategise, build up your tank arsenal and face off with likeminded opponents.

The WoT Blitz is the topping on the war gaming cake where the best of the best global teams battle it out against eachother for the top spot on an almost literal battlefield.

Thanks to our mates at WoT Shane from STG was able to have a chat with Kam, a 20 year old Australian player, from Canberra, and Captain of Ultimate Feast team who took on the world’s best over the weekend.

Ultimate Feast – World of Tanks Blitz Championship

Shane: Hi Kam, thanks for chatting to us here at STG. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you rose to be the Captain of Ultimate Feast?

Kam: Hi STG, I’m very glad to be able to chat with you guys. I’m often known as Maddox, the clan leader of the clan FEAST in the Asia server. Since I’m also the founder of the clan and I’ve been in charge of most of the things within the clan ever since it’s founded, I think it’s only natural for me to step up to represent the clan and the team as the captain of Ultimate FEAST.

Shane: Why is World of Tank your gaming weapon of choice? What attracted you to the game in the first place?

Kam: A very good friend of mine introduced the game to me a few years ago, and I was stunned by the variety of tanks it presents and also the unique game mechanics it presented. It lead me to do a lot of personal research about the tanks I’m driving, and by the time I realised it I was already completely hooked up to this game. 

Shane: Your favourite tank is the FV215b heavy tank. Why that particular one?

Kam: The FV215b was my first ever Tier X tank I’ve ever researched and bought. I wasn’t particularly good back then so I kept losing in that tank. However it inspired me to research deeper into the game mechanics, and it had driven me into finding ways to improve my gameplay. It’s now the tank that I drive in most of the time. It’s also a very strong tank nowadays.

Shane: What do you do in preparation of the WOT Blitz Champs?

Kam: We’ve been training our teamwork between our line-up quite a bit recently, and we’ve also been researching our opponents to see if we can discover any possibility of beating them. It’s a tedious process but it’s definitely the will to win that’s been driving us this far.

Shane: It’s hard to predict what the outcome will be of this years WOT Blitz, however, what is Ultimate Feats’ plan after the Championship?

Kam: Our plans after the championship? There’s definitely going to be reflections. No matter winning or losing, there’s always mistakes that will be made. Our plan is to review those mistakes, refine ourselves, and prepare ourselves better for the next chance before it comes.

The NRL has partnered with LetsPlay.Live (LPL), an Australasian esports media company that develops, hosts and broadcasts esports tournaments and content, to deliver the League Royale featuring Fortnite at the 2019 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final.

Fans of Fortnite will be able to engage additionally at the NRL Fan Fest, held in Martin Place in Sydney from Wednesday 2nd October to Friday 4th October.

After successfully collaborating in Auckland last year to promote the 2018 Post Season Test Matches, the NRL and LPL are excited to work together again to bring something different to the 2019 NRL Grand Final. Playing the Fortnite Battle Royale mode, fans will compete for prizes valued over $18,000 prior to the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final kick-off. Prizes include cash, tickets, flights, merchandise and premium experiences at State of Origin in Adelaide in June 2020.

“We continue to develop and evolve our Grand Final week and this esports activation will add to the fan experience at NRL Fan Fest and on Grand Final day,” said Andrew Abdo, Chief Commercial Officer of the NRL. “Giving our fans the opportunity to play in front of ANZ Stadium, to be broadcast across Twitch, the NRL network and on the stadium big screens and to play for prizes that include our incredible behind the scenes experiences at Origin in Adelaide next year is an opportunity not to be missed,” he added.
