Jumping on the 5G wagon is no longer going to cost you the equivalent of a small nations gross economy with Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9T 5G.

The all-screen 6.5 inch LCD display weighs in at 1080 x 2340 pixels. It’s bright, vibrant and super responsive.

Powering the Redmi Note 9T 5G is a medium level Octa-Core Max crunching the numbers at 2.4GHz. For the multi-taskers or light mobile gamers out there the 4GB RAM (memory) should see you right.

True, compared to higher brands, this is on the low side, but the Redmi Note 9T 5G is not Xiaomi’s flagship device, it is their more affordable solution for 5G networks.

Camera smarts are impressive.

The rear triple camera housing comprises of 48MP main wide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth lenses.

Snapping pics you can opt to use 48MP mode or standard. Xiaomi have also included some fun stuff, especially for Vloggers.

Short burst video or short video with Vlogger templates with visual camera effects. I had a good play with these and can see mobile videographers that just want to point and shoot without a high price tag getting a Redmi Note 9T 5G just for these enhancements.

The Redmi Note 9T 5G will record video at 4K 1080p both 30 and 60fps.

The selfie camera is not to be sniffed at either at 13MP.

Xiaomi have pulled a whopping punch against their market competitors with the Redmi Note 9T 5G for what it can do at it’s pricing tier of being under $400 NZD.

Looking sharp with a coloured textured backing the Redmi Note 9T 5G has one more killer feature – the 5,000 mAh battery with quick charge feature.

Recording video or playing light mobile games for up to an hour hardly puts a dent on the battery at full charge.

For light to moderate use you’re likely to get up to two full days use from full to empty.

The Redmi Note 9T 5G runs Android 10 and Xiaomi have held back from over-doing the reskin of Android or adding bloatware.

Usually I use a flagship high spec’d smartphone on a daily basis. Having been using the Redmi Note 9T 5G for over a week fulltime there I found that the phone runs real smooth, no lag and handles 5G speeds like a pro.

If you’re keen to grasp the future of mobile network with 5G and do not need a super-computer of a smartdevice to get you through your connected life the Redmi Note 9T 5G is the one.

Samsung have recently released the 5G variant of their folding glass flip smartphone – the Galaxy Z Flip.

Without pouring over the specs of the phone all over again, as we did that here the small clamshell smartdevice is one of two foldable devices from the smart-tech company.

To round it up though, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is powered by a Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865+ processor coupled with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

The rear camera lens array in comes in at a total of 24MP (x2 12MP) and the selfie camera at 12MP.

With a slightly bigger than 1 inch multi-display on the rear of the device which doubles as a notification center and rear view-finder for the camera – the Galaxy Z Flip can be folded in to a ‘L’ shape, sat on a flat surface and become the ultimate content creator and vloggers smartphone – as the opened 6.7 inch AMOLED display places the camera view and controls in split screen.

Adding 5G and a new matte colour finish speeds things up online measurably. Not only with general browsing and video calling over social apps – it’s also perfect for online gaming.

Call of Duty Mobile on 5G keeps you running and gunning without the data lag and is able to handle voice chat aswell as fast and ferocious action simultaneously and flawlessly.

Introducing one hell of a super tablet.

Traditionally tablets have been a slightly watered down version of a flagship device, or at best on par with a mid range smartphone.

Bigger but not badder and most definitely not like the top shelf phone from the same manufacturer. Not so with Samsung’s just released Galaxy Tab S7+.

It has all the goods to keep you working, playing and content creating with the benefit of a low bezel 12.4 inch Super AMOLED screen.

The Tab S7+ is a bit like a Note20 or Note20 5G supersized.

The included S Pen magnetically charges on the back of the tablet – this said I think placement could have been a wee bit better – if you are charging the S Pen on the tablet and using the Tab S7+ at the same time on a flat surface the tab will not sit flush.

I can also imagine alot of S Pen’s lost out there in the wild – unlike the Note series the S Pen is an external accessory that does not slot inside of the tablet.

Builtin you’ll have 256GB of storage, 8GB RAM and all is powered by a similar processor as Samsung’s flagships; Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. You can expand the storage with a microSD card (up to 1TB).

For the content creators out there – whether you vlog, stream or are a social media Queen the S Pen comes in handy if you need to do any touch ups or creative work.

Multi-window and multitask like a pro – the larger screen enables you to watch media while replying to emails and checking up on your social feeds, without having to squint to see all of the app windows you have open in one go.

As I suspected the camera’s are not on par with the high end smartphone range – selfie clocks in at 5MP and the rear has dual lens coming in at 13MP.

Still, not too bad and pleased to see tat the camera spec for a tablet is getting a bit higher than it used to be.

Samsung have also released a smart keyboard cover (sold separately).

If you’re a blogger… or run a website having the keyboard is must.

Watching media, streaming Spotify over bluetooth, or tapping out this review (with keyboard cover) on the Galaxy Tab S7+ almost blurs the lines between tablet vs. laptop.

The Book Cover as it’s called is in two parts. The back cover magnetically attaches itself to the rear of the Galaxy Tab S7+ with a cubby for the S Pen.

The keyboard, which is a fully functioning notebook keyboard also attaches magnetically to the Tab S7+ and has a trackpad – basically turning the tablet in to an Android 10 notebook.

The Galaxy Tab S7+ is also killer for gaming.

Serious or casual, connect up your Xbox or PS4 controller via bluetooth and take advantage of the larger crisp and detailed screen.

On-screen controls were a bit tricky though, simply due to the width of the display.

I really need to mention the longevity of the Tab S7+ battery – a whopping Li-Po 10090 mAh which does charge up the S Pen, sure, but also lasts nearly a week with moderate daily use. In the box you’ll get an impressively quick 45 watt USB to USB-C A/C charger. From dead to full usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes.

Pricey, but not as much as the top of the line smartphone and coming in two varieties – WIFI and 5G the Galaxy Tab S7+ is the best Android tablet I have yet to experience.

Super thin, lighter than flagship smartphones it is totally a pick up and go, work, create or play anywhere.

Just when I thought that Samsung had outdone themselves with their last Note device – they go a few steps further.

Last year’s Note10 was a super computer in your pocket – but did fall short on some camera tricks that other smartdevice manufacturers had been placing in to their flagships for months.

Taking the ‘Ultra’ moniker to match their flagship S20’s, with the Note20 Ultra 5G Samsung have given us exactly what we want – and then some.

The mammoth sized 6.9 inch ‘phablet’ boasts a QHD AMOLED rounded (or edge) screen with an almost zero bezel top and bottom.

Absolutely built for 4K or 8K media and mobile gaming with a refresh rate of 120Hz. You can wind it back to 60Hz however my preference even for everyday use is to have the 120 on – it gives you a much sharper and smoother user experience and it saves going in to Display settings to change it out if you’re about to watch something on Netflix or get in some game time.

The front lens comes in at 10MP – the same pixel count as we have seen on their last couple of flagships. However the Selfie camera, a laser cut at the top of the screen, records at 60fps in 4K.

Making this the most original and unique Note in the entire history of the devices the Note20 Ultra 5G has a large rectangular triple lens housing for the rear cameras.

Inside this array there’s the main camera at a whopping 108MP, a 12MP hybrid zoom lens (upto 50x) with periscope telephoto function and finally a 12MP ultrawide. Also within the same housing you’ll find a laser sensor for optimal focusing – and that takes me to the camera modes and smarts on offer.

One of the sore points of Samsung smartphones was night shots. Going back as far as the S10+ the Night mode featured but just didn’t work.

This has totally been sorted – in pitch darkness you’ll get a well lit shot as we had hoped for.

Live Focus and Live Focus Video are retained from prior models and a fav of mine allowing a specified bokeh effect – perfect if you’re wanting to create something a little more professional looking.

Old favourites are still on the menu; Hyperlapse, Pano, Slow Mo and it’s Super variant, Pro and more.

Live Video has been tweaked. Samsung have added a very cool zoom feature where you can manually slow zoom for that drawn out dramatization or real fast zoom in for that sudden moment of realization with customizable bi-lateral audio settings. Essentially drown out background noise as best as possible and focus on the subject if they are speaking – or vice versa. Very cool.

Single take mode we were introduced to in the Galaxy S20. Also within the Note20 Ultra 5G you can tweak the length of the varied bursts and videos it takes within one click of the shutter.

Then there’s Bixby Vision. Yep Bixby is still there, like it or not – but thankfully the dedicated Bixby button has been removed. A button on the handset that I would always bump at the worst moments.

Honestly – the Note20 Ultra 5G’s cameras are the absolute best and feature rich on any smartphone as of writing. And most of these have filtered down and been included in the sub variants of the Note20, but more on those later.

My only concern is the sizeable housing that does stick out from the flush and smooth matte rear casing. You will absolutely need to use a high quality phone case with the Note20.

Samsung have wound back on their massive storage that only a couple of years ago we had (remember the S10+ 1TB?).

The Galaxy S20 series was disappointingly low at only 128GB.

Now we do not have a 512GB Note20 but we are presented with a modest 256GB. As with prior devices that storage is expandable via microSD (upto 1TB). If you shoot alot of video in 8K then likely you will need to add extra storage.

Couple in 12GB RAM and the hyper fast 64-bit Octa-Core Processor crunching data @ 3.0GHz with a maximum of 3.8GHz.

Play hours of heavy resource games without heating up the handset or draining battery. PUBG and Fortnite at 120Hz refresh – all played superbly. (See our Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G gameplay here).

Call of Duty Mobile, one that can be a bit of a power chomper hardly shaved anything off the massive 4500MAh internal battery (Note20 comes with a 4300MAh).

Samsung tout the Note20 Ultra 5G as having an ‘all day battery’. It always depends on your usage of your smartphone as to how your battery will last, of course.

My phone is always buzzing with emails, calls and more day and night. I receive heavy media files, super large graphics and so on – viewing these on an almost hourly basis on the go can shave a bit of my daily use.

Factor in my every day use with aiming to push a device to it’s limits and playing a few hours of mobile games, Netflix and Spotify streaming I would have thought that an ‘all day battery’ would have lasted half a day minimum.

No. The Note20 Ultra 5G is more than capable of keeping up with me and my busy shenanigans while having enough juice to power through the following day aswell.

The most that i managed to squeeze out of the handset was around two and a half days from full charge to 5%.

The Note20 Ultra 5G comes with a 25 watt charge in the box and the phone has quick charge 2.0 smarts builtin. From flat to around half using the supplied the charger takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

For fans of the Note smartphones there have been two drawcards. Screen size (the Note series have always been of the larger variety) and the included stylus called the S Pen.

As the series has evolved over the years so has the S Pen. The Note10 bought us Air Gesture, where you could wave your S Pen in the air near your phone like a crazed magician in order to perform certain functions.

I remember testing this out last year and while I was well impressed and could see where this would evolve I did have moments where maybe I moved too fast or too slow and the Note10 didn’t quite know what I was doing.

This has been resolved. Once you set air gesture to go by a clicking the side button on the S Pen in front of your Note20 differing commands execute various functions. Take a screenshot, control a presentation, take a selfie and no matter what realistic speed I waived around the Note20 Ultra 5G was on point.

The S Pen is not an accessory – if it was Samsung would likely sell it separately. It is an integral part of the Note devices and still is with the Note20 series.

Finer tuned and resembling more of a pen tip the intricate point of the S Pen has virtually zero lag when writing or drawing on screen (infact it is tested at 7 milliseconds).

The bevvy of S Pen options and functions cascade out when you remove from the phone’s casing.

I always find the on-screen writer to be super handy for a quick reminder, shopping list (when you get to the Supermarket and forgot the one you wrote previously) and using the S Pen to tweak photo’s and the more serious nature of taking notes (hence the device name) at media events and talent interviews.

The phone and the stylus go hand in hand. The S Pen is what makes the Note unique and the S Pen needs the smarts and large screen of the phone.

Samsung have opted for a wider range of the Note20 series – differing models and colours to suit all.

The smaller Note20 and Note20 5G come in at 6.7 inches and a slightly lesser spec – and the Ultra and Ultra 5G are the big boys for the more serious Noters.

For those that are still on the fence about 5G then there are 4G variants (those without the 5G in their naming).

Samsung has created the ‘Ultra’ smartphone, built upon Android 10 and provides a seamless integration between your smartdevice and PC with the builtin DEX.

For play, for work the Samsung Note20 Ultra 5G is the super king of all Android smartphones.

Having the smarts doesn’t mean it’s expensive.

HMD Global, home of Nokia phones has recently released the mid range Android 10 smartphone, the sizeable and lightning fast Nokia 2.3.

The dual SIM no bloatware, pure Android (Android One) smartphone comes in at just a bit over $200 but has some of the goodness the $2K+ flagships do.

First up the 6.2 inch screen comes in at 720 x 1520 or as Nokia say it, HD+. The real estate of the screen though is chomped by a heavy bezel, especially at the bottom and has a notch for the 5MP selfie camera.

For media streaming and video calling and playing some light-weight apps it’s ample for anyone.

Storage is good too for the price at 32GB. However the achilles heel of the Nokia 2.3 is the low RAM. 2GB.

This minimizes and fences off alot of popular gaming apps that, say a student who might purchase one of these due to its low cost, will not be able to install or play.

Still if it’s the camera you’re after the Nokia 2.3 has the goods.

The dual lens rear array is 13MP featuring a pleasing set of snapping options, Panorama, Time Lapse, Portrait and of course the A.I. built Google lens. Video records at FHD – 1080p.

Being a fully Android based phone you also have the feature of Google Assistant and as we have seen with the other Nokia devices this has a dedicated button to the left.

But that’s not all – the Nokia 2.3 has one more trick up it’s sleeve. A 2 day battery.

The beefy 4000 mAh battery is optimised by the fact that Nokia do not overlay any nonsense over the Android operating system or any apps that you really don’t need or ever wanted.

Aswell as the processor being a modest Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 designed specifically for lighter resource consumption over moderate processing power.

Myself using the Nokia 2.3 for a couple of weeks found that I was able to squeeze upto 4 days from the smartphone before it fully died on a single full charge.

This included me taking calls, using social media apps and alot of Spotify’ing.

A small but mighty beast – the Nokia 2.3 may not be the flashest kid on the block, it also might not be able to game like the pro’s but it still has the goods if you’re looking for a cost effective Android smartphone that’s going to see you right for days on end.

There’s not a lot you can get in the way of a smartdevice for under $200.

Until now that is.

Nokia are making Android phones for the masses, covering every price point.

STG received their newest low range handset, the Nokia 1.3 to review and although it is a cheapie, it doesn’t cut too many corners.

First surprise for me is that it runs on Android 10, Google’s latest OS. And runs well I’ll add.

Boasting a 5MP front notch camera and 8MP rear the camera modes, as you would expect are simple.

Portrait, Photo and Video (HD). There is also a Google text translate built-in. Zoom comes in at x8.

The images that are produced are that of a mid-range device and bearing in mind the user market that the Nokia 1.3 is tailored for (Mums, Dads, Grandparents, first time smartphone users) the snaps are of a higher enough quality.

Internal storage and system memory is low.

The Nokia 1.3 has 16GB storage, the Android system taking a vast chunk of that leaves you with around 10GB free. 1GB RAM (memory) ensures that all functions of the smartphone work well without any lag – this includes the camera which is super smooth to use. Although being just the 1GB means that this is definitely not the phone to use if you are a multi-tasker.

Small, the 5.7 inch LCD screen is bright and bold but does have a chunky bezel.

Powered by a Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 the main function of this power would be to operate the camera – but given that this is a low range unit, the processor speed is higher than I thought it would be.

Battery surprised me though.

Inside the matte casing of the Nokia 1.3 is a 3,000 mAh quick charge battery. Being the lower spec and also that the handset is pure Google without bloatware or a heavily overlaid proprietary operating system the life span of the Nokia 1.3 comes second to none in low range smartphones.

Expect two to three days use without the need of a charge up (from full charge) for usual every day use.

When the battery does eventually die, around 30 to 40 minutes will see you up and running again at full steam.

The Nokia 1.3 features a dedicated Google Assistant tactile button to the left of the device, volume and power buttons to the right.

A 3.5mm headset socket is at the top.

In a way the Nokia 1.3 reminded me of the earlier days of Android phones. When we were amazed that the operating memory (RAM) made it in to the the Gig-a-sphere. When 16GB digital storage seemed like a lot.

Nowadays we are just spoiled.

The Nokia 1.3 is the device to get if you’re adopting a smartphone for the first time, or for those that like or need to have a phone but aren’t fussed with all of the extra fancy bits. It’s also an excellent device to take travelling. Small, doesn’t cost a lot and does what it says on the box and fairly rugged, but is not dust or waterproof.

With the Nokia 1.3, Nokia have placed the potential for anyone to wield a smartphone no matter the age or experience. It’s got the smarts without the cost.

Nokia Kevlar 007 Case
