It’s a ‘Stick Up’, from Ring who has previously released the very fine and super reliable Ring Doorbell Camera 3.

Built for in-home or outside the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro can be placed on a flat surface or wall / ceiling mounted.

And if you decide to prop it on a wall, Ring provides the bits you’ll need in the box.

Using 3D visual technology the Stick Up Cam Pro records to the cloud in 1080p and has dual array mics for clearer, crisper two way speaking.

The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro views your surroundings in 110 degrees, near to a wide shot, and will of course detect movement when armed.

To use the camera, you do need the app.

If you already have a Ring Doorbell you’ll be familiar with the setup.

Ultimately, it is easy as with a few prompts and guides to get you through and get your Stick Up Cam Pro connected to your home’s WIFI.

It is also via the app that you’ll receive alerts of movement in your home.

When I am out of the house it’s super handy to not only know that my place is protected by surveillance video, but I can also keep the dog in check.

This is where the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro still needs a bit of work though on what it is detecting.

As my dog roams about the house, I’ll get alerts that a Person has been detected. Having used and tested (and reviewed) other indoor security cameras over the years, I have gotten used to the camera being able to ascertain what it is detecting, i.e. animal or human.

So for the first day of real use away from the home it was a bit of a fright to see a multitude of alerts that there is a person detected in my living room.

Of course, it was the dog.

If you are using the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro outside the home this sense of detection will be sorely needed as neighbourhood cats and birds may trigger that ‘Person’ alert.

Nonetheless, it does detect, so it does its job well.

The app is where you’ll see all of your recordings. Super clear and can be zoomed in for a closer look and will also record sound.

To retain recordings in the cloud you’ll need to have a the paid subscription.

You can freely check the live feed at any time.

And if something untoward is going on at your place, activate the mic icon to talk, or set off the built-in alarm.

The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro has got it as far as video and audio quality. For some needing to buy a subscription to store your recordings may seem like an add-on expense. It is, and it is also kind of necessary to, but you do get a free trial.

The camera itself is stationary and does not swivel and is mains powered. You can use a battery but that is sold separately.

In all, the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro has a budget friendly price-point and you sure do get quality surveillance. If you go for the cloud subs you can download your recordings at any time.

It’s an effective and cost friendly measure to keep not only your place in check, but also your kids and pets.

I even used it to see if I had left an item on the couch that I thought I had misplaced on the way to the office.

The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro can be integrated with smart assistants too, Alexa or Google.

Make movie night or game time something extraordinary with Nanoleaf 4D.

The Nanoleaf 4D kit is a bendy lightbar that goes on the rear of your screen and works alongside a camera which views the colour spectrums.  But before you can light it up there is some DIY.

In the box there’s a few bits. The camera and camera mount. The light bar, which you can get in 65 or 85 inches. The corner mounts, your controller box and of course AC adaptor.Depending on how your TV is mounted and the size of your screen will stipulate how easy it is to set this up.  If you’ve wall mounted your screen then likely you’ll need to take it off the wall.  Mine is not wall mounted so this was easier. But having a 85 inch TV added a wee bit of trickiness when I was placing the lightbar around it.

Nanoleaf supply sticky foam for the corner brackets and the lightbar itself has double-sided tape.  Once it’s all set in place you’ll need the Nanoleaf app for Android or iOS.  Here’s the painful part.

As experienced with other Nanoleaf products, which are great, the app is not so great during setup.  Connecting the Nanoleaf 4D to your home’s WiFi will test your patience. Many times over.  After the repeated, usual (and expected) connection failures and error messages it finally got there.

The controller box has three modes, Camera, Play (which is basically an always on display mode) and Music where it will light up to the beat.  The real magic is Camera mode.

You can place the camera either at the top of the screen or below pointed directly at the TV. During set up you’ll actually set the width and height of your screen within the app in real time so that the entire view aspect is captured.

The Nanoleaf 4D will then imitate the colours and on-screen action making your tele actually appear larger than it is.  This gives you that 4D experience.

It’s cool. Way cool. And I found that the lighting using Camera mode was both subtle at times through to bright and always accurate. There’s no delay or lag between what the Nanoleaf 4D camera sees to the illumination of the lightbar.

If you have a large gaming monitor, you could easily add one of these to it, taking your PC gaming beyond the screen.

Nanoleaf smart lights are an excellent addition to any smart home. You can pair them up with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home.

Is the Nanoleaf 4D worth it? Yup it sure is. You don’t know what your missing until you have one of these.
Whatever mode you prefer to use, it adds a whole other dimension to screen time.

Knock, knock no more.

The mystery of who is at the door is solved by Ring with their series of Video Doorbells.

Now having just released the third version, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 is a smart home security device everyone should invest in.

The Video Doorbell 3 does require a fair bit of DIY and you may want to set aside the best part of a day to get this all done.

In the box Ring provide everything you will ever require to get your Video Doorbell up and running – including the screwdriver and even a spirit level.

Two wall mounts are also included, one for flat surfaces and another slanted for corners or similar.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 is wireless via dual-Band 2.4GHz & 5GHz with a wired in option and will integrate in to your smart home network. The battery, included, is a rechargeable and once fully charged should see you right for well over a month, even two before needing a top up. But this does depend on what features you opt to use on the Video Doorbell 3.

One thing I will advise any future Ring Video Doorbell 3 owners is – fully charge the battery before set up. Even the devices manual states that you should do this. Like most blokes I skimmed the manual and got straight in – then had a frustrating time trying to get the Video Doorbell 3 to connect to my home network.

Turned out it was that the battery was not fully charged. Don’t be me. Charge up before install.

The battery itself is encased inside the Video Doorbell 3 unit and to remove or place in you will need to unscrew a locking screw at the base of the device. Keep that in mind when you choose your placement for mounting.

Ring’s Doorbells have an accompanying app for Android and iOS. It’s this app you’ll also need when to begin – as it takes you through the setup and after all is done and working, you configure your Video Doorbell 3‘s options, from Home, Away and Disarmed.

Any of the modes will alert you that someone is pressing the doorbell, while at the same time recording their actions with it’s FHD 1080p camera.

You’ll get an alert on your smartphone whether you’re home or out and about and can live view your doorstep and surrounding area to see who’s there.

You also have the option of talking through the camera to the person on your porch. And the voice is very clear aswell.

Armed and Home does the same thing, but also notifies you when there’s movement around your front door. This can be turned off and if not active will prolong the life of the battery.

I eventually turned it off myself as the sensor on the Video Doorbell 3 has a very wide depth to it. The unit would pick up my neighbours coming and goings, alot of stray cats and even my neighbour’s neighbours.

But if you are security conscious you may want to leave that setting on. It works exceedingly well, day or night (night via Night Vision).

As for the footage that the weather and rain-proof Video Doorbell 3 records, you have pre-roll a less than SD black and white snippet which you can freely access. You have the already mentioned Live View, so at the moment you get an alert you can log in to your device and see who’s there.

But from out of the box, unfortunately, the footage that the Video Doorbell 3 actually records, whether at the moment the doorbell is rung or via movement, you’ll need to pay.

Ring offer a 12 month subscription called Ring Protect, which is admittedly not too costly, but this was a bit disappointing to see, when you have other manufacturers of smart security cameras giving users up to 30 days of captured footage storage to view and download.

You should get 30 days trial of Ring’s subscription service once you have your new Video Doorbell 3, when the review unit came in to our office the 30 Day trial had already expired.

To compliment your Ring Video Doorbell 3 you may also want to opt for the Ring Chime.

We also received one of these from Ring (thanks Ring) and this small but super loud box will wirelessly connect in to your homes Wi-Fi network and buddy up with your Video Doorbell 3 so that when your doorbell is button is pressed you will ultimately hear it loud and clear inside the house.

Simple but effective.

You can also customize your doorbell tone from a library of built-in chimes.

Asides from the subscription service model that Ring are using currently for recorded footage which affects my overall score by a smidgen , I love the Video Doorbell 3. It makes sense to own one of these, or two if your backdoor is accessible via path or driveway.

It keeps an eye on deliveries, keeps your home safe and really does give you peace of mind.

Now that I have a Ring Video Doorbell 3 I wouldn’t go with out one.

In addition, Arlo Ultra comes with the new, advanced Arlo SmartHub which connects to the user’s router to provide extended Wi-Fi range to Arlo cameras, manages data traffic to and from the camera out to the user’s cloud account and offers a more secure dedicated IOT network for the devices connected to the Arlo SmartHub. The Arlo SmartHub features a microSD Card for local storage of recorded clips from Arlo cameras.

To complete the solution, each Arlo Ultra system includes a one-year Arlo Smart Premier subscription, to provide added peace of mind and convenience for Arlo Ultra owners. The subscription service utilises powerful AI and computer vision technology to deliver customised notifications regarding people, animal, vehicle and package detection. Arlo Smart Premier also includes cloud recordings of video clips at 1080p or lower resolution for up to 30 days. Premium video recording for cloud storage of 4K clips is available as an add-on subscription, or users can store 4K clips locally at no added cost using the SmartHub’s microSD card slot.

Sony, the leader in full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses, is increasing its flagship lens line-up to 30, with the introduction of the highly anticipated 24mm F1.4 Prime G Master.

Expertly engineered to deliver best in class performance across all aperture settings, the new FE 24mm F1.4 GM (model SEL24F14GM) utilises Sony’s specialist advanced optical technologies to satisfy the needs of the most demanding photographers. It features a compact and lightweight design with a filter diameter of φ67mm and measures just 75.4mm x 92.4mm, weighing a mere 445g. Meeting the strict standards for G Master status, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM combines the high resolution and beautiful bokeh that are the signature of the G Master series.

Realising consistently high resolution across the entire frame, even at F1.4, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM boasts a new optical design comprising 10 groups with 13 elements featuring two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The incorporation of two XA elements effectively suppresses sagittal flare so that point light sources are accurately reproduced, making the FE 24mm F1.4 GM a compelling proposition for star-scape photographers. Sony’s unique Nano AR Coating is applied to reduce flare and ghosting for impressive clarity, even in landscape shots where the position of the sun is often problematic with a normal lens.

This industry leading performance has been packaged in an extremely compact and lightweight body weighing just 445g. For landscape photographers who often have to walk for long distances to get to the perfect shooting spot, this provides a welcome reduction in the weight that they have carry, an advantage that is further compounded when the FE 24mm F1.4 GM is paired with one of Sony’s award winning α7 / α9 bodies. This lightweight package has been realised in part by the development of a new high power DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) which delivers approximately three times greater thrust than the previous DDSSM, enabling fast response, high positioning accuracy and quiet operation for both stills and movie shooting.

In addition to its landscape and stars-cape shooting abilities, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM also has excellent close up performance of 0.24 metres (0.79ft.) and delivers soft and natural bokeh. As a member of Sony’s flagship G Master series lenses, the new lens features an incredible level of image quality and bokeh. As bokeh quality is directly affected by spherical aberration and axial and lateral chromatic aberration that can also cause colour bleeding, all of these factors are painstakingly controlled at the design and manufacturing stages and each lens is individually tested and adjusted to achieve maximum image quality and bokeh.

Furthermore, the FE 24mm F1.4 GM includes a number of professional controls aiding ease of operation for both stills and movie shooting. An aperture ring allows direct, intuitive aperture control whilst an aperture click switch makes it possible to enable or disable click stops as required. The focus ring features Linear Response MF for fine, responsive manual focus control, giving the user the control immediacy needed for fast, accurate manual focusing. The focus hold button is customisable and a focus mode switch makes it possible to quickly select auto or manual focus to match changing shooting conditions.
